Tecmo president slams Sony's PlayStation 3 plans Rob Fahey 15:28 22/11/2004 Nakamura predicts Xbox 2 success, accuses Sony of losing focus on videogames
Junji Nakamura, president of Japanese publisher Tecmo, has slammed Sony's plans for the PlayStation 3, accusing the firm of allowing its ambitions in the home appliance space to overshadow its commitment to games.
Speaking to investors at a conference held by the firm to mark its half-yearly results, Nakamura-san also expressed his confidence in Microsoft's ability to build on its experience with Xbox and succeed in the next generation.
"There's not much information from Sony," he told a questioner who asked about the firm's progress on next-generation development, according to a report on Bloomberg Japan. "The situation with Microsoft is very different."
Speaking directly about PlayStation 3, he said that "the CPU was developed for a next-generation game machine, but the hardware is conceived by an appliance manufacturer... I feel that they're probably trying to use games as a way to increase their power in the home appliance industry."
Nakamura-san was critical of this approach to designing the console, arguing that Sony was allowing design considerations related to the home appliance market to interfere with its efforts at building a games system.
Speaking about Microsoft, however, Nakamura-san opined that the American giant would "be able to use their experience of the current machine's failure to succeed, even in this country."
Uniquely among Japanese publishers, Tecmo has long been a staunch supporter of Microsoft's efforts in the console market, moving the lucrative Dead or Alive franchise (and spin-off Ninja Gaiden) exclusively to the Xbox and creating the only truly successful titles for the console in Japan in the process.
However, the company has also continued to release a significant proportion of its output on the PlayStation 2, and in the past senior executives at the company have avoided such outspoken comments about console rivals Sony and Microsoft.

Ha, I knew Sony would get it back at them someday!

For the most part, what he says is true. But underestimating Sony is a bad idea.
JWBB - November 23, 2004 01:42 PM (GMT)
True, but I don't think Sony will match Microsoft in the near future.

Maybe. Maybe not. Realize that Sony has more experience in this field than Microsoft. I'm not particularly rooting for any side; I know that they'll both deliver.

Listen, I love Xbox and all, but compared to Playstation 2, Xbox is nothing special. I like Tecmo for some of its games, but their attitude is waaaaaayyyyy off. Sony has been beating Microsoft in the Console race for....well, as long as Xbox has been out. Ps2 may not have the graphics, but it has far more great games. Xbox rocks, what with Halo, DoA, and others, but Sony has cornered the market on console games.

Popping out of nowhere Victor? Hehe, wb!
I personally think PS3 is gonna be the leading console, Sony always has been after all.
Victorthebattousai - November 24, 2004 02:15 AM (GMT)
Haha! You're the first person to notice! Thanks! Kind of nice to be recognized lol. I would say the same, Ps3 will be the leader. Ps2 has more going for it than Xbox, a lot of it being Ps2's backwards compatability. I mean, with just the Ps2 games, Ps2 has twice that of Xbox, and with Ps1 games, it has like.....at least 6 times as many as Xbox. I love Xbox, but it definately needs more topnotch games to beat Ps2.It needs games like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, stuff like that. Still, the Xbox is worth having, and I would advise anyone to buy one. Just not mine. It's messed up. It plays DVDs and CDs, but no games. Not even my brand new Halo 2. My luck. Wait two years, get the game, play it for a week, and then lose the Xbox. URGH!!!!!!

That sucks, mine broke due to "over use"......
by that I mean playing DynastyWarriors3. That game involved massive amount of units and caused alot of slow downs (but I heard DW4 is fixed) I had the 1.0 XBox (intial release) and sold it after for $100. Poo.
btw guys check out this:

The only games that I like that Tecmo made is DOA and some other titles. Without Team Ninja Tecmo ain't nothing. I just hope the PS3 won't be another Dreamcast knockout.
I'll agree with what Illmills said. I'm not rooting for either side. All I care about is the games and their fun that they deliver. The game companies that make the games should take the credit and not the Console Makers. Because the Real people make the games not the consoles. And I rely on them to make a great game.

In the console market, Tecmo is a GAME developer....not a CONSOLE manufacture. Knocking on a company such as SONY is already a bad move for one. If Tecmo ever ran into problems with Microsoft, who's to say the company won't move back to SONY for mass production of their titles.
Just because you've the technical production power doesn't make you God.
True, The Dead or Alive series is what saved Tecmo from going down, but does anyone remember the titles Tecmo Bowl and Rygar?
Also great games in its time. Tecmo needs to count its blessings rather than boasting about how great they are......
Debates such as these often leads to company buy-outs......
wirbelwind - November 25, 2004 05:29 PM (GMT)
I've always suspected that Tecmo attitude really is terrible. This has confirmed it. Sure they're good, but running your mouth aint gonna make u too many friends, no matter where.
No_Doubt - November 27, 2004 02:14 AM (GMT)
I don't care about Microsoft or Sony. I want Sega to start making consoles again (although that will never happen)!
Otherwise, I'm rooting for the underdog.
GO NINTENDO!
AshCrimson - November 27, 2004 03:17 AM (GMT)
hmmm its always been this way.....
16bit era: Nintendo runs over the dominating Genesis
32bit era: Sony made its presence felt to Nintendo...
Current era.... close fight..
future gen... well do we have to make a wild guess :p
P.S. hello to the old timers here..... its been a long time hahaha...... the long wait has finally ended..... DOAU is here wooooohoooo :kasumi:

noooooooooo tecmo what have u done?! what happens is ms doesnt do god in the next generation console and tecmo needs another platform? truthfully if it wasnt for team ninja tecmo would be non existant and i dont think tecmo has the authority 2 bash other consoles when they make games.
