Title: bdo´s ultramarines
Description: well.. the title says it... smurf power!

bdo - April 24, 2008 04:31 AM (GMT)
hi there,

my name is bdo (in real life people call me marius), 24 years old from germany and here to show my ultramarines :D

yes... right..the forever-on-the-internet-hated-and-dreaded-blue-box-art-heroes, ultramarines :P

i have about 5000 pts, and another 1000 pts or so to put together...

the sad part is, only a part of it is painted, and only a part of the painted minis is to my liking... here are the pics so you can see what i have to do:

miniatures still on sprues:

those are 59 marines, sorry for the blurry pic, but i think thats not much of a worry.

here we have the (partially) assembled marines & transports:

82 marines and 13 vehicles (actually only 12, one rhino made the transformation to a vindicator and is almost finished).

and now the painted, but not to well painted stuff that needs a solid base colour and highlighting... and detail work... and pimping... :D

here we have the painted rest....

and here we have the other half of the painted rest... only the close combat terminators are finished, as is the honourguard ancient..

the rest is numberwise 80 marines and 5 vehicles....

thats how it stands at the moment... i will update this log with stuff i already photographed (the close combat termis  and an attack bike) very soon...

jasevx - April 24, 2008 08:12 AM (GMT)
Decent size army already, any chance of close ups on the painted guys?

the_great_gonzo - April 24, 2008 08:36 AM (GMT)
YAY more 3rd company! Thank god you stayed away from yellow/gold of 2nd company, most people would think 2nd is the size of the old Legion it gets that much attention!

That is a hell of a lot of marines to wade through! From the pics it appears you are another sky blue UM painter! Can you detail your technique to painting the blue?

bdo - April 24, 2008 08:06 PM (GMT)
jasevx: of course.. here are some close ups:

this was the first model i really tried to highlight.. i am not happy with the sword and may go back to it one day

and here we have the terminators - my pinacle of painting quality up to now. i want to paint every single mini in this army to at least this standard (yes... touch ups here and there are needed, especially the skulls - as revealed by the pictures):

here is a shot of them a little farther away...

in the first post, second picture you can see a started bike.. it is an attack bike which only needs basing now. the bike is attached with a magnet to the base so i can use it as either normal bike or attack bike.

the_great_gonzo: 3rd company rocks! thats just the way it is. but oh well, i will do the 4th company, too :D

here is how i do the blue:
1) basecoat black
2) paint all armor areas midnight blue (watered down.. several layers..)
3) take a big drybrush and start to drybrush all parts that have to be in ultramarine blue... it takes several layers to get a nice finish (maybe just painting on would be faster....). thats how i do it...

the highlights are just 3 step highlights consisting of ultramarine blue / ice blue 2:1 then ultramarine blue / ice blue 1:1 then pure ice blue. all watered down of course :)

i will add more pictures soon - you all can look forward to my vindicator :)

Looking good there mate! Look forward to more of these :)

KayvaanShrike - April 24, 2008 09:36 PM (GMT)
The newer stuff is really good, you can see where you have improved your painting, always good to see how someone has improved with time and practice. I like the highlighting, its very smooth, and well done. I think once things have bases on them, they will look really good. The lack of bases brings them down a bit just now, but that doesn't mean your painting isn't good!

Kurai - April 24, 2008 09:53 PM (GMT)
I was about to comment how I like your thunder hammers and storm shields when my comp crashed. So here's another try. They look great!

Bertiboy - April 24, 2008 09:58 PM (GMT)
i agree there XD the thunder hammers and storm shields look awesome. around 6000 pts worth of an army O.O would love to see some pics of that amount of minis all painted ;) keep it up dude XD

Severian - April 25, 2008 04:50 AM (GMT)
Aaah! I'm loving the wave of blue I see. The terminators are very nice mate and I really like the effects on the power weapons. As previously mentioned though you need to properly base them. Come on, models painted to that standard deserves the extra effort, you know it!

Looking forward to seeing more of these B)

bdo - April 25, 2008 05:37 AM (GMT)
charlie_c67: thanks :) - you will see more, i guaranty it

Kurai: thanks alot, those were a pain to do... i wonder how the effect will look like on a power fist....mhh....

Bertiboy: i really would like to see that, too :D - but it is indeed my plan to paint it all! *manical laughter*

i also have a problem parting with miniatures

KayvaanShrike & Severian: you are both right, these have to be based... but right now i am pretty tired, tomorrow shall await basement (the grammar gods dont like it, ey? tell them to learn to paint blue!) :)

and thanks for your kind words...

this forum is amazing.. it motivates a lot to get replies for a change (now i just need to find the time to comment on other peoples work...).

for the bases... here is a teaser:

the vindi is far from finished.. a lot of touch ups on the details and well, details left to do. i also wanted to try and paint a freehand on the dozerblade, let's see how this will turn out.

Fortier - April 25, 2008 06:29 AM (GMT)
Those bases are looking great.

Maelstrom - May 2, 2008 08:25 AM (GMT)
These are looking really good dude, as kayvaan says you can see how your painting has improved.

I'm loving the lightning effects on the power sword and thunder hammers, and your highlights are really neat and crisp, keep up the good work :D

Azmodai - May 2, 2008 09:37 AM (GMT)
I've got the complete DA 3rd coy minus vehicles...
You must have a complete Ultramarines coy including all the vehicle support they would ever need

Like your paint job.

Awww, ultramarines, my first love. the termis look fantastic. as does the vindi. what are you planning for the chapter symbol? freehand or transfers?

bdo - May 5, 2008 07:08 AM (GMT)
sorry for the long delay of this update.. but life has been complicated and i had not time to do a lot.. just a little bit. unforunately the bases have made no progress, but it won´t be too long until that is the case.

so i started to paint the dozerblade, black and white warning stripes can give a real headache... why thell hell is it so hard to paint sharp edges on curved surfaces?

those stripes are not yet finished, as they need proper yellow and not just iyanden darksun.. i also painted one of the lenses on the targetting (only the left one... ) array, as i hate lenses i think it turned out okay.. the pictures show where i forgot to clean up the highlights...

regarding the planned freehand.. look a little below and there is the explanation why it isn´t finished yet :D

Fortier: thanks a lot :) soon there will be some more

Maelstrom: i have to thank you, too :) it´s always good to hear if people like the stuff i have painted :)

Azmodai: i don´t know if i have enough vehicles.. i have enough transporters, okay; but i need more tanks :D for both of the companies i will be doing the plan is to have 3 whirlwinds, 3 (or 4, not sure right now) predators and 3 vindicators... also i need drop pods when those are released plus one, two.. or about 5 thunderhawks.. but that´s a pipe dream until gw releases an affordable one.

titan136: glad you like em :) the chapter symbol is giving me a hard time right now. i want to avoid transfers at all costs.. so i have to resort to freehand, which i have never done before.. (hey.. do the not even finished stripes, which are to see in this update, count?). it will be an simple ultramarine symbol with golden edges and a little 3d effect if i can do it. there should be a laurel behind it when it´s done.... although i have no idea how to do that.. guess i have to skim the net for exactly that.. shouldn´t be too hard to find... and then i can start.

or i should just make a concept sketch before with the right measurings...

and now for the update part, here are the pictures:

i also found this "upgrade".. wonder what the marines will say when i give it to them? :D

so.. thats it for today.. i hope i can be faster with the next update.

Looking really good mate, the clean lines really suit the "smurfs", not really my cup of tea, i prefer a bit of weathering.

Keep up the good work.
