Title: The introduction of Sirius Black
Description: the unexpected twist
SiRiUsLyAdDiCtEd - February 3, 2005 11:03 PM (GMT)
well, y'all know he's my favourite subject :P
by the time we were reading POA we already knew: nothing is what it seems!
so did i think sirius was a good guy? defenitly NOT  . but i had a feeling there had to be more to it - especially after sirius tried to attack the wrong boy. come on! you don't break out of prison to chase a boy and then accidently get the wrong one! and the fact that he hadn't been cought made me believe he was pretty careful and knew what he was doing.
i thought jk did an outstanding job keeping us in the dark and on our toes so that the twist in the end came totally unexpected (at least i wasn't expecting that :D ). it was so grabbing! and i totally loved it that harry finally had someone to take him away from the dursleys' like he had always hoped for when he was younger .
it has been a little while since i've read the books but am planning on re-reading them again pretty soon. bit closer to the release date B)
so what did you think when he was first introduced?
bianca
whiteflame - February 4, 2005 12:33 AM (GMT)
when i first read about him, im tought sarcastically to myself, oo, wow, someone else trying to kill him. im sure that hes just as worried about him, as voldie.
i think she did a good job too. and to come and find out that sirius was lupins friend and harrys godfather. who was expecting that. seriously
for harry to find out that he had more family had to be a real shock. and the posibility of him finally moving out of his uncles house was awesome.
but what i want to know is why would harry choose his animagi to be a dog, james's be a stag, and pettigrews to be a rat. i mean tehre are slight resemblences between pettigrew and the rat, but sirius and a dog? james and a stag? i dont get it.
how are you supposed to choose something like that? cuz if i went thru the vigorous training to be an animagi, i wouldnt want to choose a fish and realize that u cant breathe above water and want to change it.
this is getting off topic. does any one think i should make this into a thread by itself?
Shonk Da 'Onk - February 6, 2005 01:07 AM (GMT)
 I should of guessed you would make a thread like this Bianca
I can't even remember if I thought he was evil or whatnot. It was so long ago. I think I did though but then again all I really do remember is that I had 2 borrow the 3rd 1 from the skool libary bcoz I had to wait to get my own copy coz they had none left! <_<
Lianslo - February 9, 2005 09:47 PM (GMT)
I never would have guessed it....I was scared of him! Especially when he was in Harry's dorm room, I really thought Harry narrowly escaped something there! I will never forget reading the end of this book...I was on the edge of my couch, w/ my face very close to the page. Talk about suspense! :)
SiRiUsLyAdDiCtEd - February 10, 2005 05:18 AM (GMT)
did you like the twist? or did you think it was lame?
i absolutely loved it...hehe! he didn't seem like a psycho to me or anything (i'm saying that cause in the movie he kinda seemed that way). you could tell very quickly that he was a great person and a true friend. one of the things that made me like him so much right from the start (after we found out he's a good guy of course) was when pettigrew was trying to find excuses for what he had done and was asking sirius something like "what would you have done?" or "what should i have done? and sirius yelled " i would have died before...." (or was it " you should have died before....")
lol....i might just have to look that part up tonight :P
Lianslo - February 10, 2005 08:08 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure if its in the book, or just the movie. But he says something like....oh darn, now I have to look it up. *reaches for book* Alright...this is hard core book evidence for ya. I found two spots where Sirius states that he would have put his life on the line before betraying his friends.
"Believe me," croaked Black. "Believe me, Harry. I never betrayed James and Lily. I would have died before I betrayed them."
"You don't understand!" whined Pettigrew. "He would have killed me, Sirius!"
"THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED!" roared Black. "DIED RATHER THAN BETRAY YOUR FRIENDS, AS WE WOULD HAVE DONE FOR YOU!"
What a guy.
Oh, and heres the movie quote.
Peter Pettigrew: What would you have done, Sirius?
Sirius Black: I would have died. Died rather than betray my friends, Peter.
And to answer your question Bianca, I didn't find the twist lame at all. I loved it! JK had me whole heartedly believeing he was a killer...but...she soon had me whole heartedly believeing that Sirius was innocent...she tied up all the loose ends so well that there was nothing left to do but believe it! :)
PrinceofBlades - February 15, 2005 02:12 AM (GMT)
Well, i like you also disliked the character. However when Harry began to learn more about the character, so did I. And thats when I knew Sirius coulnd't be bad.
Coldfire - February 15, 2005 04:30 AM (GMT)
I was kinda wondering about the guy when he nearly "attacked Ron" in the middle of the night. I mean, I was like "Well if he really wanted to kill Harry, wouldn't he have at least gotten the right BED????"
I was still wondering about him for a while, until we got to under the whomping willow and into the shrieking shack (or whatever its called). Then I saw that Sirius wasn't bad, but Peter Pettigrew, disguised as a rat, was, and that PETTIGREW wanted Harry dead, not Sirius.
I liked Sirius, and how he cared so much for Harry. And in the battle scene in the fifth book, in the department of mysteries, I was on the edge of my seat as well, and I couldn't BELIEVE that JK Rowling had killed Sirius!!! :o
Lianslo - February 15, 2005 08:26 AM (GMT)
Perhaps the reason I didn't guess it was cuz I really sped through this book. I remember having something to do that night...but REALLY wanting to finish the book. Anyways...I was floored by the twist ending.
I also found it very cute when Sirius suggested that Harry stay with him. He was all nervous, but little did he know that Harry would be all for it!

She didn't kill him. Do you know what that curtain does? Same thing a black hole does, take you in one end and out the other. But since no one knows where the other is, you lost until your found. It was also said to be ables to summon the most powerful and dark creatures that would make even the most stout minded dementor tremble in it's place. Rumor has it that every dark creature escaped from that "prison" once and very few were put back in. It explains why the Forbbiden forest is so dangerouse and well, forbbiden. But that's just a little fun fact for ya.
Coldfire - February 16, 2005 04:32 AM (GMT)
Well he might not be ACTUALLY DEAD, but he MIGHT AS WELL BE, cause he is some other place entirely!! So techniqually, you can call him dead. or simple GONE, if you want it that way. :)
PrinceofBlades - February 17, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
Well, a literature assumption is what poeple did with Sirius in thinking that he was bad. It's what people are doing now with umbridge. Don't assume the type a character is for the same reason you don't count your chickens before they hatch. You might be wrong.
mwiley - February 24, 2005 11:20 PM (GMT)
Well i dunno, but there must have been some reason, to bad he died in the fifth book, he was almost like a father to harry, a father that knew how to have some fun at that. :P But it was a very surprising part of the book, I didn't think sirus of all people would be the one to die
Lianslo - February 26, 2005 07:18 AM (GMT)
I agree with you wiley...poor Harry, he loses everybody who even comes close to being his family.
In relation to the Umbridge comment. Perhaps I'm counting my chickens before they hatch...but I don't think someone who makes their students cut words into the backs of their hands can be anything but pure evil.
scarletwoman - March 6, 2005 06:29 AM (GMT)
i love sirius! and i agree, JKR did an AWESOME job with makin us believe sirius was a trador. and it turned out to be that stupid low-down no-good RAAAAAAAAAT! sry, i have some slight unresolved anger against "scabbers." i felt just as hurt as ron did b/c i HATED crookshanks for trying to eat him. grrrrrrrrr...i want to apologize to poor crookshanks but the fact that he doesnt really exist makes that kinda hard. i need to quit rambling.
I'M SORRY CROOKSHANKS!
Lianslo - March 7, 2005 07:58 AM (GMT)
lol - don't worry, I'm sure Crookshanks will forgive you. ;) But I also had a soft spot for that rat - before I found out he was a traitor that is. And yes - I despise Wormtail. Its like Sirius said, they would have given their lives for him, and yet, he betrayed his own friends.
flounder21 - March 15, 2005 11:17 PM (GMT)
when i 1st heard about sirius i wondered how harry was gonna escape from a killer who escaped from the most protected jail. when i learned he wasnt evil i liked him immediately becuz he escaped from azkaban just to get revenge for the death of his best friend. i thought that was very sweet of him so he grew to be 1 of my favorite characters!!!

I loved the twist!! It was good!! I thought he was a evil, but after a while, you just knew he wasn't. Its really too bad that he had to die in the fifth book, i was looking forward, to hearing more about him in the next book.
Lupin231 - March 30, 2005 06:47 PM (GMT)
I think it was really cruel that she had to kill him i almosed cried when i read it for the first time but theres probably a reason given in the next book. All this conversation makes me want the next book even more!!
scarletwoman - March 30, 2005 10:19 PM (GMT)
i DID cry. i was so sad. she did say that there was a reason.
BarbieGirl - March 31, 2005 04:45 AM (GMT)
I cried when I read the book the second time!! JK said there was a reason she HAD to kill Sirius off, I cant wait to find out what that is! It had better be a good reason.............! LoL
Lianslo - April 1, 2005 07:47 AM (GMT)
Thats another thing to think about - what reason could their be? Do you think its something big that will fall into place later? I have no clue at the moment, I'll have to give this more thought.

Then why couldn't she of choosen someone else?
I mean, did she have to choose him...
WHY Jk.... WHY?? :(
scarletwoman - April 20, 2005 03:54 PM (GMT)
well, she didnt say there was a reason for just killing ANYBODY off. she said there was a reason for killing HIM off. which sucks. i cried when i read it. i love sirius and i still cant believe he's gone.
annalise - May 15, 2005 05:41 PM (GMT)
i totally loved the twist and i absolutely adore sirus. he is probly my favorite character. :wizard:
lilly potter - June 9, 2005 01:20 PM (GMT)
i really thought he was a killer then my senses caught up with me, why didn't sirius escape when harry was in his first year at hogwarts, why escape after he has spent 2 years at hogwarts then i grew even more suspicious when he attacked the wrong boy.
really it did not make sense. :)
lilyflower - June 9, 2005 05:45 PM (GMT)
I really didn't think that much about Sirius just that he was pretty smart for escaping askaban.
But then after I found out why he went through all that i thought it was really sweet and he somehow became 1 of my favorite characters.
I did cry when he died it was sad, but she should have a good reason for doing it.
mwiley - June 11, 2005 10:48 PM (GMT)
I totally loved the way she made him look so terrible, and then suddenly changed that to good...it was like breath taking. She better have a good reason for killing him off!! He was one of my favorite charators...it was so sad to see him die...
FISH - July 30, 2005 11:52 PM (GMT)
PoA was an ok book but it was intersting becuase of seroise black.....hes really cool!
RWeasly2008 - July 31, 2005 02:31 AM (GMT)
Yeah PoA was a really good book, many twists, its one of my favorites!
FISH - July 31, 2005 04:33 PM (GMT)
i liked it but its def not one of me favs my fav was the 1st and
mwiley - August 16, 2005 05:43 AM (GMT)
First and ...what fishy?
And I agree with fish too, serious black was what made the third book so exiting. Otherwise it would have been harry battling voldemort again like all the other books.
afigirlafi - December 26, 2005 02:57 AM (GMT)
i thought when she introduced black i was like omghe is gonna go after harry!! just to get voldie hapy but hten the twist it was an awsome book!
Sardine - December 26, 2005 05:04 AM (GMT)
I like the fact that she put Sirius in PoA!
I think it makes up for her putting Lockhart in CoS!!!LoL!
afigirlafi - December 26, 2005 06:05 PM (GMT)
Sardine - December 26, 2005 08:57 PM (GMT)
Thanx!
I wonder if she really did do that tho...hmmm...
afigirlafi - December 26, 2005 09:33 PM (GMT)
i dont think so but oh well i loved that book and the 5th!
mwiley - January 17, 2006 01:40 AM (GMT)
I loved the third book!! The introduction of sirius black was great!! I just wish he didn't have to die in the fifth book. Such a shame, everyone harry reallyt cares about dies, (cept ron and hermione)
whiteflame - January 17, 2006 02:21 AM (GMT)
and i've heard rumors they might die as well? i kinda hope they do, that way it will keep the story going
or at least come close to it and harry sacrifices himself for them
afigirlafi - January 18, 2006 12:58 AM (GMT)
woah i never heard that they
are gona die but it is a good
spoiler! but i really doubt that is gonna happen anywayz back to topic. umm it really was a shame that sirius had to die in the 5th book but i have a feeling that he is gonna comiunicate with harry in a way like in book 4 like harry's parents did.
