What book are you reading now?

Currently, I'm reading this fantastic murder mystery called The Name of the Game was Murder by Joan Lowery Nixon. If you like spine chilling suspense and edge of your seat danger, this is the book for you!

It's about this fifteen year old girl Samantha, who goes to visit her great Aunt Thea for two weeks. So she goes and they live in his huge castle. Aunt Thea's husband, Augustus, is a famous writer and he's so mean. Things get interesting when Augustus invites (or should I say blackmailed) 5 guest to the castle for a weekend game. It seems as though Augustus has found a secret about each of his guest and has written a book exposing all of their secrets! So now the hunt is on to find this manuscript and learn each of the guest secrets....I'm really enjoying it!

I'm reading Dune by Frank Herbert and The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien and Heir of the Empire by Timothy Zahn

Professor Rogue - February 8, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
What are those books about? I haven't read any of those. And is that science fiction Lyla?

Same question for everyone else who posted. When you name your book, could you give us a breif summary of what the book is about? Someone like me, might want to go and read it. Maybe even say what you're enjoying in the book and such.

And Emily, what is your favorite part in GoF? There must be something that this particular book that makes you keep reading it. What is it?

Princess Lyla - February 9, 2006 01:52 AM (GMT)
Well, Dune and Heir of the Empire are sci-fi novels and the Silmarillion by JRR tolkien is Fantasy.

This is a small summary of the books I'm reading:

"Dune" by Frank Herbert.- Set far in the future amidst a sprawling feudal galactic empire where planetary fiefdoms are controlled by noble Houses that owe allegiance to the Imperial House Corrino, Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides, heir apparent to Duke Leto Atreides and scion of House Atreides, as he and his family relocate to the planet Arrakis, the universe's only source of the spice melange. In a story that explores the complex interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, the fate of Paul, his family, his new planet and its native inhabitants, as well as the Padishah Emperor, the powerful Spacing Guild, and the secretive female order of the Bene Gesserit, are all drawn together into a confrontation that will change the course of humanity.

If you don't understand the word Fiefdom here's what it means:
Fiefdom: Under the system of feudalism, a fiefdom, fief, feud or fee, often consisted of heritable lands or revenue-producing property granted by a liege lord in return for a form of allegiance, originally often to give him the means to fulfill his military duties when called upon. However anything of value could be held in fief, such as an office, a right of exploitation (e.g. hunting, fishing) or a revenue rather then the land it comes from.

"Heir of the Empire" by Timothy Zahn.- The book is set around five years after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, in a time where the New Republic is young, and a new threat has arisen. From the Imperial Remnant section of the Galaxy, comes Grand Admiral Thrawn, a new military leader of the Empire hoping to overthrow the New Republic and restore control of the galaxy to the Empire.

"The Silmarillion" by JRR Tolkien.- The Silmarillion comprises five parts:

1) The Ainulindalë ("The Music of the Ainur") - the creation of Eä, Tolkien's world.
2) The Valaquenta ("Account of the Valar") - a brief description of the Valar and Maiar, the supernatural powers within the Eä.
3) The Quenta Silmarillion (Silmarillion Proper, Song of the Silmarils) - the history of the events before and during the First Age, which forms the bulk of the collection.
4) The Akallabêth - the history of the Dawnfall of Númenor, which takes place in the Second Age.
5) Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age - the account of the circumstances which led to and were presented in The Lord of the Rings.

This five-part work is also informally associated by some readers with Bilbo's three-volume Translations from the Elvish, mentioned in The Lord of the Rings.

Well That sums up the three books if you make the time to read the sumaries. Now All you non-Star Wars fans might not be interested in Heir of the Empire, but if you know someone who has it or you have the chance to read it, it is a very entertaining story filled with suspense. The Silmarillion in it's spanish version inspired my writing in this particular language, whereas Dune inspired my writing in english. Along with Tolkien and JK Rowling.

Emily I love GoF too, it's my favourite HP book it's so full of suspense but action too so I love that.

Hermione+Ron4eva - February 19, 2006 03:38 AM (GMT)
I am reading the sisterhood of the travaling pants and Harry Potter 4

Dusty Dorsy - March 4, 2006 02:10 AM (GMT)
Right now I have Shelter of Stones the newest book in the Earth Children Series (the fifth book in the series) Im not sur eif the sixth book is out yet. And I would give a Description but the series can be a bit inappropriate for some of the members on here. I wouldnt recommend the book to under 18 people. Its a fiction Romance about the ice age. I am also reading the Complete Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy. Others that Im reading are Common Diseases for household pets, A Car Some Cash and A Place to Crash (Its about someone who has graduated and what it is like for them), The Gospel According to Sam its all these short stories about animals and how they have helped people.

and ill stop right there. :<<

bascially about Amazon.com
The torture and hell of adolescence has rarely been captured as clearly as it is in this classic diary by an anonymous, addicted teen. Lonely, awkward, and under extreme pressure from her "perfect" parents, "Anonymous" swings madly between optimism and despair. When one of her new friends spikes her drink with LSD, this diarist begins a frightening journey into darkness. The drugs take the edge off her loneliness and self-hate, but they also turn her life into a nightmare of exalting highs and excruciating lows. Although there is still some question as to whether this diary is real or fictional, there is no question that it has made a profound impact on millions of readers during the more than 25 years it has been in print. Despite a few dated references to hippies and some expired slang, Go Ask Alice still offers a jolting chronicle of a teenager's life spinning out of control. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Currently I'm reading Playing for Keeps by Joan Lowery Nixon. Has anyone heard of her? She's a famous mystery writer, I've read about 3 of her books so far and they are REALLY good. I'd recommend it to anyone. But I really appreciate the suspense, the myster and the thrills. The one I'm reading right now is about a girl Rose Ann and her and grandma go on a cruise and some interesting things happen there. Really good stuff.

I'm rereading Goblet of Fire. I recently watched the movie again, and now that I'm reading it again, I'm reminded at how much they didn't put in the movie... I would have loved to see the Weasleys bust into the Dursley's living room through the fireplace! And seen Dudley's tongue swell up to be 4 feet long from the twins' toffee's. And I think that Winky should have been in it somehow... Sorry...a little tangent there...

TwistedLogic-05 - August 2, 2006 09:02 PM (GMT)

I've just finished reading Spindles End, Merlin's Mistake, Shatterglass and the 2nd and 3rd books in the Dragon riders of Pern.

Spindles End is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty but Robin McKinley really puts a twist on it. I also like it because she tells you what happens between when the pricess is born and the birthday the curse is supposed to happen on. It does start out kind of slow.

Merlin's Mistake is about two 16 year old boys who go on a quest. The interesting part is that one of them is Merlin's godson and when he was born Merlin gave him a gift of Knowlege. Unfortunatly it went awry and he has the gift of all Future knowlege. Whech doesn't help much in that time period.

Shatterglass is the fourth book in the Circle opens quartet by Tamora Pierce. It follows the story of Tris. If you haven't read and of the Circle of magic books, The quartet brfore Circle opens, you should because they are great. They are about four kids who have different magical abilities and because of this are outcasts. they all end up together in a place called Winding Circle Where they are taught by others who also have their gifts.

The Dragon riders of Pern are really good and if you want to learn more aobut them then go to the Anne McCaffrey thread in the Cafe.
