Title: Was Remus in Love with Lily?
Professor Rogue - January 2, 2006 07:29 AM (GMT)
In the movie, very much more so than the book, Remus spoke very fondly of Lily, much more so than James. He stated that she was able to find beauty in everyone, especially when they could not see it in themselves. She was there for Remus at a time when no one else was. He recognized Harry not by his scar, or his resemblance to James, but by his eyes, Lily eyes.. strange when Harry is apparently a near carbon-copy of his father except for his eyes and the scar. Lupin was obviously disconcerted by Harry's comment that when the dementors focused on him he heard his mother screaming when she died.
Note that Remus states Lily was there for him when no one else was, this would include the other Marauders, his closest friends.
In the movie he speaks very affectionately of Lily, but makes very little mention of James.
I always thought it strange that four friends, so close in school, could have become so alienated from Remus that they would then suspect Remus of being Voldemort's spy in the first war. Note that Sirius, James, and Peter were involved in the plan to hide the Potters, Remus was not. Remus was not aware of the secret-keeper switch. Sirius specifically states that Remus was suspected and that is why he was not told.
Could it be that the wedge that drove Lupin apart from the other three was a resentment that Lily married a man that she originally despised in school?
JKR stated that things were touched upon in this movie, that were not in the books, and that were precursors for things to come. Could this be one of them?

mwiley - January 18, 2006 02:29 AM (GMT)
Well, if he really did like lily, and was actually jealous of James getting her instead of him, I don't think that would have been enough to separate them. I mean the marauders were really close.
afigirlafi - January 18, 2006 03:57 PM (GMT)
i know but didn't remus kept them
away form the warwolf secrect
or a while i know thya are close and all

IlovDanielRadcliffe - March 5, 2006 01:05 AM (GMT)
Actualy you make a lot of sense I never kinda thought of that before...I think when they were younger Lupin had a crush on her but thats it. And Lily might of had a little crush on Lupin but she obvisly loved James I mean why would she marrie him if she didn't it not like he forced her to marrie him...or at least I dont think...But know I think Lupin has given up Lily as a crush and moved on to keeping her as a friend! I'm a PROUD LUPIN & TONKS SHIPPER!! Pink Haired Wharwolve babies!!!
Shonk Da 'Onk - March 7, 2006 09:02 AM (GMT)

IlovDanielRadcliffe - March 19, 2006 12:31 AM (GMT)
 Do you think that Lupin got jealous at all when he found out that Lily & James had a thing for each other??? ^_^
ChaserG456 - May 13, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
Oh my gosh you people can't be serious! James always liked Lily Lupin would NOT like her anymore than a friend if he knew that. We all know Lupin! They were more like brother and sister in my opinion. And if you don't mind I would like to point out that nobody would be happy about someone died and Lupin didn't talk about either of them THAT much. Plus Lily and Lupin were too much alike it'd be so BORING! I like Lupin and Tonks but I will admit it surprised me.
Rayne Lupin - May 13, 2006 12:19 PM (GMT)
Personally I think they were like brother and sister in the END but prolly dated somewhere along the line. Basic thing is, Richela- you can't control wo you love.
Ginny_potter - May 13, 2006 05:52 PM (GMT)
I don't think they dated as James liked Lilly to much and everyone new that and i dont think Lupin would do that to one of his best mates. I just think he was mates with her or liked her because James did.
ChaserG456 - May 13, 2006 08:01 PM (GMT)
I agree with Emily! I mean I think Lily talked to Remus more that the rest of them cause they were both prefects or whatever so he knew her pretty well and would care about her in a brotherly way and even if he did like her James would have killed him is he went out with her.
Rayne Lupin - May 13, 2006 08:03 PM (GMT)
I mean I think that Lily would have asked him to a dance or something and him (maybe having just a BIT of a crush on her) accepted b/c he was too polite 2 turn it down. BTW, all these ideas in my head come from fanfiction. :D
Ginny_potter - May 13, 2006 08:06 PM (GMT)
you shouldn't use what fanfics say lol! Most of them are things which would never happen
Rayne Lupin - May 13, 2006 08:12 PM (GMT)
*eyes widening* But... but... you mean they LIED???!!! *bursts into tears*
hehehe. Nah. All joking aside, fanfics have REALLY good theories.

Well, judging by the way he acted in the pesieve I'd say he was sorta trying to steer clear of her and the whole scene.
Maybe he liked her when they were younger, and when he found out James liked her he decided not to tell anyone, backoff, give up, and just not interfeer. (sp?)

I think this is a very good theory. And I have anaylized this to a certain extent, I think by the time that James, Lupin and even Dumbledore had come to the conclusion that someone was on the inside, I think they were all looking at one another as being suspects, they knew there was a spy in their midst and they were not trusting anyone including their friends. In addition to a connection between Lily and Remus, I am also thinking there might be some connection between Snape and Lily as well. It makes me wonder if Snape and Lily had any kind of relationship, even though Snape had called Lily a foul word, Snape seemed to be particularly taken back when he found out just what Voldemort did to them especially to Lily, or at least that is what it seemed to me. I find that Lupin was kept out of the switch, but so was Dumbledore, he thought Black was the one who was the secret keeper also. So they were all keeping things from each other. But isn't that what Voldemort does afterall, spread discord and enminty and destroys from within.

I think that they all had crushes on Lily at one point or another! Snape probably had a small crush on her because she defended him. Now from what I know (since he was/is a Deatheater), Snape is a pureblood. Probably raised to despise Muggle-borns. So while he might have said something nasty to Lily, it was probably out of habit. It did almost look like he regretted it, the moment the words left his mouth. I'm sure Pettigrew had a crush on her. After all, she was smart & beautiful, and he would never have had a chance with any girl! I'm sure she would have nice to him, since he was one of the marauders. All of the marauders were in close contact with Lily once she and James became a couple. Makes sense for Lupin to have had a crush, based on his words and reactions about her. ( I have to say in James & Sirius's defense here though, that while Lupin said that Lily was there when no one else was, which implies that the marauders weren't there for him, they did all decide to become Animagus's so they could change with him and he wouldn't feel so alone with his curse!) I wouldn't be suprised if even Sirius had a crush on Lily at one time. Boys do seem to obsess over the girls that they have constant contact with. Bottom line though, with the exception of Pettigrew (who never had a chance!), Lupin & Sirius would never had betrayed James, whether he believed that or not. So as soon as they saw that he wanted Lily (even when she didn't want him...), they would have dropped any kind of pursuit for her. That's what best friends do, and that is what they were!

I think that all the marauders were close and were close to Lily too. Whenever the 1st war was on everyone against Voldemort became even more close to one another than before because of what they were up against. And during school just getting to know each other over the school year they become really close to each other so I don't know. Remember at first Lily couldn't stand James but then some time later they fell in love. Snape probably thought alot of Lily for standing up for him, but was afraid to share how he felt because of how nerdy he was, and how popular she was. Either that or it was just a mutual respect for one another. But then again what the Headmaster said in the very first post in this thread, it does sound like he did have a thing for her, but I don't think he ever let it known. I think he probably kept it to himself.

Just to be difficult... I'm going to argue the point that no, Lupin did not have a thing for Lilly. Dredging of course from both the books and the movies (because borrowing from movies alone on details makes me cringe) I'm going to say that Lupin rather considered Lilly like one would consider a particularly fond younger sister.
It's not unusual for a proud older sibling to, especially while remenissing on the dead, idealize the former person, puting them on a pedestal and conveiniantly forgetting ill traits. I agree with Dana, all of the Mauraders, and even Snape, had alot of respect for Lilly. But, Lupin also had respect for James and hi position, and I don't beleive even the thought of borrowing or harborring Prong's mate even in the depths of his mind would have occured to the werewolf.

No I don't think that Lupin ever had a thing for Lily. I think he probably loved her like a sister, but he wasn't in love with her.
(Unlike Snape *cough cough*)
