Title: Windows Media Player
Description: Anyone kill DRM?

So I've made friends with a girl here in London who just got an ipod and itunes so she went to transfer all of her music from WMP to itunes. What she didn't know was that all the music she's been ripping for a few years now is set to automatically encode with DRM protection by default. THis means she has several gigs of music kicking around that can't get onto her ipod. I've got it all on my removable hardrive... Anyone know what I can do?
TL:DR need a way, for free, to remove DRM protection from WMA fiels and turn them into any other format, since itunes is going to convert them to AAC/ACC whatever files later.

perhaaaaps.....
using folder options (XP) when the folder is opened and changing the file type.
open folder>select "tools">folder options>in the view tab their is an option "hide extensions for known file types", unclick this option.
Then rename the file. It sounds tricky to some, but the way you rename the file will actually change the format of it. So if you have a file that is named "awesome song.WMV" okay? After changing the option of the folder it is in you then would rename it to something like "awesomesong.mp3" and this would actually change the format of it, it's that simple. Or shit, whatever the file format is for an ipod song, I don;t know what that would be, but for example lats say the actual correct filename of an itunes file ends with .ACC okay? You would change it to "awesomesong.ACC" get it?
I dont know if this would work, or if you have already tried it, but it's a 1st step. There are other ways but lets start with this one.

Thanks so far no luck with just renaming the files... Burgh. All the programs I've looked at so far want money, which I would pay maybe, but it's not even my library. I did get one that was a trial. But it just limits the song's length to 90 seconds. Fuck you Sound Taxi.

She should just get rid of her ipod, it's overrated, I use an RCA mp3 player I bought for $30, it holds about a dozen albums of music, and I can swap em out with new shit in a couple minutes, I've never had any problem like the one you're talking about either.

I've got an ipod and I'll admit that they are a bit of an overrated mp3 player, but they work well with itunes (on a mac anyways) and the fact there are a million and one accessories for them is pretty awesome. Quite honestly though I only bothered getting one because they threw it in with the purchase of my new computer... I do love the fact that my touch can be used as a very limited pda helps keep me knowing where I am going at schoolz. God I hate DRM.

I've often come close to buying an mp3 player of some sort, but them I realize I would never use it. I wouldnt buy an ipod though if I did.

i use public transit to get to most places in my city, so spending up to or over an hour in just travel time is normal and my ipod keeps me occupied.
