Title: DOA Kunoichi goes IRC!
Description: and hopefully you too. =D

Lostelei - November 26, 2005 11:24 AM (GMT)
I've set up an IRC-Channel for DOA Kunoichi, which is placed on delinked.us and named #DOA-Kunoichi - which may not be really informative for many users here.
Let me explain.

What is IRC?
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a free communication service, running on countless servers over the Internet. The special thing about IRC is, that it's not bound to a specific software or anything. There are many different clients which you can use to access IRC and even web-based ones for those who do not want to install a client for IRC.
Maybe even your browser has an IRC client built-in, which you can find out immediately by using this link (which will take you directly into the channel). This will be the case if you're using Mozilla or Opera as your browser.

How do I get on IRC?
I recommend getting mIRC from mIRC.com.
mIRC is the most popular and one of the most user-friendly clients around and I'm using it myself too.
Apart from mIRC there are other clients like X-chat or bersIRC and actually more than I could ever list here.
If you have a client installed connect to the delinked.us server and when connected join the #DOA-Kunoichi channel, or - again - use the direct link.

For those who are completely new to IRC, here a step by step instruction how to get into the channel using mIRC:
- download mIRC from mIRC.com. [direct link to english version: *click*]
- install.
- use the irc://irc.delinked.us/DOA-Kunoichi link in your browser, mIRC will start up and ask you if you want to connect, which you want, of course - just press OK.
- you should be in now. just change your nick by typing "/nick {desired nick}" without the quotes and you're ready for hours of chatting!

Why did you choose the Delinked server?
Actually for no special reason. I was looking for a server that was sounding cool and had ChanServ and NickServ services running on it. ChanServ ensures that nobody fools around with the operator ("OP", admin) rights of the channel and NickServ preserves your nicks, so nobody can fake you after you registered your nick.

What commands are important?
Except for the first command these are more advanced features of IRC, you do not need to know at first.
CODE
/nick {your nick}

changes your displayed nickname. There are two restrictions to that: first, the nick has to be unique on that server. If you try to call yourself some common nick like "Kasumi", it probably will be occupied by someone else, or at least registered. the second thing is, that your nick only may be 30 characters long and may not contain spaces (use underscores "_").
for example "/nick Lostelei" will change your nick to Lostelei, which will lead to a password request by NickServ, cause I've registered it. =0
CODE
/msg {user} {text}

sends a private message to a user. it can't be read by anyone but the user you are addressing.
for example "/msg Lostelei TOP-SECRET STUFF OMG WTF LOLZ" will send a message to me, containing ... top-secret stuff!
CODE
/msg nickserv register {password} {email}

registers the nick you are using at that time with your password and will prevent others from using your nick.
CODE
/msg nickserv identify {password}

will identify you to NickServ as the owner of that nickname. You have to do this once, when connecting to the server or changing your nick to the protected one. If you do not within a minute or so, NickServ will rename you.
CODE
/part {#channel}

is used to leave a channel. "/part #DOA-Kunoichi" would make you leave our channel, which you don't have to remember, because you don't want to leave the channel!
CODE
/join {#channel}

is used to enter a channel. "/join #DOA-Kunoichi" is what you want to type, when you're connected to the server but have not joined the channel yet.
CODE
/quit {message}

aborts the connection to the server and displays a message to all other users, in which you can either put reason why you're leaving, some really COOL text or complete nonsense.
"/quit have to destroy brain cells on a party!" for example will... well, you know what it will do.

Anything else I need to know?
Well, yeah. You can't join the channel flooding everything with complete nonsense or flame everyone, cause me and the board admins will be able to kick you out. behave!

Why I exactly should I get my lazy virtual body into IRC? That's not comfortable!
Because IRC is the chat system that PAWNS - YOU - ALL. period.
It's simple enough to get into it pretty quickly and yet complex enough to offer features you wouldn't even think of!
And you don't really know the Internet if you don't know IRC! or so.
Having an IRC client will definitely come handy at some point, 'cause almost every website, that is worth mentioning runs an IRC channel.

More information about IRC!!
Read up on it, here for example. =)

The direct link of our IRC is not working.

Luminous_Daybreak - November 26, 2005 07:20 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it doesn't work, but if you connect to delinked "random server" and then input #DOA-Kunoichi for joining a channel, it should work.

Lostelei - November 26, 2005 07:30 PM (GMT)
oh, the board forces a http:// into the links. =(
but it's irc:// not http://
just copy that line:
irc://irc.delinked.us/DOA-Kunoichi
into your browser and it should work, IF there's IRC software available on your system.

there are some irc clients that are embeded in a webpage. most of the ones i used to use are unavailible as of now, but i'll look around for one if there are people who want to test out irc before picking up a client like mIRC.

Lostelei - November 26, 2005 07:39 PM (GMT)
I was looking for a web-based IRC client too, for linking here, but I didn't find anything useful. =(

janejana - November 26, 2005 07:58 PM (GMT)
for those who are having troubles with mIRC, there is a web-based client that you can use to access the chat room:

http://irc.midnight.hu/irc.cgi

in the boxes you'll need to put in this info:

nickname: your user name
channel: DOA-Kunoichi
server: irc.delinked.us

and you're done!

i'm thinking maybe the different time zones may have something to do with people not joining :(

maybe if we had something like, a scheduled beginner chat or something...? idk.

i do know that most times i'm availble, most others aren't. :(

Mills McDougle - December 5, 2005 04:11 AM (GMT)

I Love Ein - January 15, 2006 08:19 PM (GMT)
Nothing's working for me...and I wanna join

Dan - January 15, 2006 10:23 PM (GMT)
How do you install Virc?

Luminous_Daybreak - January 15, 2006 10:34 PM (GMT)
You DL it then install it by double clicking on the setup icon for it downloaded to wherever you downloaded to.

Lostelei - January 25, 2006 08:41 AM (GMT)
I don't like telling you, but most of you guys really FAIL at IRC usage. XD
Most of you come online for about a minute to see if anyone's there and disappear again. Can you imagine how little the chance is to be online at the same time if everyone does that? XD
Many times you guys even missed each other just by a single freakin' minute!
You're really too impatient.
