Title: Hill/moutain Clearing Bug (fences)
Description: Humor

So, I decided I would try cave living for a while, and I found an amusing bug....
You can remove hills and mountains by building fences on them and deconstructing the fences!
Digging pits has no effect, but the fences thing is kind of funny.
Obligatory screenshot.

of course... you *had* to build a fireplace in there. :P

i wouldn't have thought you could build a fence on those tiles, but that is extremely cool.
it may not be realistic, but PLEASE Sami, leave this in the game! i would love to be able to live in a modified cave/cottage like that!
or if it can't be left as-is, at least code in pick-axes so we can deal with cave walls and big stones in the yard and such.

Pick-axes would be great but for now mountains are too small.

Alright, this unreal feature stays at least for awhile.
Always nice to find some bugs _pleasing_ people :)

Update!
It also clears out cave floors.
After several (in game) months of work, I was able to build an entire HOUSE into the cave.

I kind of like it, actually. When I get the chance, I am going to finish the outside wall, hopefully before Winter sets in, though maybe I should wait for Winter....
You can also see I moved the fireplace, the bed, and the cellar.
The little two-tile niche in the Southwest corner was just PERFECT for a cellar with a door!
Because of how the game considers a valid place to build a floor and ceiling, there is no way to get that one square in the North (3 above the sauna scoop) to be the same. I haven't figured out what I will put there yet, maybe a shutter.
All in all, this is kind of neat, and I believe it perfectly reasonable that someone working for months on almost nothing else COULD turn a cave into a nice living place.
Actually....

I've found out you can also land your raft on a 'Big rock', and as soon as you do, that rock disappears

Abno - will your cave fireplace let you smoke meat? I did something similar, but the game does not seem able to recognize my cave as a "heated room." I also tried building a sauna onto the side of the cave, so I could easily go outside to the sauna to smoke meat, but I still can't smoke meat there - it seems perhaps you need a fireplace with four wooden walls around it to smoke meats. Is this the same as you have found?

EVERY single one of the squares in the cave is actually a floor & ceiling. That's actually what took the longest.
Except for the door and cellar.
What I had to do was fence the entire cave, build some walls, then floor & ceiling every grass square in the cave.
It's not near any water, either, so I had to drag logs for a while. :P
Also, there's a square at the top that is unable to be floored. I put a shutter in there.
Maplicito - May 24, 2008 05:57 AM (GMT)
Huh... I've got my whole cave entirely floored, other than the cellar - that seems to count as an outdoor tile. I have it closed off with a door too. I only have one wall inside the cave - that one keeps my cellar closed off, because one door wasn't wide enough to do the trick. I haven't fenced the cave though... maybe that's the problem - but I don't think I will bother building a fence around the outside of the whole cave. It WOULD be nice if I could smoke my food in there though, but I guess it's not necessary.

As Sami says "Send me your save!"
But seriously, double check and make sure you've got every square in the cave.
I think there needs to be at least 3 ceiling & floors next to the square you want to cook on.
Maplicito - May 24, 2008 09:26 AM (GMT)
Well, I tried building another fireplace - and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the number of floor tiles... I'll try emailing Sami when it's not after 3 in the morning where I'm at... good night everyone!

Weird.... I had to change caves because I had to trade for a bag of salt, and I can't get the fireplace to smoke meat anymore now, either.
I really wish I'd known I had to change maps to finish the Advanced Adventures. <_<
I'll try moving the fireplace around a while and see what I come up with.
Update!

It seems I can only smoke meats in this particular square.
Or rather, this is the first square I've found that will let me do so. It looks like it needs to be next to a heated fireplace AND a certain number of walls, in this case, five.

I have similar problems with smoking food in my home. I don't live in a cave, but an L-shaped house. There's a fire in the fireplace right now. I've tried every single tile, I can't smoke meat/fish anywhere in there! I have 5 floor/ceilings around the fireplace and 3 walls...but I wonder if in my case if its because some of the corners are inside out. To be honest I didn't think this shape would work at all, but for everything except smoking it's great.

Try moving your fireplace one square away from the corner (red), and smoking the meat between the wall and the fireplace (green).
proffles - June 12, 2008 11:53 PM (GMT)
Hmm... the smoking fireplace thing seems somewhat dodgy... I can smoke with an open door (top one), but not with a closed one!

Maplicito - June 13, 2008 12:38 AM (GMT)
Yeah, fires do seem dodgy. I finally managed to smoke meat in my cave - I put a new fireplace next to as many cave walls as I could manage - I think it was 4 - I also have that part of the cave wall and doored off from the rest of the cave, but I don't know if that makes a difference because that was already there before I put the new fireplace in.
