Title: Rolling thunder and 49cc of Mayhem!

charlie_c67 - November 6, 2007 12:51 AM (GMT)
Well since I've bitten the bullet and started to do some vehicles it's only right that I should start a thread here. First up are three cadian pattern sentinels which have been sprayed Peugeot Conifer green. Pictures will follow once I've finished this damned essay. In the mean time if anyone can point me in the direction of hints for weatering sentinel feet I'd be grateful.

jasevx - November 6, 2007 08:45 AM (GMT)
Bring them on Charlie! Hope you've pinned the sentinals, every single one of mine has been broken so far.

Hey, that's lookin' pretty good.

More pics!

As for weathering, I lazily splash watered down graveyard earth on the feet...simplicity, but not GD-winning.

Work done today. Just need to do some spraying of crewmen and some armour and I think we'll be done!

loads of detail im liking it. though the chair colour seems a bit srange in that paint sceme

charlie_c67 - November 9, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
Well it's Terracotta. Meant to look like a deep brown leather but something's not right with the paint. Possiblt cos it's painted onto green. I will be putting more layers on, and to be fair there'll be someone sat on it!

Deserter - November 11, 2007 06:24 PM (GMT)
Looking good so far! Any other plans for the driver? I always see Sentinels drivers as being a bit special, mine were all converted with various parts to make them look like they operated on their own for extended periods quite often.

charlie_c67 - November 12, 2007 12:01 AM (GMT)
Not for the first few, cept maybe a different head for each member of the squad to show their differing ranks. Since Sentinel drivers are supposed to be mavericks, and since these are part of the Talon recon group, the leader of this trio is one Captain "Chuck" Smith accompanied by the Sergeant Major and a Corporal. I'm gonne paint that rank on the side and maybe a coat of arms or something. How's that sound? The Cadian Sentinel has a pack and roll sheet anyway so they won't need much added to them to make them look independent. The challenge will be the Mars, Armagedddon and Kaltropp pattern ones.
Incidently, has anyone had issus with the armour bit from the cadian ones not being wide enough at the back?

Deserter - November 12, 2007 03:00 PM (GMT)
That sounds great :)

Most of my inspiration came from the Death World ones converted by Andy Chambers back in the day. Had 2 with Multilasers and 1 Heavy Flamer. Flamer guy was supposed to be a bit of a religious nutcase, had a barrel mounted on the back and stuff. Gave them extra guns and equipment.

So you have 10 altogether? I'm jealous, I have 0!

charlie_c67 - November 12, 2007 10:12 PM (GMT)
Yup, the Eagle talon pack was too good to resist! Plus I have one walking egg.
Slight revision, the first Squadron's Captain "Dick" Vaughn-Williams and the group is Rutter's Raiders.

Mordian Marauder - November 13, 2007 01:28 AM (GMT)
I love Sentinels. I've also never really thought about building them the way you have- I might try that out next time!!

By the way, did you see the twin seat Sentinel on the GW website..? It's on the right hand side. I want to build one but not sure how I'd do it!!

I don't think my Mum even knows I have to do a dissertation, let alone essays. Ooops! :D

charlie_c67 - November 13, 2007 12:41 PM (GMT)
Looking at it briefly, I'd say there's two cockpit there, one behind the other. I'd need side view to be totally sure, but I'm fairly certain I could knock something up that's quite similar. Where did you get that from? I know it's a popup but can't find the parent page.

Mordian Marauder - November 13, 2007 02:17 PM (GMT)
I'm currently in the process of attempting to build a copy of that Sentinel...I have a gap between the cockpits so it'll be something of a challenge.

charlie_c67 - November 15, 2007 05:08 PM (GMT)
And so I take a tiny baby-step forward after having IPLU obliterate my life. Everything I need is now undercoated. However I need you the AB public to choose the heads of Dick Vaughn-Williams and his Sentinel squad. The options are A: Cadian Helmet and goggles, B:Flying helmet no goggles or C: Flying helmet goggles and chinstrap. If you put your answers as three letters e.g. ABC for the corresponding characters Cptn D V-W, RSM H. Purcell, CPL E. Coates. This includes you Bram!

Deserter - November 15, 2007 09:48 PM (GMT)
Cptn D V-W, A
RSM H. Purcell, C
CPL E. Coates, B

I love Andy Hoare's sentinels. Shall I try and score 10 off ebay? :)

charlie_c67 - November 17, 2007 06:07 PM (GMT)
So, do any of you guys know how to paint goggles properly?

charlie_c67 - November 18, 2007 01:02 AM (GMT)
Gah! Know it's a double post but...piccy time!

M'eh! Triple post now. But I guess that's what happens when people don't comment...

As the first walker draws to a close I have to admit I'm finding myself a little disappointed with the metal casting and some of the design points. First up is the equipment pack, Whoever designed it didn't take into account the movement of the legs and where they actually go when the right leg is forward. Suffice to say I have had to play around with positioning a little to make it acceptable. Secondly, and more importantly, the extra armour casting is crap. It comes in two parts, neither of which a wide enough and doesn't sit flush to the plastic making glueing an issue. Perhaps I've been spoilt working with mainly plastic in the past but I would've expected better than this. It does mean I will have to green stuff more than I expected/hoped and with another two to go I'm a little worried it'll get too frustrating when the time comes.

Pics will appear here this evening.

You smart arse Charlie....

Thats how to paint the interior of a sentinel.

That is it, that is the answer.

And it looks tops mate, although it would be remiss of me not to say
WEATHER TEH FOOK OUT O' IT!

:)

Your sentinel is looking good Charlie, don't get down on the posts..besides, a strategically placed bid for attention like you just did usually does wonders to get scum like SC and me to post asap! :)

I'll be looking for the other pics. As for painting goggles, the IG codex does have a decent lens tutorial when it shows what colours they used for the leman russ.

Well, this is as far as this particular Sentinel is going. Cept maybe some little details. The reason being they're all going to need GSing so I might as well wait and do them as a job lot. So the last pic (for now) of Captain Dick Vaughn-Williams

Update, and a problem, why's the bleached bone on the base streaking even though it's gotta basecoat?

user posted image

schoolcormorant - December 1, 2007 08:36 AM (GMT)
Could be a couple of reasons:
1) The paint was too thin?
2) You've not wiped enough off the brush for the drybrush layer?
3) You're using too small a drybrush?

Essentially you need to wipe enough paint off that when you drag it over the surface it does nothing, once you spend about 5mins of 'doing nothing' results will begin to show :)

The surface is not 100% apt for drybrushing anyway, I used a similar surface for the base on my Raven Guard Standard Bearer and it took a long time to get anywhere with it :)

The streak of paint on the edge of the base tells me you've probably had too much paint on the brush...

charlie_c67 - December 1, 2007 01:55 PM (GMT)
I'm not drybrushing it though. This is paint on brush to base the normal way.

MutantMaggot - December 1, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
Paint not mixed up fully, or simply odd paint? I sometimes find that my yellow does that -- ie. the producer has mixed the wrong quantity of water in the paint when creating it.

Savvy?

MM :)

Hmm, can't help you, but I feel your pain. Streaky paint sucks the big ones.

Glad to see you still plugging away at your sentinels.

I like the markings on the side of it's cab, it's busy, but not too cluttered in my opinion.

I'd try and straighten out that light blue stripe on the side, but other than that, looks very good. I'm looking forward to your next update, even if it is two months away!
