Title: Industrial Terrain
Description: and other terrain by Digits.

We have a great compo going on at the moment building industrial tank farms, but here's one I'm doing at the moment.

The dished ends are available in resin from Ainsty Castings (Black Crow?) and are particularly useful at turning any deodrant / aurosol can / mothwash bottle or sweet tube into something realistic. (comes in a couple of sizes)

Sat up last night sticking corrugated panels to a cheesy bites can whilst watchinh the instantly forgettable Starship Troopers 2 - Hero of the Federation!!

yet to add some form of safety fencing on top, access ladders and such. I freely admit that for ultimate realism, there would be a hell of a lot of pipework all over it, but I'm also realistic in that as a gaming piece, I just need to represent it! A couple of strawers will service the two smaller vessels.

very cool, indeed, but what is that wall doing there?
its out of place imho and it should rather be a fence or something

Galikoe3 - November 3, 2007 11:14 PM (GMT)
There is a diesel tank in my work that has something similar to it, The wall is used as a spill tray for the fuel. Very cool terrain piece, I like it a lot.

Would really like to see it painted with a couple of minis fighting over it, very cool.

Digits - November 4, 2007 10:41 AM (GMT)
It's called a "bund". Tanks farms / storage tanks often have such a feature. If there is a spill or catastrophic leak, the wall will contain the fluid until it can be disposed of appropriately, instead of just running into the storm drains. Added to which, it makes for a good defensive position!

I've pictured it here against another I made. You can see clearly how the spill has been contained.

Both of these will complement this small processing plant. I need to add a few more pipes and I'm thinking of adding some hand railing at some future point. But it does make for interesting gaming areas.

The large tank in the finished bunded area is a toilet systen ball. Check out B&Q for a few great shapes!
Again, use of the Ainsty dished ends as well as oil storage tanks (in the bunded area) and small generator (red thing) are by them.

A few bits of gubbins and a quick spray of undercoat, and you get the picture.

Awesome terrain pieces, Digits B) :)

Cheers Firestorm.

WIP painting shot. Don't normally do this but very pleased with my rust effect on the cladding sheets around the large tank.

Thats some sweet terrain mate ,and the rust is looking cool ;)

Little tip if you are using water effect. It does NOT do what it says on the bottle!!!! 24 hours later and it's still not set!

As soon as it is, a couple of hours will see this finished.

Whilst waiting for it to set, I made a start on this.

Can you tell what it is yet? (daft Oz voice)

Electricity substation or pumphouse?

thewizardofoz - November 5, 2007 11:14 PM (GMT)
it is something that will be defensible.....

and is that GW water effects?

Digits - November 6, 2007 08:55 AM (GMT)
It will be defensible (sand bag emplacement to left of gate). Fenced off area incorporating storage tanks (by Ainsty - when they arrive) and a storage compound. I have a lot of storage cylinders / boxes etc which often look silly plonked on the battlefield on their todd! This should give them purpose.

Wiz - yup - GW water effect. Awoke this morning and it's still runny!

I used to use clear varnish (did a load of paddy fields with it) and it worked a charm. This stuff is a bit of a con!

Stagger_Lee - November 6, 2007 09:12 AM (GMT)
How much water effect did you put on? It needs to be built up gradually in thin layers.

The advantage of GW water effect is that kids can use it safely and it's easier to clean than varnish.

Veteran hobbyists can make use of alternatives while younger folk just starting out can't. Some parents don't want there kids using varnish.

So rather than saying it's a con, just say it doesn't suit your needs.

The tank farm looks great though. Very impressive.

Digits - November 6, 2007 09:31 AM (GMT)
Stagger - you on commission? :P

It says to do in in 2-3mm layers. I put in approx 3mm so suspected it might take a little longer. The bottle does say that at this depth it will dry in 24 hours. I've used it before (see the tank farm above) and this was an even thinner layer. It still took a couple of days.

One tip for using this (or varnish) for anyone, is to make sure your drying surface is perfectly flat. Seems obvious I know, but even moving the model mid way through drying can upset the layer.

Not exactly.

I apologise if my post came across as rude.

I just have to deal with people being negative about GW a lot and it can get a bit tedious.

Digits - November 6, 2007 09:42 AM (GMT)
No problem mate, generally I am a big supporter of GW! Christ, I spend enough on them! I've been collecting / supporting since the first edition. I didn't think you were being rude, just very defensive (thought you'd invented the stuff! lol)

I was very negative about rough coat, but now I've mastered being able to use a tin more than once, I love the stuff!

Was really putting the reference to Water Effect up as a modelling tip. Just expect it to take a little longer than suggested. I don't know, but maybe putting it up in a warm room (airing cupboard?) may speed it up.

bram kuijpers - November 6, 2007 09:46 AM (GMT)
hey digits i might got something for ya, could you make a terain piece a hanger or production line with some kind of tank or walker being putt together?

Digits - November 7, 2007 05:49 PM (GMT)
You never know!

Anyway, this tank farm is finished! The liquid is still setting and is still a little opaque but I'm sure this will sort itself in time

What do you think?

I think if you were a contestant in your own contest you wouldn't have to send off those 2 boxes of kasrkin.

Awesome Digits. ;)

Cheers bud! I'd be disqualified though as the base isn't big enough! :D

mummoose69 - November 7, 2007 07:20 PM (GMT)
Digits, the rust on your terrain piece looks great, and i think the painting effects you've used on the whole piece works extremely well. (yes i know i'm being nice, i hate warhammer, but i actually love to see the terrain sets being built from scratch out of junk) ;)

Digits - November 7, 2007 07:34 PM (GMT)
Why thanks Sal!!!! From you, high praise indeed ;)

Digits - November 7, 2007 09:55 PM (GMT)
Right, the next one!

Just discovered I can do this! Really excited about his very simple terrain piece. Going to be a storage yard with some fuel storage tanks. Will paint the fencing/barbed wire rusty too.

Digits - November 7, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
Cheers mate! I'm gonna call it "DigiWire" ! :D

Digits - November 8, 2007 12:09 AM (GMT)
Christ! Threading that wire was a pain in the backside! But, I think it looks great! Last bit on this tonight as I now have to wait for the milliput to harden before sanding it. Will start on the gates tomorrow.

Digits - November 8, 2007 12:18 AM (GMT)
Deadley, I'm going to use a square piece of plastic sprue for the frame, overlay mesh, then weld a tube to the side like a post hinge. Should do the trick! Need to make some keep out signs.

Will add sand tomorrow, then paint it over the weekend. Unfortunately, my tanks (and other goodies) have only just been ordered. Old Crow doesn't tend to be the fastest of deliverers! Then again, they may suprise me!

Cheers mate.

SC - Cheers bud!

christ mate thats looks amazing, an imperial guard P.O.W camp, i bet heretics and mutants are fairly treated in that! anyway what is it ment to be? secure parkig for the discerning gentlemans chimera?

Severian - November 8, 2007 09:36 AM (GMT)
You would definitely have been a menace if you had competed in the competition mate :) The terrain looks really nice, give us a shot of a few of your pieces on the table?

Digits - November 8, 2007 11:59 AM (GMT)
Kev - Cheers, no just a storage compound. I like the idea of a POW compound complete with watch towers! mmmm........

Sev - Cheers buddy! :D - I'll set up piccies soon - promise.

bram kuijpers - November 8, 2007 12:14 PM (GMT)
since it is a storage place are you gonna make pallets? or something

cause lifting tons of extremly expensie equipment with bare hands isnt realy working.

Lord Commander Eidolon - November 8, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
i second sev

Digits - November 8, 2007 11:39 PM (GMT)
Updates! Added sand and some gates! I will paint this next then paint and add the tanks / gubbins when it arrives.

Couldn't think of an easy lock mechanism, so notice the chain awaiting a padlock!

2 of these

http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/ainsty/a5933.jpg

And a stockpile of fancy sci fi storage containers.

Thanks to Bram, I'm also thinking of adding a FW sentinel loader!

Deadley Hedley - November 8, 2007 11:54 PM (GMT)
I like the idea of you adding the FW sentinal loader but what type of storage is it Ammo or fuel ?
