distilled only spreads the dirt & germs on your disc. what you'll want are some of the following:
disc fluid spray (windex or alcohol also possible yet may not be reccomended)
microfiber cloth/durable cleaning cloth
disc buffer (possibly)
be sure when cleaning to wipe from "inner to outer circle", as a "circular" notion could damage your disc even further (disc cleaners are the only exception to this rule).
for scratches, use a "buffer", it's the only way to rid of scratches.

I would strongly recommend not using one of the 20 dollar "Disc Cleaning" or "Scratch Removal" devices. I've used them before, and they only succeed in wasting money and causing more damage. For cleaning dirt or such off discs, I think it's usually better not to use any types of cleaning substances. I can usually use regular faucet water and a cloth used for cleaning my glasses, that works well.
If the disc is scratched, call the local gaming stores. Some stores(not chains like EB games or Software Etc.) have machines which resurface the disc. This machine takes about 2-3 minutes, and makes the $20 devices look like what they are, junk. This can be done many times without causing damage to the disc, and it seems to repair the disc to near-mint shape(ignore the very slight scratches it causes, they do not affect the game). I've done this about 3 or 4 times, and each game now plays like new.
Also, as long as the disc is not severely scratched or the scratches are deep, you can buy a solution at EB games which fills in small scratches. This worked wonderfully on my Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.
Now, if only there were a way to fix cracks. I can't believe my DoA4 is cracked. Anyone have a spare copy? Lol.

Someone said that boiling the disks would help. But I think that's crazy.
Like Victorthebattousai said, it's best if you call the local gaming stoes. :)

BOILING?! Are you mad? All it would take is to make it a little too hot, and boom, no more disc(at least, no more disc that can fit into your system). Also, if you boil it, the label would come off.

Someone said it on another forum, and that forum doesn't seem to be working right now. But when it does, I'll get more details about boiling it for you.
I wouldn't recommend boiling though. I just heard it helps.

Hot breath, T-Shirt, Wipe, repeat.

Be careful of the shirt you use, some materials will scratch the disc easily.

i think they meant the "steam" from boiling hot water would help clean the disc. never heard of it. there's also "home remedies" that work on discs also. i've used one and it works for certain.
as for the solution cleaning, debat and/or try what you think works. i don't go by what most folks suggest (even gamestores) unless i've done it myself. try these techniques on an old disc that you won't worry over if you accidentally damage it bsu.

Lol, someone told me licking your discs helps lol, because the spit fills in the scratches hahaha. I don't even know if it works, but it's hilarious.
Anyway, the only real sure-fire way to do it is to take it to a shop and have it resurfaced. If the game breaks or something while being resurfaced, you can always blame them lol.
