Title: Bug - "bark" Sound
Jimlad - April 27, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
This was picked up a while ago, but the bug seems to still be present in the current version. When stepping on a piece of bark, the game will play a "bark" sound.

As far as I know, it's a feature =)
Just like your tummy growls like an angry bear when really hungry.
Boy, was I in a mild panic untill I found out!
I think there is at least one more funny sound thing, but can't remember

The previous thread that mentioned this suggested that it was because the sound activates on the text that appears in the message log, and wasn't intended at all. Still, I guess it's up to Sami whether to keep this in or not.
That said, I think that if it *is* an easter egg, at least make it only happen the first time every day or so. It gets extremely annoying when I'm walking around my stores and have to listen to random barking all the time!

I think it's funny enough to be left in. On characters who hunt enough not to bother cutting the corpses for meat, I keep a piece or two of bark close to a water source for skins. On characters where I don't hunt quite that much, I use fat instead.

I agree I found it kinda funny the first time, but not the next 100 times! This is why I suggest that if it's intentional, it might be nice to have it in, but not all the time. I think it becomes seriously questionable when you start mentioning using alternative tanning materials to avoid it.

This is a noted feature-bug.
It's been brought up several times, and the general feeling seems to be that it be left in, mostly because some of us longtime players  about it.
I will say this much, I do usually end up going and muting all the cow/sheep sound files (use Sound Recorder, or your favorite audio program) just so I don't have to listen to a cacophany of animal noise when I'm trying to farm/trade.

If this'd work for other people stepping on them, it'd be a fun way to alert yourself about intruders. Perhaps get a guard-dog and place bark all around it in a certain radius. :P

Nah, it only occurs when the word "bark" appears in your message window. "You see here: [X]" or "You see a [X]" will cause bark to appear in the window.
