i think he wanted the job....but he didnt come there just to get rejected for the job .......he must have come there for a purpose....... and i am sure that he accomplished his purpose before leaving the castle...... but what did he do???

He wouldnt hide a horcrux at the school. Dumbledore or someone would have come upon it by now if he did. I think hewent to make surethat Dumbledore was serious in the no teacher position especially since he was a powerful wizard at the time already had the death eaters out and that kind of thing.

I think Voldemort/Tom did something to Dumbledore or something to one possesion of Dumbledore (maybe the Phoenix because the Phoenix always shows up as important). Whatever it was, I think it has to do with Dumbledore and his office. The job was just a cover up.

Voldemort wanted to get the job so he could try and teach the Dark Arts to students right there at Hogwarts. Plus he'd be inside Hogwarts, protecting him and allowing him access to the Castle.
He knew he wouldn't get the job, but when does Voldemort not do something to get something? He tried.
