I am proud to present to the URW community my newest labor of love for URW - my new URW website! B)
Here is the link:
http://www.freewebs.com/unrealthoth/index.htmThis site contains most of the contents of my old guidebook and a link to Est's random name, tribe, season and scenario generator. I plan to add a lot more to this website, and if there is anything I got wrong, or anything I missed (especially in the Weapons chart), send me a message.
Please let me know what you think of the site!
And Sami, I would just like you to know that there are those among us who will love and support URW forever. Keep up the good work! :D
NOTE: Wood chart and alternate graphics set removed, for revisions regarding the latest version of the game.

Um, very good, detailed stuff - entirely excellent work... But it is in Freewebs...? :ph43r:
Thoth - March 22, 2006 03:49 PM (GMT)
What is wrong with Freewebs? I get a bandwidth of 500MB per month free. :)
Defenser - March 22, 2006 05:23 PM (GMT)
Mainly ads <_<
It'll do for your site, but I wouldn't use it for anything... But don't get me wrong, your site itself is outstanding.
Thoth - March 22, 2006 07:36 PM (GMT)
Awww c'mon that tiny banner doesn't really count. :P
leerok - March 22, 2006 09:05 PM (GMT)
I think it's quite an excellent site. Just one question, though. Why are all the charts images instead of plain text? Some of them, like the weapons charts can be done just as well with plain HTML.
Thoth - March 22, 2006 09:50 PM (GMT)
Basically because I didn't want to have to format much, and they also look quite nice... that is the face of an actual lynx behind the phobias image. ;)
Also, some of the charts and sections needed graphic representation anyway, so I just went all the way it. :D
aislinn - March 23, 2006 05:03 AM (GMT)
thoth, i love the lynx, it's adorable! :D i've yet to see anyone who can produce as much clear, useful information as you have. keep at it, dude.
leerok - March 23, 2006 06:10 AM (GMT)
http://files.filefront.com/2006_03_22__URW...;/fileinfo.htmlI just decided to do some of the charts in HTML. I just happen to like HTML a lot because it's smaller and you can resize it and stuff. You can take it and use if if you like.
And it needs a browser that uses CSS to look as it does in the screenshots. I don't think IE6 does the job, but hopefully IE7 will support CSS properly when it comes out. I use Firefox myself.
http://leerokthelacerta.blogspot.com/2006/...oths-stuff.htmlAlso stuck it on my Blogspot, where it's only viewable if the browser supports Base64 stuff. Firefox and Konqueror are both able to view it.
Joonaz93 - March 30, 2006 03:39 AM (GMT)
It wont open.
What is the matter?
Anyways, i saw your website ones and seems to be carrying very usefull
information of URW.
Some new things for me.
I hope that you will someday upgrade your website.
However, your website could be usefull for me but, it wont open :(
EDIT:
Yep, i tried even Firefox, but it opens no more.

If you had added my site to your "Favorites" before today that link wont work anymore - add the new one at the beginning of this thread. I had to move the site to another Freewebs account due to size limitations. :D
leerok - March 30, 2006 04:14 AM (GMT)
Duh, Thoth, your website seems to have gone missing. I get a "Page Not Found".
Thoth - March 30, 2006 04:19 AM (GMT)
Sorry, I had changed the URL in the stickied "URW Guidebook" thread at the top - I had overlooked this one. It will work fine now. ;)
leerok - March 30, 2006 04:23 AM (GMT)
Yay, it works again. Don't forget your signature.
By the way, you've played Uplink, have you?
Est - March 30, 2006 01:29 PM (GMT)
Hey Thoth, I was almost going to ask you to host my name generator on your site - I was planning on doing some cleaning up around my geocities account, maybe switch to some other service.
But, since you already put it there, all's fine and dandy B)
(Actually the whole generator idea was yours! God... has it been a year already? Time flies...)
I see it was also unstickied from the top of the forum, so that solves the other issue, but to anyone who might have the page in their favourites (well, who knows?) : well, you might get a 404, so it's safer to just go to Thoth's site from now on.
Thoth - March 30, 2006 05:14 PM (GMT)
Leerok: Yes, I play Uplink - if you visit my page for it, I have three skins I have made for Uplink, and thematic gateways for each. I am a big fan of Introversion games, especially since I finally got Darwinia (take a look at my page for that game too). :D
Est: I figured you wouldn't mind me linking to your generator. Even if I did suggest it, you did the footwork. ;) After I published my website here, all of my other stickies were removed as well - makes sense to me, but I'm going to ask URWelo to sticky this thread instead. The "URW Guidebook" thread sounds like its just a manual.
Joonaz93 - March 30, 2006 06:14 PM (GMT)
Good! It works again!
No problem anymore.
Thoth - June 2, 2006 09:08 PM (GMT)
Just updated the sprite for the Foreign Trader... now he has a nice iron helmet, and a sword slung at his back (also you cant see through the sprite anymore).
Subtle, yet essential to the portrayal of the best-armed character in URW (besides me). :D
I like it. B)

Not that it's such a big deal, but you could have given me cred for figuring out the formulas and initial skill point distribution numbers for each tribe - or at least indicate that it isn't your own work if you'd lost the source.. ;)
As for the two 'unlisted stats' they influence (encumbrance indirectly) how well you perform skill actions, fighting included. Or at least they used to - I haven't had time to play 2.9x much yet, unfortunately.
"Also, keep in mind that this chart does not list racial stat values, which all of the skills are based on, so much of the information in this chart is relative to how well you roll your character's stats." is kind of misleading. If you roll a 15 for strength, a 12 for dexterity and a 17 for agility and use the formula for the shield skill, you get (15+12+17)/3 (rounded down) which is 14. The 'base value' is thus 14, and if you've picked Kaumolainen you get 3 times this value, i.e. 42. Driikilainen would only get 28 points in the shield skill, conversly (only 2 initial points). Doing the same for the spear skill yields a base value of (15 +(2*12))/3 = 13. Koivulainen would according to the chart start with 52 points in the spear skill, while Kaumolainen would start with only 39 points.
Of course, you can't really tell exactly what values you've just rolled as they're displayed as bars, but that's what happens behind the scenes (and is reflected in the savegame..). What culture/tribe you select affects the min/avg/max values of these attributes/traits, but I didn't have the patience to figure out the exact numbers.. (With the new, more windows-friendly version, I might write an app to automate the process - it'd be a fun programming-challenge anyhow..)
Good luck with your site =)
Thoth - July 6, 2006 07:22 AM (GMT)
Hey, pH7 I'm glad you spoke up! I have made the appropriate changes to the website. I had gotten that chart from a web page that disappeared at one point - I had no idea whose it was! I am glad you saw it and said something, so I can give credit where credit is due. ;)
Est - August 31, 2006 11:57 AM (GMT)
On a side note...
I was feeling creative this morning, so I added ambient foresty sounds to the name generator :)
Thoth - January 18, 2007 04:29 AM (GMT)
Just updated my alternate sprite set for URW:
* Now, wooden stakes, firewood, fences, staffs, bows and arrows, are made of yellowish wood, to show that it is dry and possibly sanded. Tree Trunks and Slender Tree trunks also have a little yellow on the end, but are still brown, to show they are dry, unsplit wood.
Get a copy of my updated sprite set from the website link in my signature below! :D
P.S. Thanks for the update Est (didn't see it before), the name generator sounds great now!
Styx - March 24, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
Um: It doesn't open. Shows: "Click on our sponsors below, opens up a new page" with nothing to click on.
Paul - March 24, 2007 07:59 PM (GMT)
That's just freewebs being evil, click in the upper right corner "Skip the Ad"
Styx - March 24, 2007 08:20 PM (GMT)
...except that there is no such button.
Paul - March 24, 2007 08:39 PM (GMT)
there is for me... it also loads fully after a few seconds of being on the ad. Thats just a freewebs advertisement, skip the ad only skips the waiting.
bstemarie - March 24, 2007 09:01 PM (GMT)
It doesn't load fully for me. It loads text with no background, and it doesn't load any images... I can view one image at a time on its own page if I want, but that's all (and I have to look at their little ad page again each time).
I'm using firefox though. Just now, I opened internet explorer (and temporarily unblocked it with my firewall) to give it a try. It works okay in IE. But it worked perfectly in firefox before those stupid ads were implemented.
aislinn - March 25, 2007 10:13 AM (GMT)
thoth, i was able to get to the spot where i could see the sprites and the downloads (both yours and sami's original) but just before i downloaded i noticed that the sprites were for the old mushrooms and berries. how will this affect the graphics in 3.0? will the new mushrooms and things like cloudberries and broadbeans show up properly?
Thoth - April 20, 2007 05:20 PM (GMT)
Yes, actually I just updated my site by removing the wood-flow chart (due to needed revisions regarding the newest version), and I also removed my graphics tileset - Sami is doing some new things with graphics, and I will wait until it all comes together before working on another set. ;)
As far as I can tell, everything else in my website still applies to the game - if you notice any discrepencies, please send me a message about it. :)
Pthalo - April 27, 2007 03:37 PM (GMT)
Some things to think about when you do update the wood flow chart:
300 wooden stakes are needed, not 600, to get through the whole winter, though that may have changed slightly since sometimes I wake up shivering in October, even if I don't get frostbite. But you need 4 wooden stakes every other day, so 15 days out of the month you need to relight the stove, so 60, 60*5 months = 300. 60*6 months if October is being a pain is 360.
Since you get 8 firewoods from cutting a wooden block, and you need 8 to fill the stove, you don't need to make firewoods for the stove, so that's a little less time spent on cutting things. I only make firewoods when I'm burning on the ground for agriculture.
AbNo - April 27, 2007 06:22 PM (GMT)
I still wish there was an easier way to get rid of bushes/moss than with fire.
Maybe a shovel? ;)
