What's your friends screen resolution, and what parts does he plan on salvaging?

Still, if you are asking about screen resolution in order to determine a video card to get, that makes it sound like you are going to put in some card powered by gerbils. Most cards, even POS's at $25 should be able to handle resolutions of at least 2048 x 1536.
For $1000 bucks, I would expect that you have room in the budget to get a $150-$200 vid card and run just about anything out there.
