Title: Pots, Cooking Gear, And Other Fun Things
Description: Yay for food!

FadeThen - July 20, 2008 05:07 AM (GMT)
Alrighty, I've settled down, got myself a nice little house, and I have plenty of food- only, I'm sure my character is getting rather sick of dried/smoked meat and fish. I've scoured villages for pots for trade, and I've yet to find one. What's the best direction to head in (generally, on an Inland map) to find a Driik village? They're more likely to have one, right? Right now I'm in Kaumolainen territory. Any help is appreciated.

Also, interesting little glitch- if you set a loop snare in a village and an adventurer steps on it, you get 10 loop snares. Thought I'd share that little gem.

Interesting bug about the snares.

As for finding other tribes, check your map (on general character info) for an option to show cultural regions. B)

Thanks!

You won't find a Driik village on an inland map, they are an archipelago only culture. The Reemi, however, are also quite "civilized" and you can likely find a pot there. The usually live in the South East of the Inland.

Alright, I'll head SE and see what I can find. Luckily, I've got waaaaaay too many smoked meats, so I'm set for food/trade when I get there.

Also, have you noticed that dogs (while arguably being one of the more useful animals in the game) are remarkably cheap to buy?

Rain - July 21, 2008 05:01 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I noticed the same. You can pick up a dog for about 25 cuts of meat.

Cattle seem properly priced, however.

FadeThen - July 21, 2008 10:21 PM (GMT)
I'm not complaining about the dogs, though. :P

Cattle are very expensive, but worth it, imo. Also, are sheep worth it? I haven't bought one yet.

what do you do with dogs? Most of my animals are only there for their milk, carrying capacity, and their ability to provide fresh meat and hides in an emergency. By those standards cattle and reindeer have always been my best friends. I've heard dogs can help out in a fight, but I've always been into sneaking around and trying to get my prey in the back with one or two deciding blows...a tactic I always thought would be harder to do with a dog or two roped to you, then again maybe it's not. Is fighting all they're good for or am I missing something?

FadeThen - July 21, 2008 10:40 PM (GMT)
Mainly I use traps, but when I do hunt, I go after big prey (reindeer, elk, even bear), so having a pack of dogs I can take with me is very handy- and they're really cheap. I take at least two with me when traveling, in case there are Njerpez (sp?) hanging about. They're dead useful to me, but I'm not one for sneaking around.

I've never noticed any penalty for sneaking around with a pair of dogs.

I keep two with me at all times. One carries my spare tools and my 'loot'(a small ax and knife, shovel, some rope etc and my collection of bracelets/anklets) and the other carries my survival kit (bag of flour, pot of water, bandages). Take all my gear, and as long as I have my dogs I am ok.

Dogs don't really do a lot of damage, but they do frequently knock down an opponent. The best thing about them is that sometimes the opponent will ignore you and go for a dog. The next best is when you get knocked out...the dogs can sometimes kill your attacker, thus saving your life. But that can be said for any pet.

Bulls are also good fighters. And the cargo capacity is just awesome. A cow is not quite as tough or strong, but has milk. But the mooooooo....7 times when cutting down a tree...mooooooo....drives me nuts.

Sheep are just little cows as far as I am concerned. They do however give wool, one of the better furs for making clothing. I try to collect and slaughter a half dozen every fall to make a good fur suit. The ram is actually an ok fighter.

I have not seen a horse this version.

Pigs seem to give a lot more meat (I just slaughtered 5: ~455 meat).

Haven't played too much with reindeer, but I'm guessing they are right in the middle : good capacity, a decent attack, and good fur. They appear genderless... can they be milked?

Has anyone been able to rope a bear or lynx in this version?

The lynx was just nasty...very delicate, but it killed in 2-3 hits. I had one pet lynx kill quite a few bears before being trampled by a stag.

The bear was just broken. HUGE capacity and probably a better fighter than my character. I once had a character with two... he killed so many NJs with no effort. Died of Plague.

How did you get close enough to the bear to rope it without it attacking? I always have to end up killing it.

Also, I ave a whole pack with me right now- four dogs. The two white ones carry food, and the two brown ones carry my tools, furs, clothes etc.

I'm saving up for a bull atm.

Generally, you have to sneak up on it while it's asleep.

n9103 - July 22, 2008 04:30 AM (GMT)
RE: bear roping- same as any other hostile animal really. Wait for it to go to sleep and sneak up on it.

Paul - July 22, 2008 11:50 PM (GMT)
Maybe im just getting poor characters, but what affects sneaking chance? I always get the sticks breaking under my feet constantly even when I can't see animals, and am insta-spotted as soon as I am in view of the animal.

The closest I've gotten to a sleeping bear before it woke up was 2 squares away (as in 2 squares between us). The next step it spotted me & woke up, the next step it got up and attacked.

The only way I managed that was because the forest was thick and I was 2 squares away before I even saw it, and I was spotted the next step even though he was asleep and I was still in hiding between 2 trees.

I still manage to capture bears and such, but I have to use the pit method - make a trap pit (no spikes) right beside where you zoom in at when you enter on a square, then come back every so often to check it and rope any sleeping animals that show up.

I don't know. I think it has something to do with fatigue, injury and encumbrance. I have better chances when I'm not holding much, am not tired and in good condition.

Ever since I bought the new version I haven't be able to do this. When I enter local map from regional I enter in a random location.

Is this a bug on my install, or are you using an older version?

Paul - July 29, 2008 06:31 PM (GMT)
Ah, well I haven't TRIED the pit method in the latest version. I just assumed it would still work, haha. I did it plenty in the older versions.

As far as sneaking up on animals, I never seem to be able to do it.

I just made a save backup of a char ready to sneak up on a sleeping bear. At first I tried it with all my stuff, no go. Then I tried to sneak up on it with full health and carrying nothing but a rope (no clothing or anything at all to weigh me down) and I still had the branch snap thing and it woke up just in time to eat me before I got in the square to rope it. I then tried (also naked with nothing but a rope) to sneak a little bit and then RUN the last couple squares, but it woke up on the first step, got up on the second, and ate me.

Maybe my char is really not stealthy? I wonder what affects it... some of my stats are rather low, maybe dexterity or agility affects it? Both of those are a bit on the low side. Or I'm just really unlucky.

rud - July 29, 2008 08:24 PM (GMT)
I don't know what stats are involved but I've always played owl tribe and always seem to be very stealthy. Currently I have dex and agility that is in the 90-95% area. I also have the second smallest physique, weighing only 112 pounds which may factor in somewhat too, but I'll bet it's just a combination of dex and agility. From your troubles Paul it doesn't even sound like carry weight is at all a factor.

I've been putsing around with making an editor lately to help me test stuff like this out, but so far I can load and save skill levels but not attributes yet.

Paul - August 1, 2008 03:48 AM (GMT)
It could be the size, the char I am playing is a Reemilainen giant - 81" 237lbs. He has max str/endurance, near max speed, but only about 1/2 of the bar on dex/agil. Hes a real beast when it comes to fighting njerpez, but apparently he can't sneak to save his life. He's scared of cats, too, so he avoids lynx's like the plague.

I just accepted the first thing it gave me when making him, haha. The char's size is actually somewhat similar to me in RL, I'm about 6'7" or 6'8" (a little bit shorter than his 6'9"). I'm also not very stealthy, although I'm sure I could learn if I spent more time hunting and such :)

Eh, height has nothing to do with stealth, Paul.

I'm 6'4", and a frickin' ninja. :ph43r:
