Title: Minor 3.04 Bug

citybob - December 16, 2007 12:11 PM (GMT)
Fighting a lynx, I wield an arrow. The lynx charges and I get the message "you dropped your arrow". Nonetheless the cursor appears. When I fire I'm told 'the tree trunk is too heavy to fire". I'm not carrying a tree trunk. As I said, it's minor; wouldn't have got a shot off anyway.
Also, and this was true in 3.03, I get messages that my dog is attacking an enemy several spaces away. I think it usually happens when I can't see it (the enemy that is).

thought i'd tack this on here instead of starting another thread B)

i just encountered a group of foreign traders sleeping in the rain. first i investigated what they had on them, then i pushed (h), thinking to sneak up on them and build pits to push them in. all i got was "The game is controlled mainly by key commands. Press ? to see list of commands." the game was stuck and i had to end the program and restart it. the problem may have been with the traders (they didn't have much stuff btw).

they showed up again while i was in the nearby village, and nothing bad happened - odd. i even tried ducking behind something and (h)iding again, and nothing unusual happened, so i couldn't reproduce the problem. frustrated, i grabbed my shovel and got to work :P

I jsut got that and came on here to report it. No eltter, arrow, space, esc fixes it. Task manager says the game is still running and responding, only goes to not responding when you try to end it and it takes some time. Happened to me when I used the / under ? to look at a wolf or one of the gluttons that was attacking me on failed hunting trip.

Not so bad, I got to mallet the little pests more than once, but this happened three times in a row. The third time and maybe the second when I loaded it seemed to have a different set up, to have jumped ahead, or dropped on a place where stuff was arleady going on. There was a dead woodsman a tile or two from the dead father, the wold disappeared the second time but returned the third from a similar position, and gluttons (probably to eat the woodsman's body) came on the third and maybe second times. I had the same equip and father had dropped the same all times, ofcourse.

*is glad he hasn't been bothered to update lately, as this bug would drive him nuts*

Just saw something elsewhere on the forum to delete old version entirely before installing, I don't think I did that. Maybe that is causing the problem. Even if it isn't, I'll fix it to prevent other bugs. Sad to lose such a great start, but this game is partly about solving problems, eh?
(I updated from 2.91 after playing for a little while in february, this didn't happen just a couple glitches which seem to be fixed in the log.)

Eh, double post. I'm deleting my old folder etirely and re-installing. Since it's the same version, do you think I could copy in my character's file and have it work? Or could this cause problems/continue the bug? I doubt it's in my character, but I don't know what other parts of the file are normally altered by having a character.

The problem is that the saves contain a large bit of game code, apparently.

You can try the save, but if you're still having problems, try starting a new character.

I haven't had a chance to try the 3.04-1 version yet, since I've not been home for the last week.

If this bug comes up more often I'd like to hear from it.
This seems odd since "The game is controlled mainly by key commands. Press ? to see list of commands." message is produced by the game if you do click mouse in the main game screen, and if the message is produced, the game input interface should work just fine. And I'm puzzled about the situation where mouse click is correctly interpreted by the game but keyboard is not.

Is it possible he has Mouse Keys on, under Accessibility Options in Windows?

I have Mouse Keys on most of the time, it is quite handy for some games, and being able to make a left click without taking your hand off the keyboard is quite handy.

Just poke Num 5 with your pinky finger! ;)
