So have you ever woken up and just hated everything darling? .... Neither have I but I got to thinking that a modular table top would be a nice thing especially as I wanted something with a bit of tarmac on it. My current table was made of cast off planks that were joined together and then given a topping of wood glue and sand, instant desert. Worked a charm but it is a bit hard on the models and the thing is heavy as hell (am I allowed to say that here? :o ) The surface looks like this

It currently serves as my painting/modeling table

So I decided to do a new lighter table top, with benefits. I made a frame of some regular 38x38 timber and fixed a sheet of Masonite, hardboard,MDF or whatever it is called where you reside. This was configured into a table top and painted black like so :

and it is usable in this format. Here it as in the aftermath of a battle with one of my mates

This however was not the initial plan. This was the plan

Six 2 x 2 foot squares of Masonite and on this I would produce a modular road surface which could be swapped around, obviously some spare tiles also need to be made but only six will be used at any one time. Not having a table saw at my disposal was a bit of a pain in the posterior but with the use of the Masonite itself and some c-clamps I devised a cutting guide so the figure saw could be utilized

The creative use of some garden furniture also played its part. So power tools were utilized and no serious injuries were sustained. Not by me anyway :D

The tiles fit albeit not perfectly (yet) and it seems as though success is on the horizon for our brave hobby enthusiast :P

This is where I am now, the tiles need to be sanded along the edges to ensure a proper fit and then I start with the roads themselves before we go to painting. Anybody have any ideas for producing the curb stones?

I'll post some more as soon as I get some more work done

How about the small mdf tiles used for basing 6 & 15 mm historical figures. There are plenty of people sell them but they are very useful. and would make great curbs.

Good idea Digits, thanks. Was also thinking of going with some terracotta modeling clay. Just roll out in a long sheet, cut and texture and viola!

Will let you know how it turns out,

Mighty Dwarf King Wolverine The table looks awesome mate. Really good work. My tabletop is not as ambitious, just flat surface with some tarmac that can be configured in different ways.

Decided on the clay to manufacture the curb stones

It works very easily and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. For the mass production a "mold" was required to speed things up so came up with this

The clay is then rolled like so

and introduced to the mold and then trimmed of the excess

Then remove carefully from the mold and sculpt on the individual bricks and quickly give some texture and leave to dry (texture doesn't show as nice on the photos)

I'll post more when all the board are done and we get the asphalt texture on. Work is keeping me pretty busy at the moment so the project is a bit stop and start at the moment
