Ballad Queen Lee Soo Young was announced as the winner of the prestigious Daesang the top award at the 2003 MBC Awards on December 31, 2003. Fellow female gasoo and friend Hyori who was poised to win a Daesang for the third straight night was there to congratulate a sobbing Lee Soo Young. She was picked out of the night's 10 Bonsang recipients. They were Sung Shi Kyung, Koyote, Jo Sung Mo, Boa, NRG, Lee Soo Young, Big Mama, Wheesung, Lee Hyori and Bi. Seven was selected as the year's best new male artist while a second YGer Lexy was announced as the best new female artist.

In review Hyori won 3 of the 5 end of the year Daesangs (Seoul Gayo, SBS and KBS). Jo Sung Mo won the Daesang at the Golden Disk Awards while Lee Soo Young won the final Daesang minutes after the start of the New Year. Lee Soo Young who was uncontrollably in tears thanked her parents after accepting the award. Her father passed away when she was in elementary school and her mother when she was in high school both due to tragic car crashes.

Sale numbers for her 5th album which was released in August with title song "Alone" and which totaled more than 400,000 helped her edge Hyori for her first Daesang. Lee Soo Young will release a special 5.5 album on January 9 before embarking on tour in Japan.
