Ankaa - April 21, 2007 09:42 PM (GMT)
My name is Ankaa Smowl. I'm 11 years old in actual years, but in both my knowledge and attitude I'm much more mature.

I'm 5'10", very tall for my age, but it's a family trait as I'm so often reminded by my aunt. I've got dark brown, almost black eyes and very pale skin. I wear my hair long, purple and dreadlocked. I'm pretty much allowed to do what I want as there's really nobody to tell me not to.

I've been brought upby my aunt, Sinistra Smowl. We live in our family house, it's a big old rambling place in the middle of the Yorkshire moors, five miles from anywhere. I haven't seen my parents since I was a small girl, maybe two or three, and I only have vague memories of them. They've been away for many years and I'm not allowed to ask any questions about them, what they do, where they are or when they're coming back. My aunt spends much of her time locked away in her wing of the house and I only really see her for meals, and sometimes not even then. I don't know what she does but she has a lot of visitors who I'm never introduced to. The only secret I have from my aunt is that I can transform myself into a cat. I'm a bit of a scary looking moggy, big, sleek and black with unsual brown eyes and a white front right paw. I mostly do this to try and spy on her comings and goings but it's not always successful. It gives me a bit of freedom to roam about the house though. You see, we have a lot of cats here, at least 40, so an extra one now and again goes mostly unnoticed. I keep myself occupied by exploring all the different rooms full of old possessions from way back in my family's history and libraries stuffed to the brim with dark and dusty covered leather books. My aunt doesn't like me exploring - 'poking about' she calls it- so I try and do my turning into a cat thing and loiter about in a corridor until I know she's got visitors, and then hurry off to a quiet room to see what I can find. At least I know I can have a couple of hours to myself without having to look over my shoulder all the time.

I'm looking forward to going to school. It can get a bit lonely here sometimes when you've only got cats and house elves for company. Then again, I suppose my wandering will have to stop when I get to Hogwarts. Having to lives by rules and regulations will be a big change for me, and I don't like being told what to do!

Later....

One night at Hogwarts...
I've been restless all evening and when everyone else has gone to sleep and I'm still tossing and turning, I decide to get up and have a walk about the school. It usually calms me down when I'm back at home so I hope it works here. I creep out of the dormitory and I'm just about to leave the common room when I see a prefect out of the corner of my eye. As the prefect reaches to grab me and demands to know where I'm going, I poke him in the eye with my wand, wriggle my way out of his grasp and run down the corridor, determined to have my few minutes of freedom. I know I'll have to face the consequences later but at the moment it seems worth whatever punishment I may face.

[Character Personality:] I'm intelligent, inquisitive, sometimes lazy and easily bored, sarcastic, shy and a loner. It takes me a while to make friends but once I have, I'm fiercely loyal to them.
[History:] (your parents names and what they did for a living, when your character first displayed signs of magic ect.) I'm pretty much allowed to do what I want as there's really nobody to tell me not to. I've been brought up by my aunt, Sinistra Smowl. My aunt spends much of her time locked away in her wing of the house and I only really see her for meals, and sometimes not even then. I don't know what she does but she has a lot of visitors who I'm never introduced to.

I've been able to do simple forms of magic since I was about six or seven. My aunt taught me some basics, enough to satisfy my curiosity about what I could do, but not enough to get me into any trouble. The only secret I have from my aunt is that I can transform myself into a cat. I'm a bit of a scary looking moggy, big, sleek and black with unsual brown eyes and a white front right paw. [Please complete the following writing sample:]

You are sneaking out of your Common Room at night and a Prefect grabs your arm. They want to know why you are out of your bed after curfew and threaten to report you/take house points. Post this scenario from your characters point of view and beware of GodModing the Prefect's actions. This is to get an idea of how your character reacts and to get you considering their thought processes. You do not have to escape, simply react to the scene realistically. You may create a valid reason/excuse if your character is not the type to break rules (illness, note from headmaster, etc..).

Time for an update....

Ankaa is now 14, nearly 15 and is in her 3rd year at Hogwarts. Everything had been going so well at school recently after a shaky start. Ankaa wasn't used to people her own age and it had taken her a while to get used to things and make friends. Her last term at school had been great; her magic was coming along nicely and she'd had some great adventures with her friends. If only she'd known that the fast-approaching holidays would turn her life upside down.

Her aunt's owl had arrived two days before classes ended and it said that Ankaa was not to catch the train with the rest of the students, her aunt had arranged her own transport and she was to wait for it on the top of the Astronomy Tower at dawn in two days time.

Ankaa duly packed her things and made her way up to the Astronomy Tower just before dawn on the last day of school. Just as the sun broke over the horizon an enormous leathery-winged creature swooped round the tower and landed, impatiently clawing the ground while it waited for Ankaa to climb on it's back.

A whole 24 hours later, Ankaa was laid flat on the back of the giant bird, drifting in and out of sleep, when suddenly the bird started a steep descent, causing her to hold on even tighter than she had been doing already. As they broke through the clouds, Ankaa could see nothing but dark mountains and heavily wooded valleys below her. The bird continued spiralling downwards untilit eventually landed in a small clearing. Ankaa quickly dismounted and tried to get some feeling back into her freezing limbs. Her aunt came striding out from between two trees and said "Come along girl, we've got to get you tidied up" and beckoned Ankaa to follow her into a small cave. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, Ankaa could feel the cave opening out and as she slowly picked her way forwards, she eventually emerged into a cathedral-like space with many different levels of rooms and stairs hewn out of the very rock itself.

Aunt Sinistra let Ankaa take in the view for a minute then said "Welcome to my little holiday home. Now then, a bath first I think" as she wrinkled her nose in Ankaa's direction. Two small house-elves appeared and pulled at Ankaa clothing until she followed them.

A couple of hours later, after she'd bathed and eaten, the house-elves returned and took Ankaa to a cosy room with a circular table surrounded by a luxorious couch. They indicated she should sit herself down and wait, which she did.
