Title: New Registered Player, Many Questions

curufaukor - December 17, 2007 07:40 PM (GMT)
Hi, I'm a new "lifetime" registered player and I have a number of questions...

First, I can't post in the general forum, even though I have an account; why is that?

Second, I live far out in the wilderness and haven't found a village yet -- I've met a few adventurers and talked to them, but none of them know about nearby villages (though one mentioned a cave). The only reason I want to go to a village is because I want to dig a hole, but I don't have a shovel. I can't figure out how to make a shovel, even though I know most Iron Age shovels were made of wood. HOW DO I MAKE A SHOVEL?

Third, let's say, hypothetically, that someone lived out far in the wilderness where they've only talked to two other people in many weeks and they've never seen a village. Let's say that this person has been attacked by Njerpez warriors and defeated them. And let's say that this person has had bad luck hunting otherwise. Why can't this person skin a Njerpez warrior carcass? I'm not saying that this person WOULD skin a Njerpez, but let's say they did want to, why can't they?

Fourth, I heard about UnReal World from the Dwarf Fortress forums -- and I think a lot of people who play that game would like UnReal World (and vice versa).

Sami has two member groups (in an effort to reduce spam I assume?)
He'll add you to the fully authorized group soon, assuming you followed all other emailed directions.

Unfortunately, shovel-making is prohibited. Why, I'm not sure.
Perhaps the lack of wooden shovels (to alleviate coding requirements for the shovels breaking frequently, as wooden ones would, is one guess) would be the reason.

Same reason that no other human can be skinned, it would simply be too difficult to do.
Personally, I think it should be possible, and come with a huge hit to interactions should you be caught wearing or carrying anything made from said man-skin. the penalty should probably be permanent and worldwide as soon as it's caught, to introduce a real consequence of cannibalism (I guess eating man-meat could be excused in dire situations :P)

I play both as well (and there's even a topic on the general forum about DF ;))

Hmmm. Is there a way to make suggestions for future improvements? It would be nice to make shovels.

For that matter, it would be nice to make birch-bark clothing. We can loot or buy birch-bark clothing and we can peel bark from alder trees, but we can't peel bark from birch trees to make birch-bark clothing...

As far as "man-skinning" goes, my understanding is that it was rather a frequent policy in late Medieval / early Rennaissance England to skin criminals, tan their hides, and bind books with the resulting leather.

Not that I'm asking for book-binding -- clearly, our characters are illiterate.

Well, if you're having a hard time hunting, don't forget you can still # C to cut up a human corpse for meat.

It was a practice... but this certainly isn't England, nor have any real connections to medieval times except through the foreign traders.

There are generally several places to post suggestions, most general suggestions (new items, crafting recipes, etc.) should end up in the general forum under a suggestions thread.

Specific and exceptional improvements should probably get their own thread, either in the version 3.xx forum or the general forum, depending on if it relates to the latest update changes. (something to implement or change in the new conversation dialogs for instance would probably be more suited to the 3.xx forum... from my view of things anyways :P )

And while the PC might be illiterate, there is literacy in UrW (planned atleast)
Just look for the runesingers. Runes are written afterall ;)

the easiest way to get a shovel is to play as a trapper (option 6) so you'll start with a shovel, plus some traps you can trade away (if you don't want them).

try to start new characters near villages (the red dots on the map) so you can get a good start to the game. you can always wander off away from the villages later if you want to live on your own, this just gives you a good point of reference if you do want company or a healer etc.

many of us here play both urw and df. they're both loads of fun. welcome to the UnrealWorld :D

I finally decided to find a town to buy a shovel so I could make a cellar and after weeks of travel (80+ km), I finally found three villages all close to each other right on the shore of a lake.

Overjoyed, on my way to the first village, I was ambushed by a Lynx within 1 overland square of the village. It ate me.
