I may be ranting a little, but technology is irritating me no end at the moment.

My PC is getting on a bit and has developed an intermittant problem, I turn it on and it refuses to boot, go into setup and it can't find the harddrive/DVD/Processor. Reboot it and the same happens, unplug at the wall and the same happens. To fix it switch off at the wall, switch on and then reboot - well 9 times out of 10 anyway

So the PC is annoying, but I can live with it, the second thing is that the remote for my stereo seems to have stopped completely, I've changed the batteries, cleaned the lens and the receiver on the stereo, even dismantled it to look for loose connections - nothing.
Usually I wouldn't care, it's the stereo in my bedroom, I can reach it without getting out of bed - except the remote has more buttons than the main unit, the main one I need is the one to turn on/turn off/set the clock radio. So rather than waking up to music/the news I'm stuck with the harsh beeping of my phone

yep i agree with you, i live in essex and i can't get digital tv, the pc has decided that turning off is an ancient mystical art and does it 1 time out of 10 and yesterday firefox decided to reset itself losing all my bookmarks and passwords, took about 3 hours to get them all back again and to top it all off the ipod died for no good reason 1 month out of warranty

yet the old xbox seems to keep going having been dropped, stolen by my mates and having a coffee spilt on it, so it's not all bad

Working IT I see this everyday (not the fault on your PC, just Technology being crap!). half my work load is taken by PC's not doing as they are supposed to, and after fault finding there is nothing wrong......

I work with an aircraft that is quite old now, and the technology will randomly stop working for, quite often, no good reason. some times you can give it a good hit, other times just a simple off and on. But other times it just wont come on again and then you cant fly. Rubbish

You clearly all havent been praying to the omnissah...

The three sacred strikes will often reinvigorate the machine spirit long enough to get it working again, and a quick word of encouragement will often ensure adequate processing times and productivity.

All hail the Omnissah! It is his willl that my mobile gets stuck on vibrate after a call, his will that my xbox controller constantly has spinning lights, and his will that my Ipod (Terrance) randomly stops working - praise be to the Omnissahh!

the Omnissiah can go and jump off a cliff (self censored :) ), if my computer has a machine spirit then i'm sure its a copy from a 1986 Yugo with the good parts of 80's yugoslav technology taken out and given to my washing machine

 Yep, us tech priests call it the 15mm drop test

After that we get the chief tech in and he hits it with something close to Sigmars Warhammer, only bigger!

I didn't work through 4 years of of Mechanical Engineering just to let anyone go around hitting stuff to fix it - it's an artform, you have to know exactly what size of hammer to use

Actually that's even more true than it sounds - first day of work experience at Uni I was dead impressed to be told that there were bit of Eurofighter being worked on, which meant I was even more shocked to see a guy in overalls smacking a bit of engine with a hammer to loosen it!

The remote appears to have got better.

It sat on my desk for a day without being touched and now it works.

Odd.

I'm going with either nanotechnology incorporated into it has mended it, or I'm the last Cylon and giving off some kind of intermittent EMP

Nothing better than a good old 'percussion adjustment' to fix aircraft, even spiffing new Eurofighters

My PC has the ability to suddenly freeze and then do the same as windows boots about 6/10 times then it boots and when I log in, it freezes again and we start all over again.

I have a new laptop running windows Vista. When it's in the mood it seems to default to running at 100% processor usage, even when I'm doing nothing but running the background programmes.
It also has an annoying habit of blue-screen of deathing multiple times per evening, generally if I[m trying to get it to play something on youtube and maybe one other task.
Ok, it may have been a cheap laptop, but that's just stupid.

Sorry, rant over; my problems actually seem quite minor compared to the few I've seen here :(

Not to turn this into a Vista bashing sesion but my Dad recently bought a new PC with Vista running. After a while it lost it's amazing speediness - and checking the task manager it was using about 80% of the 1Gb of RAM while sitting idle. So he added another 1Gb - now when idle it's only using about 70%!

Spyware is NOT your friend. Try downloading the free version of Avast and scanning it (and yes, let it run a boot-time scan). Best inexpensive virus scanner I've found, and believe me, as a computer tech I've tried as many as I can find :P

"Oh you complete and utter bastard!" - my exact words this morning as I discovered the remote has packed up again!

appart from my tesco DVD player being louder than my TV when its on and my computer blue screening for no reason every other week technology seems to like me. unless that technology is called CD cases, as when stood on they brake too easily. i am currently refusing to change my PC for a vista one, as XP works perfectly well most of the time and besides, Dawn of War wont play on vista for me.
another good anti spyware/anti virus is AVG. ive just got the new free edition and it pulled up a lot of stuff, even though i had a couple of checks a day with the older edition

Althanan - May 20, 2008 11:51 PM (GMT)
AVG is OK. I use it as my secondary (believe me, having two anti-virus/anti-spyware programs is a good thing). What I really like from them is their anti-spyware suite. Best one out there outside of Webroot IMO.
