Of the 17 planned nation-wide movie releases, six are either adapted or remade. Of those six, HALF of them are all out re-made. Don't even get me started on the limited releases, which include an adaptation of Lassie. I'm not kidding, Lassie will once again be unleashed on us September the first in limited theaters.
Along with re-makes, there seem to be a few genres dominating the wide releases currently -- sports, drama, action/adventure, suspense/horror, and thriller. I won't even address thriller, as people seem to want to stick "thriller" onto any movie they come by nowadays...
- 8 out of 17 of the wide releases of September are drama. We can round that up to half of the wide releases as 8.5 is half of 17.
- 3 of the 17 are sports
- 5 of the 17 are action/adventure
- 2 of the 17 are suspense/horror (50% of suspense/horror is re-make for Sept.)
- 4 of the 17 are thriller
It's not that I don't like sports movies or anything...but just Friday, another football movie was released and within the next two weeks, a basketball movie is going to release. A couple of weeks after that, ANOTHER football movie (starring The Rock -- will he take his shirt off!?! Let's find out!) will release. I'm afraid to look in the past few months, because I KNOW I remember at least one coming out.
Ah, drama. Everybody loves drama...they especially love to write and re-write it too apparently. First, there's Crossover, the sports/drama that we love to mix released on the 1st. That next Friday, Hollywoodland and Sherrybaby (limited) are released. We're only on the eigth of September, and ONE THIRD of the wide releases set to be out by then are drama. All the drama continues the NEXT Friday with another drama/sports movie (Gridiron Gang), The Black Dahlia, and the Last Kiss (remake). That makes five wide releases of drama in 16 days, just BARELY over two weeks.
Who doesn't like action/adventure? I know I do...excuse me for enjoying a little death and destruction (or maybe a cute kiddy movie) once in a while. Crank is the one I'm really looking forward to seeing and it combines that "comedy" in there that everyone claims to force in there somehow as well...not to mention, STUFF BLOWS UP! Does that not pwn? And the next week, I get to see my favorite Tony Jaa in The Protector, where I can see MORE people smacking other people...I love you martial arts. And the Friday after that, things soften up a bit with a cute kiddy movie, Everyone's Hero. The next week, MORE MARTIAL ARTS! Go Jet Li! (I must say however that the last movie was a disappointment...)
Ah yes, suspense/horror...everybody likes to claim that title and disappoint you with mere suspense (sometimes even pseudo-suspense) when you get to the theater. Alas, I will name two claimed suspense/horror movies...The Wickerman (re-make) and The Covenant...need I go beyond a re-make that I can rent or buy and a movie about teens with powers?
I said I wouldn't address thriller earlier and I'm gonna stick to that...right after I point out that two of these said thrillers are The Wickerman and The Covenant >.>
I ain't sayin' the movie line up is bad or anything, I just like to write little articles like this in my boredom >.<
more original movies >.> or more kung-fu movies.............. i perfer the latter
this is a pretty common occurance -- studios tend release certain types of films at specific times of the year, as tradition and supposedly market data dictate that certain genres perform better when released at those times. the most obvious example is the summer action/adventure blockbuster; fall is usually reserved for heavier 'award-winning' fare, especially since the biggest audience for action-oriented films is back in school/college.
incidentally, the end of august is basically a crapfilm fest -- most studios release their low-budget, terrible-concept movies around now.
remaking in Hollywood has gotten insane in the past few years. i don't mind book-to-movie adaptations so much, but rehashing not-so-old films is like, the pinnacle of laziness. :0
