Description: Find out about the magical creatures
alrerretta - April 27, 2007 04:20 AM (GMT)
Alfie pick up a book that said,
Magical Creatures
As she read it she saw written:
This book was wriiten and copy from other books on the creatures in the magical world.
Authors: the students of Hogwarts
You may write things about magical creatures that you have learned from family and can copy from thwe books here at Hogwarts.
Alfie thought for a few min. and then desided that she would putr in an entry in this book too and hoped that other students would do the same.
Creature Name: Veela
Veela: Female spirits of eastern European folklore, veela are shapeshifting creatures believed to dwell in forests, lakes mountains and clouds. In their animal forms they can appear as swans, horses, falcons, snakes, or wolves, but they are at their most alluring and dangerous in human form, as beaitiful young girls with long flowing hair who dress in misty robes and dance under the midsummer moon. Young men who fall under their sway lose all reason. They become dazed and forget to eat, drink, or sleep, often for days. Anyone unlucky enough to come upon veela dancing must join them and dance, dance, dance until they die of exhaustion, And woe to anyone who steps on a fairy ring-the tamped down circle of grass where the veela have danced- for bad luck or illness is sure to follow. Although veelacan be benevolent toward humans and share their gifts of healing and prophecy, they are quite temperamental. They will not tolerate being lied to or deceived and can inflict terrible punishments, especially on anyone who breaks a promise.
In some traditions, veela have been known to marry humans, settle down, and raise families, apparently without ill effect for either species. Fleur Delacour, Beauxbatons' Triwizard champion, had a veela grandmother, and she seems nice enough, but we wouldn't want to get her angry.
will's gurl - April 27, 2007 07:39 AM (GMT)
will's gurl picked up the book that Alfie put down entitled Magical Creatures. OOH!! I know all about lots of different creatures! but I will only write about one so that other people can add to the book. Let's see... will's gurl scanned the book. I think I will add some information about... the... Lethifold.will's gurl took out a quill, some ink, and a news paper article containing a story about a lethifold attack. will's gurl started writing.
The lathifold(aka. the living shroud) is extremely rare and dangerous. it is classified in the ministry of magic as xxxxx. they are only found in tropical areas. They smother their victom in their sleep, then digest them slowly. they resenble a black cloak. the earliest account of a lethifold, was written by Flavius Belby. this is the article: Near one o clock in the morning, as i began to feel drowsy, I heard a soft rustling close by. Beleiving it to be nothing more than the leaves of the tree outside, I turned over in my bed with my back to the window, and caught sight of what appeared to be a black shadow sliding underneath my bedroom door. I lay motionless trying to sleepily devine what would have made such a shadow in a room lit only by moonlight. Undoubtly my unnatural stillness made the lethifold think its potential victim was sleeping. to my horror, the shadow began to creep up the bed, and I felt its slight weight on me.it resembled nothing much as a rippling black cape, the edges fluttering slightly as it slid up towards me. Paralized with fear, I felt its clammy touch upon my chn before I sat bolt upright.the thing attempted to smother me, sliding inexcorably up my face, over my mouth and nostrils, but still I struggled, feeling it wrap its coldness about me all the while. unable to cry for assistance, I groped for my wand. Now dizzy, as the thing wrapped itself about my face, incappable of drawing breath, I concentrated with all my might on the stupifying charm and then- as that failed to subdue the creature, thuogh blastin a hole through my bedroom door- upon the impediment hex wich likewise availed me naught. still struggling madly, I rolled side ways and fell heavily to the floor, now intirely wrapped in the lethifold. I knew I was about to lose conciousness completely as I suffocated. Desperately, I mustered up the last reserve of my energy. Pointing my wand away from myself into the folds of the deadly creature, summoning the memory of the day when I had been voted president of the local gobstones club, I conjured the patronus charm. Almost at once, I felt fresh air upon my face. I looked up to see that shadow being thrown into the air on the horns of my patronus. It flew across the room and slithered out of sight.
The patronus is the only spell that repells a Lethifold is the Patronus chrrm wich is conjured by concentrating on your most happy moment, and sayind EXPECTO PATRONUM! The lethifold is slightly thicker after it has digested someone. people often fake Lethifold attacks. one case, a man left a note saying he was being attacked by one, leaving wife and children behind. then he was found a few months later living in another town with another woman. Lethifolds can take on other forms and often pass off as cloaks then someone will put it on, and good-bye person.

Creatures Name: RED CAP
Students of Hogwarts know well enough to keep their distance from red caps.
In Defence Against the Dark Arts students learn how to identify these creatures.
Red Caps are also called bloody cap, or red comb. These creatures look like evil goblins and haunt the ruins of castles where bloody battles have occurred. They have long gray hair , fiery red eyes, and protruding teeth. The red cap might be mistaken for a very ugly old man, were it not for his distinctive red hat. The hat is red from being soaked in blood.
Red caps carry a walking stick that has a metal spike on the end, and will happily use it on anyone foolish enough to wander into a ruined castle.
Red caps love fresh victims so they can use the blood to brighten their red caps.

Boggart - A boggart in the Harry Potter fictional books is a shape-shifter that takes on the form of its intended victim's worst fear. It generally likes to hide in dark, enclosed places, such as in cupboards, under beds, or in hollow trees. Due to its tendency to hide in relatively small spaces, it is likely that a boggart's natural form is fairly small, about the size of a large rat. However, no concrete reference has yet been made regarding its true appearance or size.
The term is derived from the boggart of British folklore; these creatures are annoying household spirts, but do not traditionally have shapeshifting abilities.

Ooc: I think it would be nice to have the name of the thing you are writing about larger then the rest, this way if someone is looking for a certian spell, herb, potion, Etc. it will be easly to find.
Like this: BIC.

They give off a very powerful smell of rotten fish and every once in a while sparks fly out of the end of the skrewt and propell it forward a few inches.
It is unknown what they eat, but it does seam as though they will kill each other, why this is, is uncertain at this time.

OOC:Not to be rude, but do you want my help or not?
Dementor - A soul-sucking fiend. They served as the guardians of the wizard prison
Dementors are blind, therefore they can sense and feed on the positive emotions of human beings to move around, forcing them to relive their worst memories. Their presence alone makes the surrounding atmosphere grow cold and dark, and the effects are compounded by the number of Dementors present in the area. People who are exposed to the Dementors for too long become depressed, and are often driven to insanity, ie. Azkaban's well-deserved horrible reputation.

Dragons
Western Dragon: AKA "The King of Serpents", the Western Dragon differ from other serpents in having a crest upon their head and a bear under their chin. Their bright eyes see all things. All have teeth. Many have horns or even antlers. Some are black with green bellies, some are red, some yellow, and some the color of ash. Many eat poisonous herbs, and their breath infects the air. The blood of a dragon is a miraculous elixir that heals grievous wounds and enables the conqueror of the beast to understand the speech of birds and other living things(actually, this piece is from Norse Mythology). When mixed with honey and oil, the fat of the Dragon restores sight.
Chinese Dragon: AKA "Emperor of Earth, Sea, and Sky", the Chinese Dragon, unlike the evil Dragon of the West, is a powerful and benevolent ruler of sky, earth, and sea. It is one of the four spiritual animals, a bringer of good fortune, and the founding figure of royal families. This dragon is all rhythmic energy-joyously whirling, twisting, and leaping among the clouds. Horns grow from its horselike head, and long whiskers curve from its bearded muzzle. IT has a scaly body and four legs. It often plays with a ball of light as silver as the moon or as gold as the sun. Called a sacred pearl, the globe is thought to be the source of the Dragon's power.
Dragon of India and Ethiopia: AKA "Scourge of Marsh and Mountain", the Indian Dragon is the largest of all earth Dragons. Its natural enemy is the elephant. Hunters seek the serpent for the mystical gem in its head. ...the swift Dragon of the mountains has golden scales, a bushy beard, and a tall crest the brightness of fire. The gaze of its deep-set eyes can paralyze an animal or human being. It has teeth, but its venom is not fatal. It kills with the strength of its tail. Living in the depths of the earth, it makes a sound like clashing brass when it moves. To satisfy its hunger, the Dragon preys upon the elephant.
Hydra: AKA "Multiheaded Terror of Heaven and Earth", the Hydra is a Dragon with many heads. As soon as one of heads is destroyed, others grow in its place. Hydra is the genus of freshwater polyps, whose many arms, some say, resemble the monster's serpentine necks.
Nagas: AKA "Serpents of the Waters", the Nagas are Dragons of the earth, waters, sky, and the heavens. These creatures take on different forms. Some are all serpent, with many heads. Some have the heads or upper bodies of humans and lower bodies of serpents, and yet others resemble humans with snakes crowning their heads or growing from their necks. Hidden Nagas are guardians of treasure deep within the earth. Divine Nagas of the sky form clouds and produce fertile rain, but when angered they devastate the earth with floods. Heavenly Nagas guard the temples of the gods. Nagas are said to possess a divine pearl of knowledge within their coils. Both beneficent and destructive, they give rubies to human beings who win their favor, but their venom is deadly.
Rainbow Serpent: AKA "Dragon of the Rain and Rivers", the Rainbow Serpent is striped with all the colors of earth and sky, and is one of the most beautiful of all the Dragons. One of its kid lives in the ocean and, when it moves, waves begin to roll. Others live in the earth or in ponds and rivers.
Salamander: AKA "Denizen of Fire", the Salamander is a small four-footed Dragon, might beyond its size. This spotted lizard-like beast is so cold it extinguishes flames at will, and produces "Salamander's Wool", a magical fire-resistant fabric. It is one of the deadliest of animals and destroys entire villages with its poison. This creature is found near fire. It is also seen around the foot of volcanoes, living in the head of the flowing lava. The Salamander exudes a milky liquid from its skin and mouth. Anyone touching the foul matter loses his or her hair, and the contaminated flesh discolors and breaks out in a rash. When the Salamander climbs a tree, its poison infects the fruits and kills all who eat it. And when the serpent falls into a well, it spreads deadly disease to everyone who drinks the water. If a pig eats a Salamander, the pig remains healthy, but anyone eating the pig dies. To the alchemists, the Salamander is the spirit of fire, an essential agent in transforming base metals into gold.
Unicorns
Karkadan: AKA "The Fierce Unicorn of Persia", the Karkadan is bull-like with a long, curved horn growing from its forehead. This monster's horn is so deadly, its breath so vile, and its bellow so thunderous that it strikes terror in most living creatures. Among the beasts, only the elephant stands its ground against the Karkadan. Karkadan horn is made into knife handles that sweat in the presence of poison.
Ki-Lin: AKA "Ethereal Herald", the Ki-Lin is one of the four auspicious animals of China, and king of the 360 beasts of the earth. It has the body of a stag, the tail of an ox, the hooves of a horse, and a long fleshy horn growing from its forehead. A gentle creature, it will not tread upon insects or eat living grass. The Ki-Lin embodies both male and female powers. Born in the center of the earth, it lives beyond the clouds, appearing to mankind only to presage the birth of a great person, to herald reign of a benevolent Emperor, or to foretell a ruler's impending death.
Lamia: AKA "Deadly Beast of the Desert", the Lamia is a monster of the Libyan desert, it devours children and lures men to their doom. The best-known creature of this kind is a four-footed beast with the head and breasts of a woman, a scaly, dragonlike body, and a long horselike tail. Its forefeet clawed like a bear's, and its hindfeet cloven like a goat's, this Lamia is said to be one of the swiftest of all creatures, able to run down any prey. It also kills by deceit. With the seetness of its voice, it draws desert travelers near-and then to their death. The beast also travels to the sea at the edge of the desert and lies in wait to attack shipwrecked sailors who wander ashore. Other Lamia are in the shape of women above the waist and serpents below.
Yale: AKA "The Beast with Movable Horns", the Yale is one of many strange animals of India/Ethiopia. This creature is tawny or black, is the size of a horse, and has the tail of an elephant, the jaws of a boar, and long, sharp horns that it can move at will. When the Yale is attacked by man or beast, it points one of the horns forward like a lance and swivels the other back out of harm's way. If the thrusting horn is damaged in the battle, it turns backward and the second horn rises to take its place. The Yale is portrayed in ancient Egyptian paintings, and it guards the temples of India.
Crocotta: AKa "Beast with a Human Voice", the Crocotta is the dog-wolf of India, and is a deadly enemy of dogs and men. This gluttonous beasts digs up the buried dead and prowls about farms at night. To lure dogs to their death, the Crocotta imitates the sound of a man vomiting. When the dogs hear it, thinking it is a man, they follow the sound, only to be attacked and devoured. It is said that the Crocotta can change its color at will and that it is alternately male and female. Animals that attempt to circle it stick fast in their own tracks.

Name: Hippogriffs
Hippogriffs are proud animals who likes to be treated profesionally. You must bow to the hippogriff and have the Hippogriff bow back to you in order to pat them, fly them or come anywhere near them. There is no spell, herb or potion to make the Hippogriff like you, but yourself inside. Do not blink when bowing, they do not like blinkers(people who blinks a lot), they trust them as unworthy of their pride. Pull their feathers or insult them, and blood will be spilled from you. So, mind you get your manners before you come anywhere near one.
They eat certain meats, but the meats are quite unknown to me.
Name: Basilisk
Copyright: J.K.Rowling & Bloomsbury Children Publishers
Of the many fearsome beasts that roam our land,
there is none more curious or more deadly than the Basilisk,
also known as the King of Serpents. This snake, which may
reach gigantic size and live many hunderds of years, is born
from a chickens' egg and hatched beneath a toad. It's methods of
killing are most wondrous, for aside from it's deadly and ven-
omous fangs, the Basilisk has a murderous stare, and all who are
fixed with the beam of it's eye shall suffer instant death. Spiders
flee before the basilisk, for it is their mortal enemy, and the
basilisk flees only from the crowing of the rooster, which is fatal
to it.

Merpeople- sometimes Merfolk
Mermen are magical mythical creatures that are male from the waist up and are fish like from the waist down. The Greek showed them as having seaweed like hair, a beard and a trident. The Irish showed them as very ugly creatures, pointed green teeth, pig like eyes, green hair and a red nose.
Modern times show mermen as handsome, strong and brave and often wearing no clothing no matter what the temperture of the water. Their manners change depending on who is telling the tell. They are sometimes very ill tempered and are said to sink ships or cause storms. But sometimes they are shown as intellectual, and great teachers. Both mermen and mermaids are known to lure humans with their beautiful songs.
Mermaids are female from the waist up and fish like from the waist down. Mermaid are alot like Sirens in that they both lure humans with their songs. Some stories have shown mermaids to use their songs to enchant men so much that they walk off their ships causeing them to drown, or to loose control of their ships causing them to sink. Mermaids are sometimes called water fairies, water nymphs or selkies which are seals that are able to transform themselves into humans.

Hinkypunk
Hinkypunks are wispy one legged spirits , in folklore of England's west Country, the Hinkypunk is said to lurk in the remote areas at night.
They wait for an approaching traveler before he lights a lantern and steps into view. The weary perestrain, overjoyed to see a flicker of light in the distance, heads toward it, mistaking it for his destination or for a fellow traveler up ahead on the trail.
The next thing he knows, he falls in a ditch, sinks into a bog, or tumbles off a cliff-much to the amusement of the Hinkypunk.

Grim
The Grim is a spirit in the form of a menacing dog that has long been known in the British Isles as an omen of death.
The Grim are said t never leave the churchyards or burial grounds they inhabit. In both British and Scandinavian folklore :grim" can be a general term for a household spirit, but it is more commonly used to refer to the "church grim" a guardian of the dead souls that in England takes the form of a big shaggy black dog with fiery eyes. In Scandinavia, the church grim may also appear as a horse, lamb, or a pig.According to English tradition, the church grim bears the heavy responsibility of protecting a graveyard from the Devil and witches. :firedevil:

Hippocampus
Hippocampus is a XXX classification according to the Ministry of Magic.
They originated in Greece and have the head and forequarters of a horse and the tail and hindquarters of a giant fish. The species is usually found in the Mediterranean but there have been reports in 1949 of a blue roan speciman found off the coast of scottland which the scottish apparently domisticated. They lay large semitransparent eggs through which the Tadfoal my be seen.
A fact that I have found out by living around muggles is that they use the word for a part of the brain, and for a muggle seacreature that looks quite unique.
Dusty put down the pen finishing her part of the book and blew on the ink to dry it before laying the book down.

Centaur
Unlike the brooding and philosophical centaurs that roam the Forbidden Forest, the original centaurs of Greek mythology were a rowdy lot. Living in herds in the mountains of northern Greece.
The centaurs were lawless and love living that way.
Half man and half horse made the centaurs beautiful looking.
They loved drinking, fighting and seducing human women.
As in large families a few centaurs rebelled against the wild ways of their kin, preferring life of virtue and scholarly contemplation.
The most famous centaur was Chiron. He was renowned for his wisdom and sence of justice.
Chiron was skilled in medicine, hunting, herbology, and celestial navigation.
He was also a master of astrology and divination, talents clearly inheritedby the star-gazing centaurs of the forbidden forest.

Acromantula:
Ministry of Magic (M.O.M.) Classification ~ XXXXX (Known wizrd killer / impossible to train or domesticate)
The acromantula is a monstrous eight-eyed spider capable of human speech. It originated in Borneo, where it inhabits dense jungle. Its distinnctive features include the thick black hair that covers its body; its legspan, which may reach up to fifteen feet; its pincers, which produce a distinctive clicking sound when the acromantula is excited or angry; and a poisonous secretion. The Acromantula is carnivorous and prefers large prey. It spins dome-shaped webs upon the ground. The female is bigger than the male and may lay up to one hundred eggs at a time. Soft and white, these are as large as beach balls. The young hatch in six to eight weeks. Acromantula eggs defined as a Class A Non-Tradeable Goods by the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, meaning that severe penalties are attached to their importation or sale.
This beast is believed to be wizard-bred, possibly intended to gaurd wizard dwellings ot treasure, as is often the case with magically created monsters. (Beasts capable of human speech are rarely self-taught; the exception is the Jarvey. The Ban on Experimental Breeding did not come into effect until this century, long after the first recorded sighting of an Acromantula in 1794.) Despite its near-human intelligencethe Acromantula is untrainable and highly dangerous to wizard and muggle alike.
Rumors that a colony of Acromantula has been established in Scotland are unconfirmed.
"There." Drake said as he finished copying the page from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander about Acromantula into a book he found in the library with other written pages of magical creatures. "Now to finish off."
In the Chamber of Secrets Harry and Ron travel into the forbidden forest following abunch of spiders. The spiders lead them into the hollow of a Acromantula named Aragog, who was raised b Hagrid.

WerewolvesA werewolf is a being with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf at the time of the full moon.
The name most likely derives from Old English wer (or were) and wulf. The first part, wer, translates as "man" (in the sense of male human, not the race of humanity). It has cognates in several Germanic languages including Gothic wair, Old High German wer, and Old Norse verr, as well as in other Indo-European languages, such as Latin vir, Irish fear, Lithuanian vyras, and Welsh gŵr, which have the same meaning. The second half, wulf, is the ancestor of modern English "wolf"; in some cases it also had the general meaning "beast." (italisized words: as written in wikipedia online encyclopedia)
Werewolves do not technically exist except for the short period of time around the full moon. At other times, werewolves are completely human. A werewolf in human form may appear ill around the time of the full moon. They are, nonetheless, still considered werewolves whether they are in their human or wolf form.
A person becomes a werewolf when they are bitten by another werewolf. A werewolf can somewhat control his/her condition through use of the wolfsbane potion. This potion is, however, hard to make even for qualified witches and wizards. The most notable side effect of the potion is the werewolf's ability to retain human thought while transformed. This frees the werewolf from fear of harming other witches and wizards. A werewolf's condition cannot be fully cured.
A werewolf transformation is triggered by the full moon. A werewolf who makes regular use of the wolfsbane potion, however, may not transform unless they are actually touched by moonlight. Human awareness is nonexistent once a werewolf transforms (unless the werewolf is under the influence of the wolfsbane potion as mentioned earlier). They do not distinguish between friend and foe. A werewolf can be differentiated from a regular wolf by characteristics such as tufted tail, shape of eye pupils, and shape of snout.
Werewolves have been under ministry regulation since 1637 with the introduction of the Werewolf Code of Conduct. They have been tossed between the Beast and Being Divisions of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures for years. At one time, the Werewolf Registry and Werewolf Capture Unit were located in the Beast Division, while the office for Werewolf Support Services was in the Being Division.
Werewolves are generally shunned by wizarding society. Werewolf discrimination was taken to new heights when Dolores Umbridge introduced the anti-werewolf legislation in the 1990's. As a result of the legislation, many werewolves suffer poverty brought about by lack of employment opportunities. Due to this oppression, some werewolves have come to hate the wizarding society and so have formed their own society. These werewolves, under the leadership of Fenrir Greyback, served He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named during the Second Wizarding War.
