Title: musicians you've recently heard for the first time

John Updike - October 29, 2008 01:45 AM (GMT)
post itt some musicians you've recently heard for the first time and really enjoyed, or heard long ago and mostly ignored but recently listened to again and "rediscovered" as awesomeness

this can mainly be a youtube links because what with the internet these days you can basically see a live performance of any song from the last 10 years whenever you want on youtube

James Blackshaw: "Cloud of Unknowing"
Had this on my computer for a long time, but started listening to it again looking for some relaxing music, and it is teh awesome. Really fast fingerpicking guitar, somewhat like John Fahey but with more of an abstract or modern feeling to it, while still retaining the very authentic sound of a fingerpicking.

Marnie Stern: "Transformer"
Recently went to see this woman perform live because my friend from out of town came to visit to see her, and it was free, so I said why not. Kind of related to the previous one, but way more rock elements, especially some influence of 80's shredding in the guitar playing. The guitar playing is by far the best part, her voice is grating at times, but she's pretty hawt as well.

I just bought a keyboard that came with songs programmed onto it that you can learn, mostly classical and traditional pieces, but one particular jazzy tune on there that really brought me back to when I heard it last which was probably when I wassa kid, didn't know who wrote it or what it was called, but NOW I do. The Entertainer I'm not 100% if it's the original recording by S. Joplin, but it sounds pure.

Though I never ignored the metal mindings of Iron Maiden, I was never the fan of their music as I am now, after rediscovering them about a month ago. I can't believe how long I overlooked their epicness. I blame it on a matter of taste, the shrilling tones of Dickinsons voice take time to appreciate, but I really do enjoy his vocals now, the conviction in them, the madness he can portray. One of my favorites

Hallowed Be Thy Name

Not long after getting into Maiden, I discovered for the first time, King Diamond. Wow! Talk about your "grating" voices, it really takes an aquired taste to listen to the guy. I've only got the "Them" album, here's a track off that album. Welcome Home

And a great live version. Love it when bands can sound close to the recorded version. Not fucking the song up fast or really slow!

I'm too lazy to post youtube links and stuffs but I have become addicted to NoFX. I'm not really down with their political views but their music takes me back to the days of the young smash my head through a wall version of me that I just really dig. California skate punk uber alles.

Um, well sometimes I hang out with the bad kids at my school, and I neglected the fact that they all had leftover crack shirts. it might have been because the shirts had inane heiroglyph-type pictures on them. anyways i remembered about them once and got ahold of some mp3s and i thought they were awesome. they reminded me of some black metal and some punk bands i used to like. its almost as if they mated.
