Title: Exploring L-space
Description: Let's get metaphysical!
pyrii - October 25, 2007 04:35 AM (GMT)
Even big collections of ordinary books distort space and time, as can readily be proved by anyone who has been around a really old-fashioned second-hand bookshop, one of those that has more staircases than storeys and those rows of shelves that end in little doors that are surely too small for a full sized human to enter.
The relevant equation is Knowledge = Power = Energy = Matter = Mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read. Mass distorts space into polyfractal L-space, in which Everywhere is also Everywhere Else.
All libraries are connected in L-space by the bookwormholes created by the strong space-time distortions found in any large collection of books. Only a very few librarians learn the secret, and there are inflexible rules about making use of the fact - because it amounts to time travel.
The three rules of the Librarians of Time and Space are: (1) Silence; (2) Books must be returned no later than the last date shown, and (3) the nature of causality must not be interfered with.
-quoted from The Discworld Companion, based off the ideas of Terry Pratchett
Basically, I have decided to venture into the darkest depths of the Hogwarts Library to explore the uncharted mass of books. Things we may run across may include lost tribes of research students, wild thesauri, and the possibility of a black hole. I leave these and others open as possibilities

Erin walked into the library with a large backpack on her back, a wide brimmed adventurer's hat on her head, and a medium weight jacket tied around her waist. Wearing loose fitting comfortable jeans, she had her wand in one hand, and a large carved walking stick in the other.
"Okay... flashlight... check.
Sleeping bag...check.
Wand...check.
Food supplies... check..."
Erin said, continuing her list of supplies, as she walked towards a table in the middle of the library, where hopefully someone was there to meet her.

Remy: Slytherin's Official Future
Remy was up and bored but not hungry this time was strange. He decided he wanted to color in a coloring book so he took of towards the library. Once inside he waved a polite wave at the librarian and then began walking to where the coloring books were located hoping no one had taken his favorite one. He smirked as he saw his house mate erin nearby and walked over to her. "Hi whatcha doing" he asked curiously.
Ankaa - October 26, 2007 06:48 PM (GMT)
Ankaa wandered into the library. She had no idea what book she wanted, but she knew if she spent enough time wandering around the infinite shelves, something would jump out at her, possibly quite literally.
She'd bought her backpack with her, she always carried it in case she ever needed any emergency items like a hair band or a big cloak to hid things under. She'd also bought a bunch of bananas for the librarian - he was sometimes a bit irritable and she didn't want to unduly upset him.
As she stood looking around her, trying to decided which shelf to start with, she saw Remy and one of her fellow Slytherin's that she didn't know also hanging around so she decided to say hi.
"Hey Remy, this isn't your usual haunt, are you lost?" She introduced herself to the other girl "Hey, I'm Ankaa, fellow Slytherin, how are you doing?"
Mark_EmmaWatsonFan - October 26, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
Mark had been up in the library studying up on various potion book that he could base future lessons on when he heard some noise coming from the middle of the rrom afew shelves away. He carefully bookmarked his current read before placing back in its correct place on the shelf, then without a second though headed off in the direction of the noise.
He turned a corner and saw three of his friends: Remy, Erin and Ankaa. "Hey guys" he called out as he approached. "hope im not intruding a secret Slytherin meeting or anything?" he asked, half joking, half geniune wonder.
pyrii - October 26, 2007 09:39 PM (GMT)
"Hey people... nice ta meetcha Ankaa. No Slytherin meeting Mark... at least I didn't think so.. I was just getting ready to explore a little known phenomena of the library."
Erin said, as she finished her checking of all the supplies in her pack. She put a large coil of rope into her backpack, and closed it up. She smiled at the assembled company of people, and winked.
"I hear that if you wander in the restricted section of the library for awhile, you can end up in L-space."

Ankaa - October 28, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
"Wow really? I though L-space was just a myth, I didn't realise it really existed. So how long do you think we have to wait until we find it?"
Ankaa gazed round the familiar library with awe, she'd never thought about the Hogwarts Library being such a place, she thought that was for much older libraries, and after all, Hogwarts was only a few centuries.
She turned back to the small group with growing excitement
"Do you know what this means? We could get anywhere, at any time, just from being in this library!"
REMY-SALINAS - October 29, 2007 04:36 AM (GMT)
Remy:Slytherine's Official Future
Remy had no idea what L space was but after being sucked into alternate dimensions, alien worlds, past histories, future scenarios and more quirkiness than was possible he knew anything in this castle was indeed possible and was one of hte reasons he disliked books so much as most of hte time it was one of the aforementioned things that caused him so much grief but he was still a very curious person "So this L space how does it look?" he asked the others.
pyrii - October 29, 2007 05:15 AM (GMT)
"Sometimes it looks like a normal library, when you start to fall into one plane of existence, other times it looks like a MC Escher painting... and you can walk up a set of stairs to look at books on the ceiling."
Erin said, and slung her backpack on. She looked at the group, and wondered if anyone in it would be joining her on her expidition today.

Remy: Slytherin's Official Future
Remy noticed the stuff erin had with her and he grinned "it looks like your in search of someting mind if i join you? he asked her as he put his hands inside his pockets. He had come looking for a coloring book but this L space sounded a lot cooler than coloring he thought to himself. He looked at mark and ankaa and wondered if they would come as well.
Mark_EmmaWatsonFan - October 29, 2007 12:06 PM (GMT)
Mark had never really heard of this strange phanomanon, but was eager to join the adventure is it was indeed true. The looked at the three Slytherinfs in the library with him with a smile. "I'd love to come along too, if you guys dont mind a brave Gryffindor syealing all your limelight?" he joked with a laugh. He then noticed the bag which Erin had with her. "Errr, we all seem slightly less prepared than you though Erin. Is that gonna be a problem?"
pyrii - October 30, 2007 02:50 AM (GMT)
"I brought enough for for just me for two weeks... should be enough for us all to be good for a few days..."
Erin said coolly, and motioned towards her magical bag that was tied to her waist on a belt. She had a good deal of other supplies that none of the others had, but hopefully she wouldn't have to use the great majority of it. But it was better to be prepared... just in case.
"I was planning on having company, just not quite this much. I guess we won't have quite as long a expedition I suppose. One thing I DO recommend is having some sort of a jacket. If we cross into another library, no telling where it might be. The guy I heard about the L-space phenomena swears blind he was in the ruins of the library of Alexandria, right after its burning at one point. Not sure if I believe him though..."

Remy smiled as he whistled and a few minutes later a snowy white owl came flying with a package. He gave the owl a treat and watched it fly away. "ok im ready" he grinned as he started looking around for anything weird or actually weirder than normall as this L space was sounding like it was going to be a really fun place to explaore.
Ankaa - November 1, 2007 09:27 AM (GMT)
Ankaa grinned excitedly - her two favourite things in one go - books and adventure!
She signalled to the bag on her bag and said
"I'm always ready, so let's go! Are we looking for anything in particular, or just letting it come to us?"
She suddenly flicked the bag off her back and rummaged round it. After a few seconds she pulled out a book
"I'd better just hand this back in, you never know when we'll be back and I don't want to have to cough up for years of late fees!"
Purr - November 8, 2007 05:18 AM (GMT)
Alex was studying in the library on the other side of a set of bookshelves. Erin, being extraordinarily loud, as per usual, was talking about L-space it seemed. Getting up, Alex walked over to where the group was talking.
"You do know that you all COULD get lost in L-space... it happens to people all the time. And what happens if you end up in a underwater library? You could all drown."
He said, giving a warning to the group, as it seemed that Remy and Mark had no idea what they were getting themselves into.

Remy looked as alex walked up explaining molre stuff about this L-space. He nudged mark and with a grin on his face said "did you hear that mark? we could wind up underwater if we get lucky". He looked to pyrii and wondered how hard this L-space would be to find.
pyrii - November 8, 2007 08:19 AM (GMT)
"Well now that we are all quite ready... I think we can go about exploring the library. Thing is, to avoid the librarian Madam Pince. But with a little luck, my planning will have taken care of that already, as she is supposed to be re-indexing the books in the History section today... so lets just go over here!"
Erin said, grinning evilly, as she walked towards the Restricted section of the library. She walked on in, unobstructed, and paused for a moment, waiting for her newfound companions to follow, lest they get split up.

Ankaa - November 11, 2007 06:50 PM (GMT)
Ankaa got back from leaving her books at the in-desk to see Erin making for the restricted section. She gathered up her backpack and cloak and rushed after her, shouting back
"Come on guys, you really don't want to miss this."
She double-looked as she saw a new boy hanging around with them
"Oh hi there, I don't think we've met before, I'm Ankaa. Are you joining us too?"
Twilight - November 12, 2007 05:30 PM (GMT)
Twi had come to the library to study, but she saw a group of students talking together, and she decided to see what they were up to.
She walked over to the group. "Hi, folks!' she said, looking at their backpacks and things. "It looks like you're planning a trip. Going somewhere interesting?"
pyrii - November 13, 2007 12:32 AM (GMT)
Erin stopped just in time to hear Twilight come up behind the group. She thought she had seen the bending of perspective that signified entering L-space junctions when she stopped.
"Oh hey Twi, we were just about to go on a short expedition into L-spa- OH CRAP!"
Erin Grabbed Twilight, and pulled her around a bookshelf so that Madame Pince, who had recently returned from indexing the books in the other side of the library, wouldn't see them sneaking into the Restricted Section of the library. She motioned with her finger for everyone to be quiet, and to follow her further into the forbidden book area.
"The librarian almost saw us... Twi, we are going to explore in the L-space, the library dimensions... if we can find a L-space junction that is... Come if you want, but if you go back, you can't tell anyone about us leaving."
Erin said, as she silently cast a spell over Twilight to hex her if she told.
"Sorry about the hex, but Madame Pince would go nuts if she found out we did this."

Purr - November 13, 2007 07:54 AM (GMT)
Running to get out of sight, Alex stood behind the bookshelf with the rest of the group. It looked like it could have been a close call, and Alex didn't want to get on the librarian's bad side, as he hoped to check out a book from the restricted section later this week legitimately.
"Are we going or not Erin? You are the one leading us I assume, so lead on, before we get caught."
Ankaa - November 13, 2007 10:24 AM (GMT)
"Yeah I agree" nodded Ankaa who was peeping out from behind the bookcase, keeping lookout for anyone else who came along
"The longer we hang around here looking suspicious, the more likely someone is to catch us. Let's get going and if anyone's not here, well they'll just have to miss out."
Twilight - November 14, 2007 04:45 AM (GMT)
"Hey, no need for the hex, Erin," Twi whispered. "There's no way I'd rat you guys out. I'm not sure where we're going, but I'm in!"
pyrii - November 14, 2007 11:10 AM (GMT)
"Good to hear Twi, because I just spied us a L-space junction... so we won't even spend any time having to look for one to enter."
Erin Grinned at Twilight, and turned abruptly away, and started running towards what looked like a alcove of books up ahead. As one approached the end of the alcove, perspective seemed to get distorted, and at the very end, the library seemed to curve inwards upon itself, and a hole, which looked very odd indeed, opened in the floor, leading into L-space.
"Hurry up people! I advise taking the gap while running, and then a jump. It will be unsettling anyways since this junction is at a 90 degree intersection with our reality... but you can manage I am sure!"
She said, and did a running jump into the hole. As she fell, the differing gravities of the two dimensions sorted themselves out, and she landed on the other side, what was once the floor, now being forward in her personal view of the universe. She shook her head out, still not used to the shifting gravities, and waited for the others.
((OOC: Just try to figure out what I am talking about if you all can. I've recently beat the game Portal, so that gave me the idea for such weird dimension exploring adventures. PM me if you get too confused as to what is going on... and I will explain as well as I can. And if you have a good computer, like puzzles, physics, and crazed computers, I would recommend Portal to you.
ALSO I will post some little metaphysics lessons, that will explain some things that may not be easy to comprehend. All drawn by me. ;)))

Twilight - November 15, 2007 02:28 AM (GMT)
Twi watched as Erin ran, jumped and disappeared into another dimension. "I hope she knows how to get back," Twi thought, "Because I didn't pack a lunch or anything."
Then she grabbed her backpack, ran to the spot where Erin had disappeared, and she jumped ...
Twi felt like she was falling sideways. Gravity seemed to be all over the place. Erin was right about it being unsettling.
Suddenly she landed on her feet, more or less, and she stood there trying to get oriented.
REMY-SALINAS - November 19, 2007 10:41 PM (GMT)
Remy: Slytherin's Official Future
Remy saw erin and twilight begin run inot the portal that had appeared. He looked at mark and grinned "hey let's not let them get away from us" as he ran and jumped into the L-space junction. He landed on the other side and had to kneel down as he felt really odd. He felt as if had apparated but it felt so much worse.
Purr - November 19, 2007 11:13 PM (GMT)
Alex thought he heard the floor creak as the Librarian got up from her desk, and took a running leap through the junction behind Remy, and crashed into Twilight on the other side. The disorientation didn't really affect him as much, as he had gone through L-space several times at Beauxbatons, but he wasn't expecting everyone to be right on the other side of the portal.
"Sorry Twilight.."
Alex said, blushing a bit before getting up.
"Hey... before Ankaa, and Mark come through, we should probably move out of the way of the portal for them."
REMY-SALINAS - November 20, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)
Remy: Slytherin's Official Future
Remy nodded his head as he heard alex's suggestion and he got up from the floor. He was feeling a lot better now that he had gotten a little more used to the gravity here and he moved a bit further and to the side than where he had been on the floor. He waited to see who else would come through the junction.
Twilight - November 21, 2007 02:04 AM (GMT)
"No problem, Alex," Twi said as she picked herself up off the floor and moved out of the way.
She dusted herself off. She was still a bit disoriented, so she sat down to watch the others would come through.
Emma Potter - November 21, 2007 02:52 AM (GMT)
Emma watched from behind a section of the library as people that she respected as smart, jumped into a hole. "Oh my god, this has to be good." she said to herself, snapping the book shut and placing it back in a pile of books. Following several people, she turned a corner and walked up behind Mark. Walking in front of them, she looked back, her cinnamon red, curly hair moving over her shoulders. "Lady's first, hope you dont mind." she said with a grin, and jumped into the hole. She fell down, and landed around several other people.
"Hey guys, hope you dont mind me dropping in." she said with a smile.
pyrii - November 22, 2007 10:26 AM (GMT)
"Ello there Emma... glad to see we have more company. I certainly hope you aren't NEEDED Anywhere for a couple days... because we may just get lost."
Erin said grinning. She waited for Mark to come through the junction, and then started some intensive spellwork, causing the edges of the L-space Junction to flicker, and finally, the entire portal disappeared, a blank stone wall where it once was.
The library the group now found themselves in was almost Escher like in its layout. Staircases descended from the roof to landings in the middle of the room. The only odd thing was, that staircase and landing both were facing 90 degrees off from the orientation they had now. Obviously gravity wasn't consitent throughout the gallery, as several staircases went sideways or upside down, and if one looked at the ceiling, one could see rows of bookshelves on it, with a large desk complete with quill pen, inkwell and scrolls being located directly above the group. The staircases that spanned all over the open air moved, changed positions, disappeared and reappeared every so often, as did the many L-space junctions that they led to and from. The whole setting was something out of a architect's nightmare, and it was best for anyone looking around to avoid looking at everything too much.
"Okay peoples... this is what I like to call the Hogwarts wing of L-space. Look at the architecture here, and remember what it looks like. If you get separated from the group, look for a place like this, and any portal you take out will lead SOMEWHERE in Hogwarts. One time I'm pretty sure I saw Professor Rogue in his study... but I couldn't find a staircase to lead up to the portal.
What we want to do today though, is we leave the hogwarts wing, and we head for the Grand Central Junction. From there we can get into almost any library on Earth."
((OOC: to get a idea of what L-space looks like, look up MC Escher, or check out some of the architecture he has drawn here: http://www.mcescher.net/ ))

Twilight - November 24, 2007 12:36 AM (GMT)
Twilight's mind boggled as she tried to figure out all the staircases.
"I'll never be able to find my way back here," she thought to herself. "I'll just have to make sure that I don't get separated from the others. Especially Erin. I sure hope she knows what she's doing."
"We can get to almost any library on Earth?" she said to Erin. "How about ones in the past, or the future? Can we get to those, too?"
Twi could see that the potential for getting lost was going to be huge.
Purr - November 26, 2007 12:20 AM (GMT)
"Theoretically, if we looked long enough, we could find any book ever written, or that will be written, and even some books that were meant to be written, but never were. Physics classes are confusing in Muggle schools, but before I transferred from Beauxbatons, I was in a magical metaphysics course, and some of the concepts they have in that class would make you think, and think, and then want to go have a lie down somewhere."
Alex said, and started to walk along the hallway created from huge bookshelves lining the path. He turned on his heel, and looked back at the group.
"Erin, where are we going? Anywhere in particular? I was working in gallery 32 before the schoolyear ended."
Ankaa - November 26, 2007 04:57 PM (GMT)
(ooc; Gah, you closed the door before I got through! I'm just gonig to assume that I made it before Mark!)
bic:
Ankaa looked around in wonder at the strange room before her. There seemed to be doors hanging in the middle of nowhere, even on the ceiling, and stairs in every single direction. She wondered out loud
"What would happen if you walked up those stairs? Do you think you'd fall off or does this L-space thing change gravity as well?"
pyrii - November 27, 2007 02:30 PM (GMT)
((OOC: I'm SO SORRY Ankaa... I knew I forgot someone... but I was a bit absent minded with that last post.))
"Gravity shifts as you walk onto different surfaces... but its a bit unsettling... to say the least. I usually try to stick to one plane of gravity, as it saves you stomach aches, but Alex doesn't really seem to bothered by it."
Erin showed Ankaa by walking over to where a line of bookshelves broke into a walkway heading straight up towards a large ornate doorway. She hopped across the 90 degree angle, and stumbled a bit, and then waved at the group, now standing on a wall.
"See... just try not to get separated.. we can be a couple dozen yards apart, but if we are at different planes of gravity, it could take a good while to get back together."

Twilight - November 28, 2007 02:01 AM (GMT)
Twilight watched while Erin and Ankaa appeared to walk up a wall.
"This is a very strange place, at least in terms of gravity," she muttered. "It's probably strange in other ways, too."
Feeling slightly dizzy, she walked over to the bookshelves and then up (or maybe it was across, it was hard to tell anymore) to the ornate door where Erin and Ankaa stood.
Mark_EmmaWatsonFan - November 29, 2007 01:31 AM (GMT)
Now that they were down in the world of L space, Mark took afew second to look arund in marvel. He had heard of the phenomenon before but never experienced it first hand. He listen to Erin and Alex explained the concept of travelling to different libraries on earth. "Is that why were here then Erin, did you have a specific library in mind? or did you just fancy the adventure?" he asked with a grin before following her to the wall and joining the second plane of gravity which made them stick to the wall as if it were the floor.
Purr - November 29, 2007 03:06 PM (GMT)
Alex smiled at Mark's question, L-space was his element, and he knew it as well as anyone could, having done a good deal of study on it while at Beauxbatons.
"Well, a better question would be, is there anywhere you want to go? Erin, some of my old classmates, and myself have been trying to map out parts of L-space.. which isn't easy, as it keeps changing, but we have marked some places off."
Alex said, pointing to a large stone pillar that didn't seem to be supporting anything. On the side of the pillar was a large 15 scraped out of the stone.
"We've labeled this gallery 15. Beauxbatons has several doors in gallery 1... Problem is, since everything moves, its hard to keep track of everything."

Remy's ears perked up suddenly then he walked over to mark and gave him a nudge. "hear that Beauxbatons has several doors in gallery 1 so if you find gallery 1 we might use it to get into that all girls school maybe later we can go there and umm do some research for the good of hte shool of course professor silvershade" he grinned.
Ankaa - December 5, 2007 08:02 AM (GMT)
Ankaa reached out for the nearest door and placed her hand on, half expecting to feel it pulsing beneath her touch. This place seemed alive with magic, she could feel it tingling in the ends of her hair which had now taken on a life of it's own, almost as if she was under water.
"So, let's get this straight, we can go anywhere, at any time, as long as it's into another library?"
She looked at Erin and Alex for confirmation as they seemed to know all about this strange place.
