Once upon a time there was a guy named Eino the 3rd. He and his fathers were from the kaumolainen tribe. He had always been told stories how bad luck his ancestors had when it came to surviving the wilderness. But Eino III was a determined man.
His father and grandfather had been fishermen, but they had both died in the forests. Granpa drowned, so Eino III decided to never swim so Näkki could not catch him. His father was slaughtered by a Njerpez in his camp, so Eino III decided he would not get surprised in his camp. He would be ready to fight any invaders. The father didn't have a shovel, so he could not dig trap pits around his camp to stop the Njerpez.
Eino the 3rd became a trapper. There was a good hunter in his village, and Eino asked him to teach how to survive. The hunter teached him, showed how to to camp fire, how to build traps and so on. Eino built himself a couple of traps and felt he was ready to try on his own. He thanked his teacher.
When he got home, his mother was there waiting for him. She was both very worried and proud of her son. But she knew Eino III was a determined man, so she did not try to stop him going to the wilderness. Instead, she gave him a shovel so he could keep himself safe. Eino really liked this present, as shovels were expensive and rare items. He thanked his mom and promised to come back next year.
Eino wandered around for a while until he found a good spot to build a trap fence. He decided he was far enough from villages, so he could start hunting here. He built a shelter, and dug some trap pits around his camp to be safe.
All went well for a while. He kept himself busy building trap fences and traps, fishing and doing some hideworking. He even built himself a raft, just in case he had to escape from njerpez. He had heard the story of his father getting away from those evil men with his raft, but father had returned to his camp too soon and was ambushed and killed.
Eino III had managed to kill some reindeers and wind sows, and even a bear, so he had plenty of food and hides, and he was thinking about building a cottage for the winter. He did not want to go back to his village, not just yet. Although there was this one lovely maiden...
Then it became time to go check his trap fence again. He got his equipment and walked near his fence. Then he carefully sneaked closer... first trap empty, second trap empty... but what is this ? This trap had been triggered, but no animal in it. He walked closer and saw some tracks on the ground. Before he had time to recognize them, he heard a bark. A dog!
Eino turned to his left and saw an angry wild dog rushing at him. Luckily it was still far enough, so Eino climbed on his trap fence and shot an arrow at the wild dog - missed.
Eino was not really scared of the situation. Just a few weeks earlier there had been a bear near his trap fence. The bear had just walked right trough his smaller traps. Eino shot the bear with arrows, then when it got too close, climbed over the fence and shot again. He managed to stay calm, and think. He knew he was not very good with bows, so he might not be able to kill the bear. So he had to lure the bear to a spiked trap pit. He ran along the fence, with the bear running on the other side, until he got to the pit. There he stopped and waited for the bear to fall into the pit. Then it was easy to kill the bear.
Eino III was a determined man, and he decided he would try to do the same with the dog. Standing on top of his fence, he saw the dog was still far away. So he turned around to see how far is the next trap pit. Yes, it is just behind that tree.
Then he hear the dog getting closer. Eino tried to turn around to see how far the dog was, when he was pulled down from the fence, and got eaten by the hungry wild dog.
( I was rather annoyed at myself. Why did I not just jump off the fence? Why did I try to turn with 45 degree turns? )
I made that mistake once. 'Twas rather annoying, mind you.
