Title: RPG Boot Camp

Professor Rogue - February 17, 2006 07:54 AM (GMT)
I've noticed for a while the extremly short post that students make around the boards but particularly in the role playing games. While I can understand the temptation in doing this, I'm concerned about this because post count is on in these boards and with short post like this:

*shakes head*
"How are you?"

I don't think it should really count because post count on = you receiving money. So, in an attempt to decrease this, I've written this RGP Boot Camp as a type of refresher course for everyone in how to role play properly. Basically, I'm giving you all suggestions in how to make your posts longer with detail. This way, the RPG will be more enjoyable to everyone - trust me.

Because really, in the example I posted above, if you were replying to it, the poster hasn't really left much for you to reply to? Does that make sense?

Lastly, check out the How to post a Character Bio?. I'm asking everyone to post one so that we can be more in sync with the RPG's here and have more fun.

Any questions, please ask!

This is awsome :shifty: You do like your Boot Camps don't you Reggie.

Sardine - February 17, 2006 08:22 PM (GMT)
Or maybe he just wants to make us feel bad?.!
Nah,im just joking Reggie!I understand what you mean by all that {Well, actually i havent read the things in the links yet,but i do get what you're saying here!}...Yep,for i was once one of the 'Ha-ha!Lets-post-one-line-of-nonsense-and-make-people-suffer' posters.
I didnt do on purpose though.

I think you should all check out these links and visit them to see what roleplaying is about:

Dialogue, A Forgotten Art.
Spare Me The Chatter
Writers and Role-Players Revised
Roleplaying Character Development
The Art of Powerplaying

Once you check out all this articles you'll see what serious roleplaying is about. One of the most important rules of roleplaying is, NO SPAMMING and that should be taken into account since many people make comments in serious roleplaying that do not contribute in any way to the rp.

This is an example:

Kremlin posted: Kremlin climbed down the ladder into a giant room full of gargoyles. At the center of this room, there stood an altar with a cup placed neatly on the mantlepiece. Kremlin approached and signaled Rocky to follow him.

Rocky posted: Rocky followed Kremlin and picked up the cup and saw inside.
"There's bacon here yummy!"

This last post is total spam. This is what many of us RP lovers have to go through with some people. This is an extract of a Star Wars rp from the past. First of all, where the blazes are you going to get bacon inside a Sith temple and most of all in a cup? It's totally silly. People should keep things serious, the comic relief element is a must but not making comments fully out of context though you may joke around but NOT spam. And also many tend to create characters that are almost god-like. So any descriptions like the following or similar to the following are considered godmodding and shouldn't be allowed:

"I'm an all powerful all knowing omnipotent beign able to whoop everything in the universe"

This always ruins the RP and should not be allowed. Also no one liner posts. Elaborate on you character's actions. Role-playing in forums is like writing a novel not a script. I just thought I'd point that out because I love this site and I would like everyone to know this so we don't fall into chaos like most of the other forums I have been in.

Professor Rogue - February 17, 2006 11:42 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the helpful links Lyla, and I don't want to sound like a parent, but if we could keep our lanuage in line, that would be great! :D

But I must stress that I don't want this to become "too serious" in the sense that people aren't having fun. I used to go to a lot of really serious role playing sites and I left because it was just too much. And I don't want that happening here at the LC. Most people don't really know how to really role play, or they do know but just don't. So I want to walk them through with this, step by step, so that they get it. But if we enforece too much on them, too soon, they won't get it.

Bascially, I see a lot of this in the Great Hall. I saw something like this the other day in one of the threads:

QUOTE
*looks scared*
ew, I'm going to hurl!

Not coming down on anyone for writing this, you didn't know. I just want to teach everyone how you can take something as simple as this, and turn it into this:

QUOTE
Rogue looked at the plate of noodles with cheese and completly lost it. His stomach turned and he put his finger up to his mouth.

"Ew, I'm going to hurl!" he said, taking his eyes of the plate.

He looked around the great hall for the nearest exit and with a mad dash, raced out of the hall in search for the nearest bathroom.

Notice how I turned those 2 little lines into all of that? It's because I was descriptive and that really helps I think. The next person who posts after me, now has something to reply to.

I know it might seem intimidating at first, but it's going to take practice. And if you really place yourself at Hogwarts, in the Great Hall or whatever, I'm sure you can come up with something.

Sorry Reggie....I guess I got a little carried away back there, I modified it and kept the bad stuff out and replaced it with good clean stuff hope that's better

Shonk Da 'Onk - February 18, 2006 07:11 AM (GMT)
No offence Reggie but what is with the sudden change of the rules?

I mean yeah the whole one liners and such is annoying & yeah it has always been against the rules but originally RPing here was a lot simpler.

We were alound to use *'s for actions ect but now we have to write it like a story? ^_^ Now I love writting but...yeah. Just seems rather sudden.

Sardine - February 18, 2006 07:42 AM (GMT)
I agree with Shonkie there...I find it easier to write and read when you use *'s for actions and such.
I understand that you want make this site and RPGing better, but we need to draw the line on the rules somewhere.

Kari,on that post about the dude saying that there's bacon in the cup, well, its like Reggie said (somewhere...),we must use our imaginations. And if i wouldve been in RPG and someone said that,id probably pack out laughing,or take it as a lame joke.So,yeah...

Shonk Da 'Onk - February 18, 2006 07:50 AM (GMT)
Thats the thing I am worried about. Everything going way too serious. I think it is good to have proper RP's and such but I enjoy the rather random ones better because ther are random and funny. Something you can laugh about because it is just so stupid. :P

Sardine - February 18, 2006 08:31 AM (GMT)
Yeah,it makes my day when we're in a RP,the someone just says some funny random thing. Its no fun if everything is like serious, and we have perfect grammer and such...Sure,i like writing,i like my English to be very good, but sometimes it just goes a little too far.

No offence taken Shonks, but I'm a little confused at what you're saying here. You ask why the sudden change of rules but then later admit that the one liners have always been against the rules? So I'm not sure what change you're really saying.

The original rules are posted here the thread was titled RP Rules! but I later changed it. But if you read that thread and compare it to the boot camp one, they are virtually the same. I mention the one liners, how it's spam and doesn't add anything to the adventure and everything. But I'm not changing anything. I'm emphasizing what I'd already written, that's all.

And if you want to use the * for action, by all means do so. Sometimes I use :: or I write it like a story. Doesn't mean you have to do yours like that. I'm more worried about the length and detail of your posts veruses if you use a * or not.

But I defaintly do not want to make this way too serious. I previously said that in one of my earlier posts. It can still be random and you can still laugh and stuff, no ones denying you that. I just want to teach everyone how to add more detail to your post and basically make it longer. Because right now, it's gotten way out of hand and sometimes it's not even one line. Sometimes its 3 words and come on, that's just a bit much. How do you reply to three words?

Shonk Da 'Onk - February 18, 2006 08:46 AM (GMT)
Acctually lately it hasn't been all that bad. There were the odd few that were way off but the New years Party for example went for pages and wasn't exactly detailed but didn't go into chatting or anything like that until the thread started getting a bit boring.

Wat I meant before was why we can't use *'s anymore...not about the post lengths. Sry for confussing you.

Professor Rogue - February 18, 2006 09:19 AM (GMT)
No, lately it hasn't been that bad. I think that has to do with other people posting a lot more and others being inspired to do so too, but I could be wrong. But I think the thread was necessary, seeing as that's basically what I've been hearing about threads getting boring. Hopefully with the refresher course, the bios and the Plot development thread, the bordom of threads will decrease seeing as we have untensils to prevent this from happening.

You can still use * around actions, as I said earlier, that is fine. I posted :: in the boot camp but if you want to use the star, that is fine.

Shonk Da 'Onk - February 18, 2006 09:38 AM (GMT)
Ok that's all good then but you may want to edit the Boot Camp thing because it states that we must do it the novel way ;)

  • Use the prose style
Wrong: "It's me Jamie and I told you to leave me alone!" *shakes head*
Right: "It's me Jamie, and I told you to leave me alone!" she said, shaking her head in frustration.

Yes, I agree the re-fresher coarse was needed but it still seems like a rather drastic change and a lot more serious. I'm gonna miss being able to be chased by Mr Ugly and buy cookies off Dementors. :P

angelsflame265 - February 18, 2006 12:27 PM (GMT)
We've always wanted you guys to post like that. We've asked members post like that before as well. Nothing has changed, we're just trying to inform everyone that this is how RP should be done.

Sardine - February 18, 2006 05:51 PM (GMT)
Ok,im sorry about what i said guys! Its just that i read a post saying that we musnt have random things...
With our Character Bio's,the Bio that we post in there, does that apply for all RP's?
And if it does,woohoo!Im a Metamorphungus all the time then!{Well,only if being a Metamorph. doesnt count as me being all powerful and better than everyone else!}
Anyway, just so thy knows,im gonna forget about being a Metamorph half of the time,I wont be all powerful and i wont, nay,DONT think that im better than the rest of you!

Thanx!

Professor Rogue - February 19, 2006 12:28 AM (GMT)
Okay Shonks, I'll try to make that a bit more clearer, but it also states that you can post character's actions around ::, but I'll make that a bit more clearer. But what I meant by the prose style, was to write more than just *shakes head* If you would like to skip a line after dialogue and write your action around a star or :: you can do that. Exmaple:

QUOTE
"Get off of me!" Rogue yelled.

::He shook his head in frustration because this was getting way out of hand. Who did this guy think he was? So mustering up all of his strength, Rogue jumped down off the stairs and kicked the boy square in the face.::

Notice how my action is more than just *shakes head*? I combined action with what I was thinking, and that's what I'm pushing for. Shonks, if you want to chase Mr. Ugly around, go right ahead. There's a place to do that at, I might add, perhaps in the Great Hall or in your dorm, but you can still do things like that. This isn't supposed to take the fun away, but enhance it.

When you say apply to all RP's do you mean that you have to act that way in all of them? Because if so, that would be a no. The Character bios are just a rough sketch of how your character is. Of course, it depends on the situation with how that character will react to things. If a bully cut in front of your character in the lunch line, how would your character react? A cowardly person would make funny faces, but not do anything, while a bold person would march right up to the bully and demand that they get in the back of the line. While a good too shoes might go get a teacher and let them handle it. It's things like that that the character bio is supposed to get you to think about.

As for being a Metamorphous, that's a high level skill that Tonks was I think. Just hold off with that for now until I open up Registration for thigns like this. :wizard:

Sardine - February 19, 2006 02:01 PM (GMT)
Ok,thanx!
With Metamorphungus, yes, its Tonk's skill...Is it ok if im still a Metamorph.,but i dont actually know how to use my skill yet, therefore,im partially oblivious to the fact that im a Metamorph?Would that be better?
