Title: The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3
Description: Not exactly nostalgia.

~I apologize if this isn't in the correct forum. It's not a movie, nor is it proper anime,
so this is where I thought it fit.~
I just barely remember The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. It was one
of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons when if first ran very early in the nineties.
You had many of the characters from the game, and unlike the gosh awful Super
Mario Bros. movie, The Adventures of SMB3 made an attempt to balance faithfulness
to the original game with developing plots for a children's TV series.
Recently, the series was released on DVD in the US. Remembering my days as a very
loyal Nintenkid, I grabbed one of the first copies. Actually pre-ordered it from Amazon.
When I've had a chance, I've been gradually watching episodes on me Xbox. (I love
the irony of watching a TV show based on a game that was made for the NES, on my
Xbox.)
It's strange. I know this series existed and I was a huge fan, but watching the first few
episodes hasn't been as much of a nostalgia ride as I'd hoped. I didn't really remember
the stories at all.
I remember only tiny slivers of a handful of episodes. It was almost like watching a
new series. I felt a bit let down.
Perhaps it's because my memory of details of the series is so faint.
Does anyone else remember it? Reruns count too, of course.

yup, watched them faithfully. the series was just another way at promoting the already popular SMB3 "fever" mostly. a friend of mine has it, so i'll be picking up a copy when i've the time.

only Super Mario Bros cartoon memory i have is when Luigi got squished and Mario had to use a POW to fix him
>.> and i kinda liked the movie. it has one of my favorite quites of all time in it

@l33t: I think most people didn't like the movie because is strayed so far from the
games. That's why I don't think I liked it.
I'm afraid I don't remember the episode where Luigi was flattened. It may be one of
the other Mario-based shows.
@blueboy: Nintendo were marketing geniuses at the time. I'm sure you remember, In the late 80's and early 90's, they were everywhere. I remember the SMB3 fruit
snacks. I ate them primarily because the box art looked almost just like the front
cover of the game's box.
They also had Super Mario Bros. Dixie Cups AND branded dispenser. I used to have
the dispenser, but I can't find it now. I guess it's long gone. :( The only thing that
I remember identifying it as Super Mario Bros. themed was the label, which
eventually washed off. I doubt it'd be worth anything to anyone but me.
A couple of things I didn't like about the set.
One of the episodes on Disc 1 had a small "hole" in it, no video (and I think no audio)
for a second or two. I'm hearing that the masters used were damaged in places, and
that the missing video may be gone for good, I don't know.
The other thing was that most, if not all of the licensed music was cut and replaced
with what's been described as "generic background music".
To be fair, the music was likely cut out of rebroadcasts long before the DVD's
due to copyright/licensing issues (read: costs too much.)
Since I don't really remember the series, the replaced music isn't really a serious
matter most of the time, even though they seem to use the exact same "replacement
music" every time.
IMPORTANT: Potential spoilers ahead. I realize that in the context of a nearly
20-year old TV series, spoilers may or may not be as important. However, as I
understand it's good forum etiquette to warn of spoilers before hand, I have done so.

One place it does matter is "Kootie Pie Rocks". The whole episode was structured
around the then pop-phenom Milli Vanilli. I've heard what happened with the group
and the lip-synching. I can understand why the original music was removed, but it
leaves "Kootie Pie Rocks" in a bit of a mess.
The replacement music creates a funny irony. Early in the episode, Mario, the
Princess and crew travel to New York to see a Milli Vanilli concert, because she's
(of course) their biggest fan. [No word on how "their" music reached the Mushroom
Kingdom.] Originally, the song performed was "Blame It On The Rain". However
this was removed and replaced with vocaless background music.
The upshot of this is that since the cartoon version of Milli Vanilli was drawn singing
a missing song, it results in them now lip-synched with nothing. Even some of the
comments from the Princess in the crowd and a comment by King Koopa-he followed
them to the concert-playing on the song's lyrics is missing.
I also didn't like the fact they called the special feature "The Writer's Bible". I know
the term "bible" is used in contexts outside the Word of God, but I still don't like it.

could have been from the other Mario cartoons. i mean, i did watch alot of cartoons and there was more than one Mario cartoon.
me and movies are simple. good story, an explosion here or there, at least one fight scene, and a pop culture reference. then, LNT will be happy.
wow, i am simple....

i enjoyed the movie also. there were few at the time of "mario fever", so it worked out....unlike these days where every corner you turn there's something getting a movie adaptation of.

um. i only vaguely remember the SMB3 show -- there was one episode where princess toadstool went on a vacation i think, and then the castle was taken over by king koopa and she came back by surfing through the castle window -- or maybe it was the wall? -- i don't know. i just remember she surfed into the throne room.
iirc, the SMB3 show wasn't the same one as the show that alternated between live-action clips of mario and luigi as plumbers in brooklyn, right? that's my favorite one, for the lol factor.
