Kingfisher, Nebraska: 1907 is drawing to a close and the citizens of the small town are eagerly awaiting the new year, all with their own hopeful expectations and eager plans. December had been a difficult month for many of the townsfolk-- farm animals had fallen ill during the particularly brutal winter and not a week seemed to go by when someone's neighbor or friend didn't seem to suffer from some tragic accident. The one boon they had been given to entertain them through this harsh month was the little traveling circus that rolled in and seemed to have no intention of tearing down its little yellow tents anytime soon. Certainly, the citizens were weary of these visitors at first, but it wasn't long before many of them became close companions, the allure of their magical talents too much for even the most steadfast non-believer.

As wine corks flew into the air and cheers went up to a grand, sparkling-new year, the night was spent in boisterous merrymaking while people everywhere celebrated the coming dawn of a brand new day by watching the much anticipated meteor shower that night. Unlike any seen before, the spectacle was nothing compared to what was about to descend upon the small town.

It wasn't until late the next morning that the bodies of seven citizens were first stumbled upon. The few photographs taken on the crime scene never appeared in any papers, but like most small towns, it was not long before everyone had heard the rumors. Ripped apart, they said, lying in pieces. The investigation mounted involved all the best and brightest of the Kingfisher police force as well as those in several surrounding cities, but to no avail. All eyes shifted to the circus-- everything terrible that had happened, none of it had begun until after they'd arrived. Why hadn't they left yet, after all?

Murmurs led to questions that led to public outburst. Left with little other choice, some of the circus 'freaks' loaded their bags and rolled out, suddenly shunned by the town that so recently had welcomed them in, while others stayed, disguising themselves to remain with loved ones and friends.

Kingfisher, Nebraska: 2007 brings yet another peaceful year of quiet solitude to the little tourist, farming town. The unsolved crimes of the past have been long forgotten in this modern world where the main concern among the citizens seems to be how to keep up with their booming out of state visitors, especially with the approaching winter holidays and meteor showers. Thus, when the caravans and trailers began winding their way in along the paved roads leading towards the city, no one seemed alarmed. As the yellow canvases started to dot Hawk's Field, a small curiosity began to grow, but mostly went by unnoticed.

The circus had reappeared in town.

Although led by a different crew, these 'misfits' carried with them the same mission their predecessors had one hundred years ago-- to stop the Nightrunners. Those fairy-tale creatures rumored to go 'bump in the night'? They were not nearly so fictional as everyone believed. Their powers were merely repressed, limiting them to small acts of mayhem... for the time being.

As the century of peace draws to a close, this threat lurks ever so silently in the shadows, biding their time and doing all they can to keep prying eyes away from them and turned on to...
