Winter sure is brutal, 6 frostbite injuries after moving from town to home... Not fun, not fun at all.

Ah well! That's the Unreal Life for you!

Oh right, this Blaze, Frostbite Victim, reporting from..... home.

So while I whittered the hours away in front of the fireplace, I couldn't help but ponder some questions.

1. Does the fireplace's warmth only affect adjacent squares? As you can see, my bed(s) is one square further, and I often wake up shivering from the cold. Shouldn't the fireplace(s) at least affect spaces within an enclosed space? Don't beds have blankets?

2. In shops, I've seen Duck cuts, but I've never seen a duck, or any bird other than the black grouse.

3. Strangely enough(or not), tanning sheep hide results in... tanned sheep hide, I was really hoping to get wool.

4. Similar to the above, I butchered the carcass of cattle, but instead of getting beef, such as those sold in shops, I get cow/bull cuts.

5. Are there any other uses for animal fat besides tanning? I think I've seen tallow candles somewhere, and I believe it could be used to make them.

6. Does equipping armor that raises protection at a certain area that is already at green do anything? That is, if my cold protection is already at the green level, and I equip another armor that raises cold protection at that place, does it have any effect?

7. Is it possible to jump from boat to boat while on water? I was thinking of making a floating base in which to store my things.

8. I've seen squirrels and foxes jump over my fences, which is why I built spiked trap pits between them, are there any more animals that can climb fences? Are there animals that can "jump" over pits as well?

9. I've found that crossbows/heavy crossbows, use arrows, I'm pretty sure that they were supposed to use bolt or quarrels, is this an intentional change in order to keep things simple? And come to think of it, do arrows ever deteriorate?

10. What does a sauna do exactly? I think it might have an effect on fatigue/warmth level, so I try to take one at least once a day if possible, for personal hygiene as well.

11. Do pits do any real damage? I've trapped a trader in a pit which they kept falling into because they had no other movement available, but after all that time, it never died.

12. Does using Fine/Poor fur affect the quality of anything made from them?

13. Are deteriorated weaponry/armor less effective than brand new ones?

14. What are the two bloodscapes on the performance penalty there for?

15. I've noticed one critical thing, a lack of face armor. I know it's not feasible to have bulky face armor, seeing that it's pointless to protect your face if you can't use what's on it. So far, the only things I've found that affect the face area are veils and hoods. Are there any others?

16. Do repeated plantings eventually wear out the soil?

17. Is there any way to cure food poisoning? Do bite attacks from snakes cause poisoning?

18. Is it possible to completely strip a tree of bark/branches/twigs?

19. Do beds/benches/tables serve any real function besides aesthetic value?

20. How large is the effect of taste on the nutritional value of food?

FadeThen - July 24, 2008 02:58 AM (GMT)
I think it's due to radiant heat. I mainly just build my bed right by the fireplace for that reason.

2.Maybe it's like horse cuts.

3.No idea, sorry.

4. Still beef, only named for the animal killed.

5. You can eat it in a pinch.

6. You may have encumbrance problems, but other than that, no idea.

7.no idea

8. Njerpez (sp?) can climb fences if they really want to get at you. Be careful.

9. no idea

10. no idea

11. If the pits have stakes at the bottom, they can be deadly. >:)

12. Fine will fetch a better price than Poor.

13. I think so, but I'm not sure.

14. Decoration.

15. not that I know of.

16. No idea.

17. A sage an heal you. Not sre about the snakes.

18. no.

19. Not that I know of.

20. None at all, that I know of.

Very nice house!

1. I always put my bed next to the fireplace...I want to warm up quick! I leave all of my preserved skins and hides on the bed like blankets. I don't know if it helps but it looks nice.

2 (and 3, 4). There still seem to be many things that townsfolk and merchants somehow seem able to get their hands on but players aren't able to create from raw materials. Things like wool and linen clothing, several food items, pots, shovels, etc. I suppose it at least gives them something to do. I agree that the naming conventions at times take away some of the color, but delicious roasted cattle cuts are pretty filling.

5. I've always imagined the 0.2 pounds or so of reindeer fat I have left after preparing a large skin is just the stuff stuck to my fingers, as such I've always felt obliged to eat it immediately. It's really not good for anything else.

6. Pretty sure once you hit green you're at maximum. If you manage to have top protection against the particular type of attack and body part you're *practically* invincible except from critical hits anyways. Wearing two complete layers of very good fur hasn't seemed to make me warmer in winter than a somewhat lighter but still green for warmth arrangement either.

7. Tried swimming? I haven't, but can think of no other way.

8. Humans can climb fences. I haven't seen it in any other animals myself.

9. Arrows don't deteriorate but randomly break on impact making replacements necessary. I think the lack of bolts is an intentional simplification, if the arrows we're talking about here are simply sticks with rocks tied to them could they serve both purposes?

10. One of the game tasks mentions saunas ability to speed recovery from wounds, including diseases and poisoning.

11. Nope. You can build one, fall in it (AHHH!), get out, fall in (AHHH!), get out, full tilt run at it (AHHH!) etc. all day long.

12. Like FadeThen said it's just price in selling the materials.

I don't know any answers for 13-20, except 18 and 19 which are both "no"

I believe sleeping in a bed increases your rate of healing. The other items are only aesthetic in nature.

AbNo - July 25, 2008 06:36 AM (GMT)
MMm, Maplicito, I've seen nothing that confirms this. As far as I can tell, beds have no effect.

Sami, can you confirm or deny this rumor, please?

*drinks more*

Beds don't heal you, you just sleep a bit more comfortably -> longer in a bed.

Paul - July 29, 2008 06:25 PM (GMT)
Longer? So sleeping in a bed wastes time?...

Is there any good effect from sleeping longer, or does it just eat up more time?

In the wild a character may not sleep comfortably enough to have a zero fatigue when waking up - in the bed, this happens more often. Although, if the weather is good and nothing wakes you up you can get a good night sleep in the wild too.

AbNo - August 1, 2008 11:08 AM (GMT)
So in other words, you'll get back to zero "tired", as opposed to waking up with, say, 20% sleepiness?

Blaze - August 12, 2008 02:30 AM (GMT)
Okay..... so the bed thing is solved, what about the other questions?

Oh, I'm stuck on the "Spirit World" Task(Learn a new ritual) on the advanced course (again), I don't have any new rituals to learn, and it doesn't finish even if I get the "You feel at unity with the world" message. Is there something else I'm supposed to do?

rhodesia3590 - August 12, 2008 11:24 PM (GMT)
has anyone found a pot in 3.10 i've yet to see one

AbNo - August 13, 2008 01:11 AM (GMT)
You might be in the wrong area. Certain items are only available in certain regions.

proffles - August 13, 2008 11:55 AM (GMT)
Rhodesia3590,

I share the pot-dearth pain. I've found my first ever for sale after countless characters in a Koivula village. Just dumb luck, I think... But I don't understand why they are so rare.

Side-note to Sami... I've always assumed the pots are made of metal, so hence maybe rare; but could they not be clay - I think most cultures would use pots, not just metal-rich ones. Would it fit into the Unreal World's ethos for women to be more likely to have pots in their inventory to trade with us?
