Title: A Spiral into Insanity
Description: A grown man and his toy soldiers

Marovian - September 24, 2007 09:35 PM (GMT)
Well, fresh off of Warseer and at Jasevx's invite, looks like I am here.

I have just got back grom getting married, (I highly recommend it by the way), so don't expect great things from this project log initially as I soon depart on honeymoon. However, here is a little reminder of my IG army, currently at about 35 guys complete:

And, my current project is the Tau. These have taken over from Guard as I am entering the doubles tournament in January with a friend, so I have got a deadline to work too. First off, and exclusive to ammo bunker, I have built the first two bases:

The one on the right needs a little work. The one on the left already has it's Crisis Suit built:

Tried to make him look like he was coming into land whilst firing to one side. It's my first ever attempt at dynamic poses, so it's not great but we all started somewhere eh? And he is obviously still missing his weapons.

Please feel free to offer me your opinions and thoughts.

those guard are stunning, i love the colour scheme and its executed very well indeed!

i love the tau bases, but in not a fan of the pose of the battlesuit, it looks as though hes hanging off the base so maybe set him back a bit maybe?
sorry to be so critical :(, but its not my cup of tea.

Those guard have a fantastic colour scheme, extremly striking!!

But I'm with Forgotten Hero, the battle suit's pose is a little to static for what you're trying to achieve. Maybe some leg joint bending to give it some motion?
Or step it up to the next size base, then you don't get the 'hanging of the edge' problem.

(Go back to the guard, they're cool :D )

Slipstream - September 24, 2007 11:10 PM (GMT)
Excellent work!

On, uh, the marriage and the figures! :)

I may have some leftover Guard from a previous project that might interest you. They're based, converted, and primed a nice dark brown. I'll see about digging them up, and putting them up here.

thewizardofoz - September 24, 2007 11:17 PM (GMT)
well i like the guard, but the log is for Tau, so Tau get the comments

the bases look good and the crisis conveys your plans of landing/shooting pretty well. if you try another like it, make the leg he is standing on at more of an angle with the other one, it might be better.

Tony88 - September 25, 2007 01:20 AM (GMT)
Nice work!
The new bases are nice, i might steal the idea :D

jasevx - September 25, 2007 07:57 AM (GMT)
Welcome to the madhouse!

Those guard are really looking good, gona have to see them from across the WHW table before they get squished! :P

Marovian - September 25, 2007 10:09 AM (GMT)
Been doing a little more building on the Crisis Suits for the beginning of my Tau army:

user posted image

They are now ready for undercoating. I still can't decide on a colour scheme, I think perhaps Hawk Turquoise and White, or some kind of purple. I had originally though about dark angels green and bone, but didn't want to be criticised for always painting bone. What colours do you guys reckon?

I have noted the comments about the action pose for Tau no. 1. He will be staying like that although I shall take on board what everyone has said for the future. As an aside, does anyone have any experience of repositioning Tau?

schoolcormorant - September 25, 2007 10:30 AM (GMT)
i think painting them white, with some dark green/turquoise stripes would look amazing...

bit different!

Marovian - September 27, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
Righty-ho.

In between the chores of real life, I have managed to progress the Tau army by a very small margin. First off, the bases are done:

user posted image

Quite happy with these, although had problems sticking the little pieces of slate on. Superglue seems like over kill and could get expensive, but PVA doesn't quite hold it in place. Anyway, with some repairs I think they came out alright, although don't look too close. The next ones will be loads better.

Also, I am working on two gun drones as test mini's for colour schemes. Please bear in mind these are at a very early stage, and have been rushed. So I know the paint is thick, I know the mold lines aren't gone but I want to get the two done before I go on my honeymoon so that you all have two weeks to think about which is best. That being said:

As always, comments and opinions more than welcome.

Tony88 - September 28, 2007 01:27 AM (GMT)
Nice bases.

scrubout - September 28, 2007 01:42 AM (GMT)
I prefer the blue drone, but I feel it needs some nice contrasting colored markings (something real bright and off the wall).

Perhaps a nice creme colored orange? Bases look great.

thewizardofoz - September 28, 2007 03:05 AM (GMT)
i agree with my californian friend, the blue one looks better. the plating is more distinct. the bases are great too

Catferret - September 28, 2007 03:29 AM (GMT)
The green/bone feels too Imperial Guard if that makes any sense? I think the blue fits better with the kind of anime feel that Tau have. It'll look great on the table too.

Your bases look great. A little effort really improves the overall appearance of the model. Nice work on that.

jasevx - September 28, 2007 07:39 AM (GMT)
Always difficult with drones, I've seen both colours work really well on Tau.

Marovian - September 28, 2007 10:37 AM (GMT)
I'm still have trouble deciding. Going to do more work on both drones today, and try a third. Someone has recommended a dark blue with the bone, so going to try that to. I also think I made a mistake with the green/bone. The bone should be the main colour, with the green round the edges, but I shall perservere.

Marovian - September 28, 2007 03:46 PM (GMT)
Right, probably the last post for some time, because, in a little over 48 hours, I am going to be here:

in one of these:

I have, however, been working hard on some Tau prototypes. I have come up with three colour schemes that I like:

I just can't decide which one to go for. I like the two on the left the most, but still trying to decide which one of those would look good on a whole army. Please bear in mind I would highlight the finished article, so that whole effect would be brighter as they look pretty dark at the moment.

So, what do you lot thing?

jasevx - September 28, 2007 04:37 PM (GMT)
i think you should be taking us with you!

Slipstream - September 28, 2007 05:07 PM (GMT)
I'm going to second that. Where's the Ammobunker trreehouse? I want Mai-tais! I ordered a Mai-Tai, but you didn't bring me one and then I asked again but I didn't get one, and I asked again, and I finally got one, but it didn't have the little umbrella in it, I think that if I ask for a Mai-Tai, it should come with the little umbrella...

--Brian

PS: I'm partial to the Blue and White one, but that's me. Very bright, Anime, and Gundamnit-looking. If I were to go with something I haven't SEEN before, It'd be the Blue and Cream.

dean - September 28, 2007 05:12 PM (GMT)
Jiminy Christmas... somebody give Slipstream back his red stapler before he burns the place down.

I like the blue on gray best but none of the three really apeal to me.

Catferret - September 28, 2007 05:18 PM (GMT)
I've changed my mind since earlier. I posted before I saw the blue/cream one. It's great! I vote blue/cream. It's very anime and the colours contrast well.

Althanan - September 28, 2007 07:02 PM (GMT)
The blue/bone one is the best of the three IMO, but I'm not thrilled about any of them. It'd be easier to see how the scheme would work for an army on a Firewarrior.

Lord Commander Eidolon - October 3, 2007 08:31 PM (GMT)
turqoise and white looks moer tau than the other 2

scrubout - October 3, 2007 10:26 PM (GMT)
I've changed my vote back to blue/bone...but no matter which you pick, you'll still have a cool looking army. I think the teal/blue is a bit too 'plastic' looking, even for pansy tau and the green/brown is too dull.

Marovian - October 18, 2007 12:28 PM (GMT)
I'm back!

I had a great time on my honeymoon, two weeks of doing very little but sit in the sun, drink beer, and watch the world go by. Also got in loads of snorkeling, and spent a lot of time swimming with sharks and larege sting rays, then watching them swim under our room at night whilst drunk. It was overall pretty much tropical paradise. If anyone wants to know if I would recommend the Maldives, the answer is yes!

Anyway, back to the more exciting stuff of 40K. I have managed to get a few hours in on the Tau and worked on the two Crisis Suits. I went for the bone/blue colour scheme because I though it would be interesting to paint. Here is how the Crisis Suit looks at the moment:

As you can see the model is a long way from done but gives you some idea of what it will look like when done. I am hoping to get the first two suits well progressed by Monday or Tuesday of next week so I can justify spending more money on some more Tau.

I also had my special gamers edition of Apocalypse waiting when I got back, and have been reading through it. A few friends are planning a 10,000 pts game in the not too distant future, so I will try to get pics of that if it happens.

In the mean time, please stick your thoughts and opinions of the Tau on record for me.

Ross - October 18, 2007 01:01 PM (GMT)
Nice choice of colours there Morovian, looking forward to seeing the suit done :)

jasevx - October 18, 2007 05:00 PM (GMT)
got to agree, great contrast of colours

Digits - October 18, 2007 05:19 PM (GMT)
Yup, lovely choice! Will look really flash!

Marovian - October 22, 2007 02:16 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the positive comments, gives me the will to go on.

Been working hard on the two Crisis Suits over the weekend, and they are coming along nicely. Here is the first one:

user posted image

As you can see he is still minus his weapons. I also have some minor work to be done on the model itself. I have some more work to do round the sides (which doesn't show on the photo) and it still needs some markings at the front. The lenses in the head will be done purple as a contrast but I don't have purple yet, hopefully picking it up this Thursday.

Second Suit:

user posted image

This guy is further behind, needs some more highlights then the markings, work on the sides and the lenses. He is also without his weapons.

Quite pleased with how they have turned out. However, the photos have been very kind as my highlighting is very wonky with lines all over the place, which doesn't show up.

Please feel free to pass judgement on them at you leisure.

I have also got some firewarriors on the way off of eBay, and am probably going to bag a Broadside Suit this week when I go to WHW. Pictures when I get them.

Tony88 - October 22, 2007 03:03 PM (GMT)
They look sweet man.

Deserter - October 22, 2007 03:20 PM (GMT)
Love those Guard! Tau are coming on nicely too!

Congrats on the marriage :)

scrubout - October 22, 2007 04:20 PM (GMT)
Mmmm, that's looking good.

Of course, a late congratulations is in order too.

Being back at work is really cutting back on my painting time which has meant that I am seriously behind on the two Crisis Suits. However, I have been working with what little time I have and one is now complete bar his coat of Dulcote:

user posted image

I am fairly happy with him. The purple lenses didn't go that well in the end, and I failed to notice my watered down white had dried up when doing the free hand markings on him, so they came out a little bumpy. However, overall he now gets the feel of the army across and the colour scheme has proven itself, at least to me :D

Also got 8 firewarriors in the post today that I won off of Ebay, so will be working on them in the near future. Bagged a broadside battlesuit as well, so that should soon be making an appearance as well.

In the meantime, please pass judgement on the Suit.

hiveminion - October 26, 2007 02:18 PM (GMT)
That looks excellent, the highlighting is so sharp!

MutantMaggot - October 26, 2007 02:24 PM (GMT)
Congratulations on your marriage. :)

The highlighting is really good, as is the rest -- the sharpness really fits in with tau. :)

Amazing stuff.

Marovian - October 26, 2007 02:46 PM (GMT)
I forgot to say a big thank you to those of you that congratulated me on the marriage. We had a great time, the wedding itself and the honeymoon were both superb. Thanks for all the support.

MutantMaggot - October 26, 2007 03:50 PM (GMT)
Glad to hear you had a good time. :)

Now ... get painting! :D

Marovian - October 28, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
Righty-Ho then.

As predicted, work caused everything to grind to a halt for a few days, but taking advantage of being on nights, I have completed the second Crisis Suit:

user posted image

Very happy with this guy, I think that the pose is OK, and a few of the details came out better than in the first one. I particularly happy with the lenses in his head, and I managed to cut the highlighting time down as well. I am hoping it will fall with further practice.

I have also got my mitts on some Firewarriors and a Broadside suit so they will be put together soon. My birthday is a few days away too, and I am hoping to get lots of goodies. As a result I suspect painting will take a back seat to construction, but I'll keep posting. I'm hoping to paint a test firewarrior soon though.

Please let me know what you think.

scrubout - October 28, 2007 05:44 PM (GMT)
I love it. Your color scheme blows away GW's lame poo on poo codex scheme.

I think the pose is a bit awkward, but it's a minimal issue.
