Light In Darkness

October 2009.

Doctor Miranda Westcott, an English scientist, found a cure for cancer. It seemed to be a miracle, and a blessing of life for so many. She and her team of scientists genetically engineered a strand of the measles virus so that it would work with the body’s immune system instead of against it. The research spent years in development and testing. Finally, when it was ready for human tests, ten thousand and nine cancer patients across the globe were treated with the cure. Ten thousand and nine no longer showed any signs of cancer. The world went into an uproar. It was a godsend. Or, so they thought. The cure was even named the Godsend Cure.

December 2009.

The Godsend Cure no longer lived up to its name. The virus mutated and had severe effects on all those who were treated with it. The treated persons became monsters. They killed their families, and anyone and anything that crossed their path. The first sign of the mutated virus was in New York City. Soon, mass infections spread over the world. It seemed at first that the only way to become infected was through blood to blood or blood to saliva contact. The scientists who created the cure began to look for a way to fix their grave mistake.

January 2010.

The virus went airborne. The president of the United States put a quarantine on the entire continent in one night. There was still not cure to the Godsend Cure, or the Godsend Curse as it was now being called. The military began to evacuate those who remained uninfected onto ships in the Atlantic and Pacific, thinking that the infection wouldn’t carry over the ocean. They were wrong.

May 2010.

Ninety percent of the world’s population is dead. Nine percent is infected. One percent is immune. Those who are immune are struggling to survive. There is world wide power failure. There are no modes of communication. Water and fuel supply are running low. Food is becoming scarce. And to top it all off, the infected are becoming smarter.

How will you survive in a world that has shattered?
