Title: Refinery Table
Description: Boy, those Promethium Tanks 'splode gud!

Slipstream - October 14, 2007 05:58 PM (GMT)
Okay, here's a general Terrain thread, seperate from my Project log, to follow the progress of my Refinery Table.

The general idea, here, is an Imperial Promethium refinery, on an outworld somewhere. Not as complicated as one of the Forge World refineries, but enough to process Promethium for the local Guard and Imperial Interests ™.

I like building tables that aren't ruined, because I like taking objectives that are INTACT. ;) This table will be, primarily, blocking terrain, allowing Close Combat units cover, but also providing "Fire Lanes" for the Gunlines.

As with most of my table designs, I am building modular, and following the 25% rule. Since local tables are 4x6, this means that I am building enough terrain to completely fill a 2x3 rectangle.

The first piece, the cracking station that breaks the raw petrochemical product into various grades of oils, looks a little like this:

The second piece is a series of gradiation tanks, which are used to process several types of oil, as well as the other liquid ingredients, into that glorious fuel known as Promethium.

More pictures, as work progesses:

Here you can see the 'front' of the piece. Don't worry too much about bulges or glue spots. You'll have plenty of time to do touchups with putty, or paint. For this piece, any superglue bulges or other deformities will be used to make rust spots and other chemical spills.

Here, the initial spray has been applied. This is GW's boltgun metal spraypaint, over a krylon spray primer.

Now, painting the base with glue. I mix up a 50/50 glue/water mix, and then add a few drops of chestnut ink. The resulting brown [colour] hides any missed patches of ground flock.

Finally, the base, flocked.

After the glue dries, it'll be onto painting and final flocking.

Damn you knock these buildings up quick :)
Looking good man.

Okay, here's the finished product.

Decals are applied over a gloss coat, fixed with Solvaset (a decal setting lfuid that helps blend the edges in, and makes plastic decals handle corners well. VERY useful for space marine shoulder pads.

Colors are inks over boltgun metal. The chemspills are chestnut ink, the red band is red ink.

Decals are more of my custom-printed ones.

Any questions? Ask! All of these terrain pieces, save for the chip trays, are made with household products, or easily attainable plasticard. :)

I am always looking for new ideas or even explanations on how to make the buildings I want so a big thank you.

awesome building.

Very nice work.

Are you making the bases of these terrain pieces of a specific size? Are they meant to fit together in a modular fashion?

Not to be considered offensive, but the simplicity of this terrain is really impressive.

That's the goal, Scrub. Easy to make, looks good, and very little $$$, since, you know, gotta spend money on Apocalypse/DKoK. ;)

I've got a 2x3 rectangle masked out, Hespithe, as per the previous post. I'm filling that Rectangle, and then the pieces are just places 'wherever' on the board. I'm not making anything a specific size, per-se. Just designing it so that it, when collapsed, guarantees a 25% Terrain Table ™.

Really nice work I have to say. Amazingly simple, you should definately do some tuts. It really looks nice and cheap and like something most people could do if given the proper instruction. So are these for a personal game room?
