Title: Non-Animal Patronuses?

Professor Rogue - March 17, 2005 09:33 PM (GMT)
I was just wondering if a patronus can only take an animal form. We know Harry's patronus is a stag, Hermione's is an otter and Cho's is a swan. But then we could also say, Harry's patronus is his father.

There is also this instance where Lupin produces a patronus but we do not learn the exact form only that is was some silvery light. There was another grown-up character (was it Dumbledore?) who also once produced a patronus and we didn't get to know which form it took.

So, the question is: are there only patronusses in the forms of animals or are there non-animal patronusses? And if there are other forms, what would they be?

flounder21 - March 17, 2005 09:45 PM (GMT)
:wizard: u do have a point there but i think that maybe only really powerful wizards could do non animal patronuses. i also think ur patronus has a lot to do wth ur own personality. :wizard:

Luna - March 18, 2005 12:55 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, you've got a point there...
maybe a patronus takes the form of wat u miss most. Or wat's dearest to your heart! Like, Cho may have a memory of a swan. Or maybe someone dear to her, like Cedric, used to call her that. Don't you think that's possible?

Coldfire - March 18, 2005 01:16 AM (GMT)
Yeah that could be true Luna. But I don't know why Hermione's would be an otter then. . . But maybe they could be things like knives or pencils or something like that. ..

Luna - March 18, 2005 01:23 AM (GMT)
Dunno, that's why i didn't use her as an example! :P
Maybe she led an otter protection program or something!

BarbieGirl - March 18, 2005 02:17 AM (GMT)
Intereseting......I've never actually thought about it!! But I think that all people's patronuses are animals, most of the patronuses described are animals and I just have a feeling.

SiRiUsLyAdDiCtEd - March 18, 2005 05:47 AM (GMT)
i'm with Asha on that one. it's kinda hard for me to imagine a pencil chasing a dementor away :P . and i also have this feeling it's just animals.....not sure why, probably cause that's all we've seen. i know, not the greatest reason. but i just have this feeling. :)

Lianslo - March 18, 2005 05:59 AM (GMT)
I agree with both Ash and Binks. I can't think of anything except animals that would make sense for chasing away dementors. I also have this crazy "feeling" they keep referring too...I don't know, it just makes sense in my mind.

Luna - March 18, 2005 08:55 PM (GMT)
Well, i dunno! Maybe it has to be a living thing! lol, a pencil would be funny! I guess it has to be an animal, but there's something about those animals. I mean, it can't just be a random creature, right?

BarbieGirl - March 18, 2005 08:58 PM (GMT)
I think magical beings (as in witches and wizards) have strong connection with animals, I mean they can turn into animals, they're patronuses are animals. Maybe thats why these things take an animal form.

Sol-b87 - March 19, 2005 01:01 AM (GMT)
Patronous are best and easily exorcised when they are animals. Because it bests fits the character of the wizard so there is a connection with the wizard and the spell making it more powerful then the rest. However it is a very rare and powerful skill to have your patronous an "object". There are tales of patrounouses being weaons. But there just tales.

flounder21 - March 24, 2005 01:33 AM (GMT)
wow that was really smart. althi u do have a point i think the patronus does have to do with the wizards personality. as i saw earlier that hermione's was an otter maybe it was becuz she is very clever but at the same time a lot of fun!

Coldfire - March 25, 2005 10:23 PM (GMT)
Maybe you're right flounder!! :) But yeah, it would not be as easy to have an object patronus. I mean animals, they move and can, I dunno, stampede or run towards something; it makes them so much more realistic. . . But an object doesn't move. A sword would be a cool patronus though. . .

BarbieGirl - March 26, 2005 06:06 AM (GMT)
LoL- I can imagine that Amber! It would be kinda kewl.

Luna - March 26, 2005 05:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah That would be cool!
kill all the dementors, but i still think it gas something to do with wat's closest to the eprson or something

mwiley - March 26, 2005 07:59 PM (GMT)
You do have a very good point there, but i think they are all animals.

BarbieGirl - March 26, 2005 08:26 PM (GMT)
Yes I definatly think they are all animals to, but just imagine if it was a sword or a gun or something. WOw- LoL.

Coldfire - March 27, 2005 03:35 AM (GMT)
A sword would just be the coolest thing!! I would want mine to be a sword, or a bow and arrow!

FISH - March 27, 2005 01:09 PM (GMT)
fast recap ne one im to lazy to read through all those posts...

Luna - March 27, 2005 05:42 PM (GMT)
well, i get to summarize! yay! umm, we weere just thinking that maybe patronuses don't have to be animals, like maybe they can be swords or something like that. I think it could be something lke the closest thing to the wizard 'heart' or i dunno. Wat do u think?

i don't think that inanimate forms of patronuses need to be limited to being swords tho. I mean: if a sword, why not a pencil?!

BarbieGirl - March 27, 2005 09:56 PM (GMT)
LoL- I cant see a pencil doing the job, but you do you have a point. If patronuses really can turn into other objects (but I dont think they can,) it will probably be possible for them to turn into all types of things! :wizard: :D

mwiley - June 25, 2005 07:14 PM (GMT)
Well, since your supposed to think of a happy memorie while your producing patronus, i'd think that the form your patronus took would have to do with a happy memory..but hermione and an otter?..and harry and a stag? That just doesn't make sence to me. Or maybe it could be like a memorie from the future, that hasn't happened yet. I dunno, would that make sence? But also I think it would make more sence if they could turn into objects too.

whiteflame - July 4, 2005 02:55 AM (GMT)
well this may just be me. but why would it not be an animal? i mean, most animals move, and thats what patronuses are supposed to do right? attack the dementors? well i cant see a flower doing that.

Kitty - July 10, 2005 07:18 PM (GMT)
If my patronus wasn't an animal it would probably be a rock cause I'm soooooo bored!

mwiley - July 16, 2005 04:19 AM (GMT)
lol, nice kitty. If your patronus was an animal though, i bet i'd know what it would be! The name "kitty" clarifies it! I think i'd want mine to be a snowy owl..i love snowy owls, they're sooooo cool!!

Kitty - July 19, 2005 07:47 PM (GMT)
Have you noticed they're complete opposists? Rock- Boring, Kitty- Funny!

:P :D :P :D :P :D :P :D :P :D :P :D
