Title: Hunting Horns, Pet Control, Newbie Questions

I picked up the game a few days ago. I'm having a lot of fun with it but I have a few hundred nagging questions, and none of my characters have survived long enough to make it past halfway through either the standard tutorial or the advanced course, and the FAQs didn't help. I really need to stop picking fights with bears just to see if they can do it. One guy did, but he died from bloodloss an hour later. :(

1.) Trap fences. Is a longer fence always better, or can you block off a natural choke point like the little bit of land between two lakes and get the same effect?

2.) How do you draw an animal towards you or to step on a trap? Is it really as simple as dropping meat? How close does an animal have to be to go for it? Can some animals smell meat from the next zone or a few zones over and head towards it?

3.) Can you see all animals and people in the area when climbing trees on the zoomed out map? Can they go unnoticed?

4.) If I encounter something like a bear and immediately leave the area and zoom out, does the bear ever reappear on the map? Does the bear still move around between zones, or does it stay in that zone and wait for you to zoom in again?

5.) Does storing food in a cave help stop it from spoiling? Do cellars work just by dropping food on them?

6.) Fishing. Does it matter what tile you're fishing into, or are they all the same along the same stretch of river?

7.) Is there a way to pass time while still staying up a tree you've climbed?

8.) How do you light a torch? Can you use it to discourage an animal from attacking you?

9.) Can you command an offensive pet, like a dog, to attack something? If you let them off the leash, is there a way to recall them, or make them want to come back to you? The second I take the leash off anything it bolts and I never see it again. Uhh... do you have to feed them even?

10.) What skill is used when you throw a javelin, or an axe? Is it the spear/axe skill or just based on stats like dexterity?

11.) Does the hunting horn do anything?

1. I dunno - I haven't trapped for a couple of versions but I seemed to do okay using chokepoints.

2. Meat seems to help, but I don't know much about this one.

3. You will see people and larger animals, but won't see small ones.

4. Don't know :)

5. Don't know about the cave. Yes, you just drop food on cellars.

6. Tiles close to shore will likely get you the smaller fish varieties, farther from shore will get things like salmon and trout.

7. I don't think so.

8. Stand next to a fire, and (a)pply it. I don't think it chases animals off.

9. You can't command them, they're kind of unreliable and random, although they do still help a lot. When they're off a leash, you have to catch up to them, and (a)pply the leash again.

10. Should be the spear/axe skill.

11. It MAY help with hunting, I don't know for sure. Sometimes it seems to, sometimes it doesn't.

Thank you.

For the ones Map didn't get...

4. Zooming out will typically make anything in that sector disappear.

Though not always. Settlements (player-built houses) tend to have this not happen.

7. No. Neat idea, though. Could watch for passing animals.

8. No. Also a neat idea.

9. NPCs seem to be able to feed themselves.

10. I believe throwing a weapon uses the skill for the group that weapon is in. (Rocks are clubs, I believe)

11. At one time, the Hunting Horn would summon an animal (as in, it would just appear nearby), this does not seem to be the case anymore.

Thanks. I just figured out you can throw meat, or pretty much anything, by unwielding both your hands and pressing t, then selecting what you want to throw. I think I got a fox to turn around and come back after throwing some meat between us.
