Title: McBains SpaceWolves
Description: Project Log ><

McBain - May 7, 2008 10:24 AM (GMT)
*I have decided to move my log from The seer place to here ><*

I have been pouring over every army book I could get my hands on in the attempt to find a suitable army.
For years I have been trying to find that original spark that I originally
loved all those years ago, the thing that got my into 40k in the first place. After an massive clear out I had my army.

Space Wolves, not just any space wolves but my original army…

Some of you here may remember White Dwarf no 158 from February 1993 this issue contained not only the first true Wolves models
but the original profiles for Ragnar, Ulrik and Njal. In this issue was a Rogue Trader battle report containing at the time 1998
points worth of models. I bought this army deal for the large amount of £49 it contained full squads of Blood Claws, Grey Hunters,
Long Fangs, Wolf Guard along with all the character models. All that lead for the same as a modern battle force oh how things have changed.

Now as this is the first post of my log I thought I would show you the current assembled troops complete with circa 1993 paint jobs.

Firts up we have my planned Hq, Wolf Lord Gunnar with his Wolf Guard squad.

Now step one is obviously to get all these stripped back to bare metal so that my mad green stuff plans can be tried.

Wolf Guard: All terminators will have a wolves pelt complete with trophy head on there armour. They will all have green stuff tails and teeth decorating there armour to show there years of fighting.

Grey Hunters: some wolves pelts and tails nothing to much except on there pack leader who will be decorated as a member of the wolf guard.

Blood Claws: As the youngest members of the company they will have few extra details added, mostly knives and weapons.

Long Fangs: Slightly complicated as I am fitting the new style weapons to rouge trader era bodies, the conversion can work its just takes some creative green stuffing. These models will also be decorated with wolf pelts and teeth.

Wolf Scouts: no idea it’s a crazy unit, maybe just go for a sniper squad.

So far this represents my plan I have no army list on paper but I have one in mind, im just going to make the army I always wanted way back in 1993 but as you can see my painting wasn’t quite up to it.

Right i spent all last night stripping the paint of the models and cleaning them up, and stripping them.

The blood claws are now assembled and as soon as the green stuff dries they will be ready for painting, there are 10 but i just wanted to show you a few of them.

Thats how you open a log! Great to see the old minis getting a new lease of life!

charlie_c67 - May 7, 2008 10:33 AM (GMT)
Good start! Though may I suggest a little black lining? For instance between the arms and torso, more to give definition than anything else and to help sort out where the joints are!

McBain - May 7, 2008 10:33 AM (GMT)
Well it was a copy and paste job from the other place as it attracted no interest at all...

Yeah that sorta thing will follow once all the models are painted to this standard... need a game and im refusing to play with un painted models.

Ah.. Another old fart... I have that issue of WD.. It had epic rules for all the SW characters too... (i think) I liked that batrep because they called the Wolf Guard "Mini Dreadnoughts" and split them up across the table.

Good to see some 2nd ed minis getting redone. Mine are going to become a Consecrators squad.

Send your Champion over for the ritual duel and let's get to smiting the enemies of the Emperor.

Nife - May 7, 2008 01:04 PM (GMT)
I've got that White Dwarf somewhere - inspired me to start my space wolves. Love the old models too (sold all mine :( )...

Cracking start here - good gaming standard. Looking forward to more.

:)

titan136 - May 7, 2008 01:09 PM (GMT)
holy hell thats a lot of lead. glad to see you painting some of it. logs are great inspiration. before you know it, you'll be down to half a bucket of minis!

McBain - May 7, 2008 01:39 PM (GMT)
Well i should be able to paint one squad a week so in a bout a month i will have them all done.

Im going to start knocking up my re done wolf lord as a way to relieve the repetition of painting the same model 5 times ><

Deserter - May 7, 2008 02:45 PM (GMT)
Welcome to the board mate, looking forward to seeing these progress!

We actually allow more than 4 pics per post, its something like 12 pictures, so you don't need to double-post if you're posting more than 4 pics at a time! Thought it might help :)

McBain - May 7, 2008 03:03 PM (GMT)
While i was looking for parts for my wolf lord i found some old models for you guys to look at :)

Lets see how many you can name.....

I see Dwarf Monitors, Ironclads, Nataulis' and Dreadnoughts. I think you also have the bones of a Empire Greatship, and some bombards. Is that a Norse long ship I spy too?

Nice work on the Wolves by the way, will be interesting to see how it all develops.

Now excuse me, having seen that lot, I'm going to buy shares in Halfords Brake Fluid :P

ok so you have named most of the dwarf fleet

The empire ones are not right.

Norse longship is right.

I have way more stuff to strip that just wolves, i have original Sob, Catachans, Praetorians amongst a lot of other stuff...

dean - May 7, 2008 03:24 PM (GMT)
Nah. That "greatship" is a Bret Galleon, dont remember what the little Bret ships are and the galleys are Empire IIRC.

And the far right are some epic Valhallan Bassies. :P

McBain - May 7, 2008 05:21 PM (GMT)
not bad were getting there

the_great_gonzo - May 7, 2008 09:02 PM (GMT)
good start to the log, makes me wish I hadn't gotten rid of all my old stuff years ago, sniff!

I like your avatar too, he is the spit of my late grandad, a 'wegie and proud (if a little drunk!).

KayvaanShrike - May 7, 2008 09:12 PM (GMT)
Cool models. Didn't think the plastic arms would work well with the metal bodies, but they aren't too bad.

Good job all round.

Good job all round.

That was the fear i had, the plastic arms bulk out the models a little bit and to be honest i live the look of them.

The only issue is going to be the long fangs rogue trader bodies with crrent edition metal arms... some green stuff i think.

Wow...

Loving your wolves. The jump pack claws are looking phenominal.

What are the ships from? An early precurser to Warmaster?

Ah young one let me tell you a story........

Once there was a game called Man 'O' War a game of mighty naval combat among the warhammer races. Most of the races had there own fleets and rules and to this day it remains one of my fave GW games.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/2516 all will be explained

could argue they were the first chapter to get there own codex and that makes then the original marine army in terms of support ><

Digits - May 8, 2008 09:27 PM (GMT)
Great work so far. What did you use to strip the paint?

McBain - May 8, 2008 09:36 PM (GMT)
I got some pure acetone from a hairdressers supply place for about £3.00 so far i have used 3/4 of the bottle to strip the Blood Claws, Grey Hunters, Long Fangs x 2 and wolf guard.

Its great for all metals especially the old lead ones.

freebooter - May 8, 2008 10:23 PM (GMT)
Space Puppies have always been my fave, thats for sure...

Who can beat the coolness of vikings in space with wolves? :D

The black rims look much better. They're how I do all my bases. Looks so much cleaner and can blend in on almost any tabletop...

Keep 'em up sir!
