Title: Favorite video game genre

Hitomi - February 14, 2007 03:54 PM (GMT)
Although DOA is my favorite game, I like horror games best in general. Action and adventure games are tied in a close second.

fighting! whohoooo!

blueboy - February 14, 2007 05:18 PM (GMT)
although not placed here, i'm going with "other". with the exception of sports and war-related(must have elements of "fantasy" otherwise), i play and own a bit from every genre, which makes it hard for me to pick a top favorite.

i like them all equally.

I like fighting best, because in my opinion I love playing it with friends and family.

I also like action, adventure, horror and some sports games. :)

same here. i used to be a lot more selective in terms of what genres i would play, but nowadays i've just begun to pick up the best representatives of a given genre. i find it's more rewarding to play, say, a great shooter despite it not being my 'favorite' genre, as opposed to a mediocre rpg or fighter.

alos where is the music/rhythm games choice?! D:<

what, no one voted for action?

Of course, a good game is a good game, regardless of genre. I was just wondering what people generally liked. Generally, I don't really like shooters. But I loved Panzer Dragoon Orta.

second this notion. PDO was the 5hit. have you tried old school shooters?

Pixel - February 15, 2007 03:16 AM (GMT)
There's a genre missing....

What about Platformer[s] (Mario, etc)?

well, there are lots of gamers who find whole genres boring and even the best games within it aren't going to be enjoyable for a lot of people. like, Gears of War is a great FPS but i'm sure there are people here who wouldn't find it very fun simply it's a FPS. 'favorite genre' tends to imply that there is one genre where one is willing to accept less polished games within that genre, while a 'least favorite' genre game may not be enjoyable to you no matter how well it's made.

i guess the point i'm trying to make is that for me, i can't choose a favored genre any more because i've pretty much stopped buying games based on what genre they fall into and now choose them based on reviews and friend's recommendations.

@janejana:
preach on, preach on

@pixel:
good find. sometimes the industry pops them under adventure.

Pixel - February 15, 2007 05:48 AM (GMT)
I'm going to say "Platformer". To me personally "Adventure" is like Zelda. Somewhere
between true Platformer and true RPG (that is, compared to the titles that would have
been considered RPG's through the middle 90s anyway.)

My first video game was Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt. and I liked SMB better.

I do have a fairly broad taste though. I like Racing too, especially Kart racing,
sports, and the occasional Puzzle.

I'm a little different about fighting games. I'm not really cool on blood and gore. (One
plus for the DOA series IMO is there's not really any gore.) I have Killer Instinct Gold
but I don't like it as well as I do DOA.

Then there are the fighting systems. I have a lot of trouble with combos, and counter
holds in particular.

The only thing about DOA is the computer opponent AI. It goes from nearly letting
you win in early levels to just mowing you down several times in a row later own.

I voted action, but I agree with janejana and blueboy. I'm not really biased towards any particular genre. The only genre I don't enjoy is MMORPG.

Queen Helena - February 21, 2007 04:54 PM (GMT)
Action/Adventure
Fighting games
RolePlayingGames

I can also really enjoy a good horror game every now and then.

Xion - February 21, 2007 05:00 PM (GMT)

or even Shooter..War should be replaced with Shooter and RPG should be up there..but its too late for that..
