Now hhow can I rewmber the planets??

My Very Exited Mother Just Sat Upon Nine ??? NINE WHAT?!!!!!!! nine what!!!!!!

Shadow_Wolf - August 26, 2006 12:27 AM (GMT)
So Pluto is no longer considered a planet anymore? >_> Poor Pluto :pinch:

bsu - August 26, 2006 12:30 AM (GMT)
Hahahaha I read about this.

Stupid racistz...

Lostelei - August 26, 2006 12:31 AM (GMT)
Who cares. It's just a matter of definition.
And because of that every book concerning planets has to be rewritten.
good job.

I doubt their concerns where the text books when they made this annoucment. Just cross it out, done and simple.

uhm, but there are three new ones too!? XD

Planets, i find that unlikely. Any planet past Pluto obviously has to fall on the Kuiper belt which does not fall t the regulations as a planet.

Lostelei - August 26, 2006 12:42 AM (GMT)
... whoa.
I don't have a ENGLISH source for that now, but with the new definition of what a planet is we HAVE 3 new planets.

Dan - August 26, 2006 01:04 AM (GMT)
Well if tyhats the case then how come i havnt read it anywhere?

you are correct. 313 US 3000, aka 'xena,' ceres, and i forgot the other are in the polls for new planets. but im stupid and wikipedia is smart, so here is the wiki

The 2006 redefinition of "planet" by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) states that a planet is a body that has "cleared the neighbourhood" around its orbit. A full definition may be found below.

Since the discovery of Pluto in 1930, the solar system has been considered to contain nine planets, and assorted other bodies. The discovery over recent years that there are at least three (Quaoar, Sedna and 2003 UB313), and probably more, bodies which orbit the sun in a planet-like manner and which are comparable to Pluto in size, led to a situation whereby either additional minor bodies might regularly need to be added to the list of officially recognized planets, or older ones would need to be removed, in order to ensure consistency of definition, as well as concerns over future discoveries of planet-like objects in other stellar systems. In 2006, the matter came to a head with the need to categorize and name the recently-discovered trans-plutonic object 2003 UB313.

Debate within the IAU led to suggested proposals to redefine the term "planet" so as to include other objects beyond the traditional nine planets which have historically been considered part of the solar system.[1] The proposal is denoted as Resolutions 5A, 5B, 6A and 6B for GA-XXVI. Members of the IAU voted on the proposal on August 24, 2006 in Prague, Czech Republic, with the result of the vote reclassifying Pluto from a planet to a dwarf planet.[2] Of course, the IAU decision does not change Pluto's physical characteristics; Pluto has been small, distant, eccentric in orbit, and in close quarters with other spacial bodies throughout human history.

In its original form the redefinition would have recognized three new planets: Ceres, Charon, and 2003 UB313. It was presumed that, after more observation and discussion, astronomers would accept more objects in the solar system as meeting the new definition.

On August 22 the original redefinition (which recognized twelve solar system planets, including Pluto) was dealt fatal blows in two open IAU meetings. Jay Pasachoff of Williams College, who attended both meetings, was quoted as saying, "I think that today can go down as 'the day we lost Pluto' ".[3]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_redefinition_of_planet

note that Ceres is an asteroid, in the asteroid belt. that would make it this:
M V E M C J U N C P? 2003 or X P? = Pluto cause pluto and Charon could become a double planet.

Dan - August 26, 2006 01:09 AM (GMT)
I just read my newspaper, and yeah it would class 3 new planets to our solar system.

Double planet or not its not a planet due to the new rule!

you know, this stuff has been going on since 2002/2003. im serious! i been keeping track of pluto [LNT likes stars and planets >.>] and in '03, pluto was demoted to comet. then in '04 or '05, this planet definitions started up a little after the discovery of Xena.

definition draft of a planet thingie
The final definition, as passed on 24 August 2006, is:

2006 redefinition of planet
The IAU...resolves that planets and other bodies in our Solar System be defined into three distinct categories in the following way:

(1) A "planet" [1] is a celestial body that: (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and © has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.
(2) A "dwarf planet" is a celestial body that: (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape [2], © has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.
(3) All other objects [3] except satellites orbiting the Sun shall be referred to collectively as "Small Solar System Bodies".

Footnotes:
[1] The eight planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
[2] An IAU process will be established to assign borderline objects into either "dwarf planet" and other categories.
[3] These currently include most of the Solar System asteroids, most Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs), comets, and other small bodies.

The IAU further resolves:
Pluto is a "dwarf planet" by the above definition and is recognized as the prototype of a new category of trans-Neptunian objects.

A double planet is an informal term used to describe two planets that orbit each other about a common center of mass that is not located within the interior of either planet. The formal term is "binary system". The term "double planet" has also been used to refer more generally to two interacting planets or dwarf planets of comparable mass. There are also double asteroids (or double minor planets), such as 90 Antiope.

i been advertising wikipedia for so long and yet... i still gotta show it off >.>

the new rules kill off the double planet thing. Rule 2d states it cant be a satellite. and we all know Ch dont get cable

actually, Ceres is a huge asteroid. its located in the asteroid belt. but with these new planet rules, it can now be called a dwarf planet

No, there was no Sailor Earth (that we knew of...)
Which is why when I was learning the planets I sang the theme song and slipped "Moon" after Venus...she was my sub for Earth >.<

I bet if they DO come up with it, when they bring Pluto back, she'll have her shins blown off so she'll be a dwarf instead of a long legged green haired lady with a staff taller than she was before...
