Title: Leona Lewis - Echo

KOS - April 5, 2009 06:54 AM (GMT)
Leona 2nd album news

This all sounds quite false to me, but I'll post it anyway, from The Mirror....:

Leona Lewis will reportedly enter recording booth alongside powerhouse producer/rapper Timbaland for her upcoming sophomore set. "Timbaland can't wait to work with Leona and make her feisty like Beyonce [Knowles] and Rihanna," a source says as quoted by The Mirror.

Other big names rumored to be lined up to help Leona in the new album are Jay-Z and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. No official statement has been given regarding the news though.

Previously, Justin Timberlake has been confirmed to produce one of Leona Lewis' new singles called "Don't Let Me Down". He visited Chalice Recording Studios when the winner of 2006 "The X Factor" recorded the new track back in March.

Details on what fans can expect from the new album are still unclear. But, a spokesperson for Leona promises that the record will still have the singer's trademark ballad tunes in addition to danceable sounds. "The ballads will still be there but the tracks will be racier and there'll be dancefloor anthems too," the spokesperson says. "It's early stages but we're all very excited."

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

LEONA Lewis is turning to the brains behind Girls Aloud's genius pop songs for her second album.

Music Week's Producer Of The Year recipients Xenomania penned five tracks for the follow-up to the Hackney gal's multi-million selling Spirit.

Songwriter Miranda Cooper told me: "We are not going to change Leona's style but it's interesting for us to do something downbeat; tragic songs with a twist."

Miranda and Xenomania other half Brian Higgins also won Music Sync Of The Year for Gabriella Cilmi's Sweet About Me.

Leona Lewis's second album is planned for a worldwide release in November 2009. Production is said to have begun in February 2009, including work with other (rumoured) producers/songwriters such as Ryan Tedder, Ne-Yo, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, will.i.am and Jay-Z.

So boring. The standard run of the mill producers like always.

Coked Up Baby Boy - April 5, 2009 07:49 AM (GMT)
I'm SO anticipating this!

NOT.

And OMG she's SO interesting using Timbo and Timbertwat, talk about stretching herself out! wow.

Naaman - April 5, 2009 10:26 AM (GMT)
Well I for one CAN'T WAIT! Come on loves, a new Leona album means at least 12 more opportunities to hear her sing and be bowled over by her beautiful voice!

I think this is true, well partly at least anyway, because there was a picture of her in the studio with Justin that leaked a couple of months ago:

Justin is so gay

Naaman - April 5, 2009 06:00 PM (GMT)
Doesn't anybody else here think Leona has one of the best voices they've heard...like EVER?! Seriously, I can't think of anyone else that sings so beautifully, she is just mesmerising and the heart and emotion she puts into her delivery is stunning.

This performance in particular leaves me speechless!

She is truly amazing, I love her so much.

KOS - April 5, 2009 06:43 PM (GMT)
while she undoubtedly has amazing vocals, I find her vocal delivery quite bland and souless to be honest..

Sick Piger - April 5, 2009 08:41 PM (GMT)
I think she has a great voice. However, her singing style is totally bland. She really doesn't have her own style and borrows heavily from past singers which is annoying. The vid posted above sounds EXACTLY the way Celine Dion sang it back in '99.

She is not very creative but I do give her credit for having a great voice and singing her songs well. She should stick to ballads though cause her uptempo/urban styled songs are very try hard.

Nooooo, how can you say that?!? How can you NOT see how much heart and soul drips from every words she sings. Just look at Run - compare it to the original and you can just see how much more heart wrenching she made it, obviously her vocals were technically flawless, but the real winning aspect of it was her delivery of the words.

Alexz - April 5, 2009 10:04 PM (GMT)
She's not an spectacular singer but she's better than Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé.

Emma - April 5, 2009 10:47 PM (GMT)
I just cannot WARM to this woman.

THAT BEING SAID. I love some tracks on her album.

I, for one, agree with you TOTALLY, Naaman! I don't know what Leona does or how she does it, but her voice has an indefinable quality. Every time I hear her I'm moved. She doesn't force her vocals, or scream and shriek, she doesn't have a hard edge to her voice, and she doesn't rely on knocking you senseless with her mega-decibels. Her voice just seems to flow out, with all the emotion required to make the most of a song, and there's a sense of calm and space in her timing that very few singers possess. Her technique and delivery are totally different from Celine's.

And to put what I'm saying in context, I usually HATE big-belting-ballad singers. They leave me completely cold. Leona is the exception.

She took such a deep, well respected, emotional track and turned it into a run of the mill bland cover version!!

Oh COME ON!! Her version struck a chord with people and you know it! That's why it went from just being a one-off cover version for Radio 1's Live Lounge to being professionally recorded and released as a single, because everyone was raving about it so much! And then she delivered that completely KILLER performance on X Factor and showed exactly why her version was met with such acclaim.

Youngster - April 6, 2009 10:36 AM (GMT)
Leona's voice is like an instrument. It blends so well with the music.

And her live lounge version of Run is one of the best live performances I've EVER heard...Flawless.

Her Bleeding Love and Run performances on X-factor were both

This performance is 10 years old and it made that song really popular again. It was the first time I had heard it and when I looked it up it was made it the 70's by Roberta Flack:

Celine made this song her own and gave it a new dimension. I doubt Leona would have sung this song if it weren't for Celine's remake. It sounds almost identical to the way Celine sang it; very typical copycat of her. Leona is like Simon's Barbie doll and he fashions her after previous divas. Then he makes her out to be the best thing since sliced bread. But so far she's proved to be a karaoke star.

Karen - April 6, 2009 06:49 PM (GMT)
Piggy...... I normally respect your opinions, but you do talk a lot of b******s on occasions. And this is one of those occasions. Or are you just trying to be provocative?

There's nothing "typical copycat" OR "barbie" about Leona. If you can't hear the difference between Celine and Leona, I can only conclude that too much listening to Aguilera has damaged both your hearing and your critical faculties.

Sick Piger - April 6, 2009 06:52 PM (GMT)
Its okay to like an artist but its another thing to make excuses for them just because you might like them.

Naaman - April 6, 2009 07:08 PM (GMT)
Thanks for posting the videos Sick. Obviously there's nothing negative about Celine's version at all, as she is a fantastic singer, but there's something about Leona's, it just sounds...warmer, more beautiful. I prefer it to Celine's but it's just a matter of opinion really.

As well as Celine's cover, the song also came to my attention through George Michael's rendition of it for his covers album some years ago.

It's amazing that a young girl from east London can take on these established superstars who are only covering this song once they are well into their careers. For that alone Leona deserves alot of credit.

Sick Piger - April 6, 2009 07:19 PM (GMT)
George's is nice too.

Leona still has a lot to learn. But she's got the stuff. Maybe one day she won't need the training wheels.

Naaman - April 6, 2009 08:50 PM (GMT)
This new album NEEDS to be amazing. I loved Spirit alot but I do think alot of its material was beneath her and her capabilities. It's really interesting because I want to see more from her as an artist but I don't really know exactly what type of music I would ideally like her to do.

I think more tracks in the style of Bleeding Love and Run is obviously the best option, but it's weird...they don't really belong to a certain genre do they? They're just great songs full stop.

I *WISH* she had been given Halo! Obviously I ADORE what Beyonce did to it but I really feel like we missed out by not being able to hear Leona's version. Every time I play it I can just imagine how well she would have done with it. And I think it was perfect first single material for her second album, something the public would have been more than satisfied for her to come back with.

I Am... Michael Fierce - April 6, 2009 08:59 PM (GMT)
You do wonder what else she has to give when she can let 'Halo' go. I'd have loved to hear her do 'Halo' though!

Karen - April 6, 2009 10:32 PM (GMT)
I really HOPE her new album won't be a load of mid-tempo generic r&b stuff. I really believe ballads and other emotional songs are Leona's territory.

And yeah, I'd LOVE to hear her do "Halo" too. I think that's my song of the moment.

Youngster - April 8, 2009 11:19 PM (GMT)
I don't know why but Rosie's first comment when Bleeding Love leaked has stuck in my head for about two years...

"It's good, but not good enough."

Naaman - April 9, 2009 10:11 PM (GMT)
Lol! It was more than good enough though, surely we can all agree on that now!

There was a documentary on BBC1 last night about "Queens of British Pop", the most influential females in British music history or something. Amongst them was GERI HALLIWELL.

BUT I DIGRESS.

Leona was in it too, here is her segment:

[doHTML]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kxolkZGXMAY&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kxolkZGXMAY&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/doHTML]

Naaman - April 9, 2009 10:14 PM (GMT)
I love that Leona was included in this and that they were so positive about her but right now I'm just having a panic attack about the fact that LULU of all people just read my mind and said everything I think about Leona Lewis out loud on national television.

Karen - April 9, 2009 10:19 PM (GMT)
When I saw Geri Halliwell's name on the list I decided not to bother watching. Credibility enters a kind of zero-gravity situation. She wasn't even considered a good singer in the Spice Girls and her career just vanished when people started thinking "OK Geri, joke over."

But Leona

Her voice just MELTS me. It really is magical. Right now she is one of the world's very best female singers. She doesn't need any of Piggy's condescending "training wheels" crap.

Naaman - April 9, 2009 10:25 PM (GMT)
To be fair it was about the Girl Power movement in the '90's and its influence, and Geri was a major part of that. And that Union Jack dress was an iconic moment in pop history no matter what anyone says!

Karen - April 9, 2009 10:29 PM (GMT)
It would have been fairer to include all of the Spice Girls as a collective, since they all had their own distinctive images and all played their own particular parts.

They all had their own parts to play and appealed to different people which gave them as big a fanbase as they had, but you can tell that Geri pretty much WAS the Spice Girls and everything they embodied. They benefited alot from her creativity and originality aswell, and I don't think their image or impact would have been anywhere near as strong without her.

Naaman - April 9, 2009 10:35 PM (GMT)
Back to Leona, this is the moment I first fell in love with her. And it's just as impressive three years later:

[doHTML]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FCOn4Gmj4T0&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FCOn4Gmj4T0&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/doHTML]

SIMPLY STUNNING!

I have this MP3 on my iPod and it's always a treat to listen to!

Karen - April 9, 2009 10:45 PM (GMT)
Yeah, but Geri Halliwell.... come ON! At least the others on the list are talented artists!

But anyway! Yeah, that is my favorite performance of "Summertime" EVER, and that's a song that's been almost as over-used as "Unchained Melody".

Naaman - April 9, 2009 11:14 PM (GMT)
I can't pretend I'm still not FLABBERGASTED that she was on a list with singers like Annie Lennox, Leona Lewis and Amy Winehouse, but good for her really! Even on the show itself, people like Adele and Alexandra Burke were fawning over her and talking about just how much they adored her and the Spice Girls and how they were so heartbroken when Geri left the group. She helped make a huge impact in these aspiring singers' lives, that's the crux of it!

I'm now going to have a Leona performances marathon on YouTube.

Karen - April 9, 2009 11:20 PM (GMT)
Yeah, you need some quality singing to exorcise all remaining memories of Geri!
