Title: All the same?
bsu - April 16, 2007 04:39 AM (GMT)
It's healthy to have some controversial conversation once in a while. Maybe you guys can convince me that debating doesn't always end up in hate and fighting.
There are two parts to this. It's sort of long.
I'm curious. Is it really that hard to differentiate between Chinese, Japanese and Korean culture?
Lately I've been looking at Sims that people have created and I see a lot like to make Asian-themed families. Fantastic, you like to be diverse. Now how about doing your research and getting it right? Your Sim wears a Japanese Kimono, Japanese-style make-up with Korean hair and shoes. In their Sim description it's labeled as JAPANESE MODEL or COMBO ASIAN (lol!), because they see anything Asian as just one. I had mixed feelings about it. I'm glad they think it's beautiful but at same time, we are different people and different cultures. If they took the time to research it, they would see the differences and properly create their Sim as such. If I were to create a Sim from France I would do research before finding/creating material. If I were to take a traditional Italian outfit and stick it on my French Sim and call her all-French, they have every right to be angry. It was ignorant and generalizes Europeans as all the same. Minus the heavy bias among cultural websites, there is solid information. So again I ask question, is it really hard to see a difference? You can be super honest. Tell me about the traditional clothing, behavior, language or common myths.
Onto part two. Meeting someone is a different thing. When I'm mistaken for say a Japanese man, I won't fret. All you have to do is ask. We are similar in appearance so it's hard to guess. We are guilty of doing the exact same thing too. I see no difference in appearance between a man from Germany and a man from Poland. I see no physical difference in Hispanic, Indian or African ethnic groups either. I'd have to ask them to find out. So my question is to people here who rage from identity confusion. Why do you get mad?
There is more I have to say but I'll wait on discussion first.

Oh, bsu. You with your want to incite controversy!
Being cultured is being intellectually astute- and thus, in being so, one has a natural desire to find accuracy before acting.
My only answer is... the majority of the world isn't this way. There isn't much we can do. Or rather, if there is, someone needs to discover it.

I'll read your post now, bsu. haha I actually think on this whole topic a lot.

Double post for modship.
It's actually rampant everywhere, believe it or not. The general media doesn't show anything but typical stereotypes; that's what the public's trained to see. It annoys me to no end to see a bunch of Asian countries and ethnicities blended in out of ignorance. Haha, like people see Pump It Up and say this like "All the songs are in Chinese/Japanese!" (When it's states all around the machine that it's Korean). Or when people refer to an Asian language, it's ALWAYS Chinese, and it's always derived of funny noises and such.
It's maddening, because it makes that target really bad, and the general public is trained to treat all types of those people who so much as look that way the same. I've had some bizarre things said/done to me at my job. A kid greeted me with "Wassup, dawg?" and asked me if we had grills for sale. A girl at this restaurant my friends and I went to told us she has a friend that is into "brothas." Another guy at Dave and Buster's said he was honored to have gotten a cool hand shake and dap(lol) from me, and said it's nothing wrong with talking with his brotha from anotha motha.
It can be funny(and hell, sometimes even endearing when people have good intentions...though that doesn't last for too long), but it gets old. There's nothing you can really do about it, though. :(

You mean we're both so qute/sexy/awesome? Oh thanks Mills!
So... there's not much argument here but you both are right. There is nothing to do about it. I guess this is more like a ranting thread then.
blueboy - April 16, 2007 08:32 PM (GMT)
ranting, it's good for the mind and soul. i'll be brief on this one. it's understandable for any of us to have mixed feelings on this. like mills commented, i usually get the same thing as he. mostly if not all the time i laugh at it because it's funny. i'm not bothered by these comments.....as most folks just assume it's the thing to say.
society's trained to be stereotypical in all cultures. "why?" is simple, we're just ignorant (not you guys :)) in general of everything in some form or fashion.

some people actually thought i was Samoan because of my complexion and looks (although, a Samoan LNT sounds cool). but mills is right, the the vast majority of the people don't know. the media isn't always there to help educate. for every race you have, there is a misconception; this is a fact of life.
a good example is Azreal (from OP9, who moved to Rudius Media), whom states that he has race problems a lot in japan. in one post, it was about how sometimes people call him Bob Sapp and Bobby Ologun (K-1 Japan Grand Prix fighters. they are big black guys in japan) and how it annoys him.
http://www.gaijinsmash.net/archives/bobby.phtmland yes, there are people who over react. you cant blame them a lot because its like someone poking you. they will poke and poke until you crack and lose it. and the only way to prevent this is to educate people, but that will never happen. (i been saying this for many years before House) this brings me to my House-like quip: Society, in general, is stupid.
and if people thing my last statement is too harsh, just look throughout history at what people do in groups.
bsu - April 17, 2007 04:10 AM (GMT)
So did it make you mad? It doesn't sound like it.
I wasn't surprised about Azrael's story. Japan is among one of the most homogeneous countries in the world. I like how he told the one kid he looked like Ichiro xD Haha!

yea, he states that japan has those problems. especially when thier media isnt... good. >.>
no, it didnt make me mad, but laugh a little. it doesnt take alot to make me mad actually. you have to blatantly racist, nag me a lot to the very point of someone losing thier sanity, or insulting my family.
other than that, its like no skin off my nose
bsu - April 17, 2007 05:08 AM (GMT)
Well, most homogeneous countries do.
Oh, I thought you weren't clear of my question.
