Tekken Movie Back On Track
By David Smith

Alongside the numerous bits of news lost in the hubbub of E3 last week, Hollywood trade paper Variety lately reports that a movie based on Namco's Tekken fighters is back on track. Dimension Films, the genre-focused division of Harvey Weinstein's Miramax production company, has agreed to distribute the project with an eye towards kicking off production late this summer.

Charles Stone, director of Drumline, will reportedly direct the film, drawing on a $40 million budget, much of which will go towards flashy computer-generated special effects. Mike Werb and Michael Colleary (the two collaborated on the story to the first Tomb Raider film, while the former wrote John Woo's Face/Off) are reportedly negotiating to write the script.

Tekken has traveled a roundabout road to the silver screen over the last few years. Japanese production company Gaga Communications has owned the film rights to the game series for some time (as well as Capcom's Onimusha series), but the project has bounced from one distributor to another. Two years ago, Crystal Sky was in negotiations with New Line Cinema to fund and distribute the movie, but those talks obviously didn't bear fruit.

One of Variety's articles ends on a rather odd note, stating that "Tekken 5 is in production and games rights-holder Namco is understood to be developing a new game based on the movie." That suggests the existence of a sixth Tekken title, or "vidgame" in Variety's preferred parlance.

Namco has obviously said nothing about any new games in the series other than the just-announced Tekken 5, and comments on such were unavailable this afternoon. If nothing else, we can amuse ourselves with visions of Jin, Hwoarang, and Heihachi rendered as blurry digitized B-movie-actor sprites until more details arise later this year.

Cool! I think they should get Christina Agulera to play Nina as both of them are HOT! Beyonce Nowls should be Christie and Ling Xio should be played by Lucy Lu. I wish there was a DOA movie! :D

I canŽt wait the DoA movie! Hope theyŽll make it good. Is anything more known about it?

In the Tekken movie they can use real actors, but NOT the ones master of Helena mentioned. Aguilera isnŽt an actress at all, and Lucy Liu is too old to play Xiaoyu.
One thing is sure, iŽll watch both movies when they come out.

bye,
