Welcome to Vernazza, Italy. One of five gems scattered about the Almafi coast. Its buildings and alley ways date all the way back to the early 1300s, when pirates ruled the seas and when that touristy tower was more than simply a look out to gaze at the lapping waves of the Mediterranean. Since its first buildings emerged from the rocky cliffs, Vernazza has thrived in more ways than one.

Vernazza is an old, honest-to-goodness fishing village. Nearly everyone's daddy is in the fish business or the wine business. Behind the village lies sloping terraced hills and hiking trails. Lemons, basil, grapes, and olives thrive due to the salty sea air and the rich soil found on the lush hillsides. And even beyond the thriving hillside and towering above the teeny village, is a school. And not just any school. Voltura Academy is the creme a la creme of boarding schools. Founded in 1889, Voltura isn't new to the art of teaching the arts.

Four years ago, Voltura opened its doors to international students and the student count boomed from a mere one hundred and fifty to a sturdy six hundred talented, aspiring artists and academically gifted teens. But no matter how picturesque Vernazza looks on the outside, when you mesh so many different cultures together into one school, you can help but wonder what goes on behind closed doors.
