Title: Imperial Guard - A few questions!
High Marshal Helbrecht - April 18, 2008 09:14 PM (GMT)
I've been thinking of making a small Imperial Guard army.
If its possible, could anyone give me the pro's and con's of an imperial guard army?
What's the differences between Space Marines and Imperial Guard?
Are they fun to build and paint?
Thanks. :D

Guard hmm? I've only ever had one box of catachans, and thats it for guard for me :P
But there are more, and they're very different to marines both on and off the table ;)
I found them fun to paint, all that flesh made a nice change to constantly painting the same colour armour over and over...
so id say go for it ;)

We are the true warriors of the Emperor.
We are the hammer.
We are the anvil.
We are humanity.
With lasgun and flak armor
With bayonet and song
With duty and honor
We are the Imperial Guard!
IG are, in my opinion, one of the most characterful races in the game. So many options for building and converting its rediculous. The cadians, with all their FW gear can have near unlimited looks. Then there are the nutters who collect all metal forces like me and my vostroyans...uh...
Guard are not space marines and can't be used that way. They rely on sheer numbers and a good distribution of tanks. Suffice to say, you must be willing to go on the long haul when it comes to painting. My log has been going on for a year and a half...late 2006 to now... and I'm still not done.
If you love uniformity, then guard are for you. With techniques like dipping, you can get a force done in a relatively short period of time.
Be warned, once you jump into collecting guard, there's no going back!

yeah there is :P lol
but yeah, guard seem cool... i wanna give em a shot at some point... after my daemons, necrons, chaos and vampires that is ;)

guards are the race for half-experienced people, and need some skill to play with as well as paint... (some models are harder to paint than others, atleast in my head)
i have 2 guard armies and i love them.

Yeah, you must be in for the long haul, the sheer mas of infantry can slog you down when painting. That being said I would not trade my 2 1/2 guard armies, they are basicly the heart of my 40k armies.

Nor do they have to be as uniform as some make out! IMHO, there are many more conversion opportunities available to a plastic guard collector. It should be possible to have a almost limitless number of poses. OK, one can argue the paint scheme should be fairly uniform and I do concede that BUT they are a lot more forgiving than painting crisp looking marines or Eldar!
As others have said, tanks! Tanks and more tanks! Irrespective of whether you are fortunate enough to be able to afford fw, the conversion opportunities for guard vehicles far out weigh those of marines or any other race (save perhaps Orks - lol!). Even without modifying the main vehicle, you can create your own unique look with the degree of stowage you can add. Further more, unlike marine vehicles which for the main, tend to be painted in exactly the same colours as the marine himself, guard tanks offer far more choice of colour scheme as they tend to be painted in a camo scheme to suit their environment.

Aye, and if you get bored of your plastic Cadians then there is no reason you can't add in a contingent from another metal line (Vostroyans in my case). I have a mixed force of cadian kasrkin and vostroyans, and I plan on adding another force soon so I have a "regiment of remnants", a group of forces assigned together to make up for their losses in duty.
Guard rock. Period.
But do prepare for an uphill struggle in learning how to effectively play your army. The Imperial Guard are not a "learner friendly" force.
That being said, you should be playing for fun anyway. ;)

I have found that the past few games i have played with my gaurd have been awsome fun! Now i have played against some cool people but it has been great!
Tanks are where its at and copius amounts of troops!
Start off with a troop platoon, command squad and a tank and go from there!

Alright guys, I got some Guard... thought about what to do and I'm going with Traitor Guard.
I need to know though... where can I find information on Traitor Guard?
Thanks

The Gaunts Ghosts series is excellent for traitor guard. The Blood Pact have become just about the main "Chaos Guard" force in 40k. If you take a look around the logs, Foot has a traitor guard force which I love, you'll be able to find his log in the project logs section. Col. Gravis also has a fledgling Blood Pact army, lots of neat touches with GS and conversions, definitely one to look at for tips.
Basically, everything you want from the Guard Codex can be represented with Traitors. For example, a Commissar would become an Enforcer, keeping the traitors in line. An Enginseer would become a Dark Mechanicus priest, Psykers would still be used (could rename their powers!).
Blood Pact on WikiTheres a bit on the Blood Pact there...

It might be worth your time to find a copy of C: Eye of Terror and have a read of all the regiments that turned traitor in that conflict.

Yeah thats a good shout dean! YOu can pick them up fairly cheap on ebay!
Also IA 5 has a mass on renegades and also an army list?
You could also use lost and the damed to represent them?

Yeah, I'm looking for both Imperial Guard Codex and Eye of Terror Codex, but most people don't have the Eye of Terror Codex. :(

I've had a look on eBay for Eye of Terror, good prices.
Do I actually need the Imperial Guard Codex? I guess I would... right?
Deserter - May 2, 2008 03:18 PM (GMT)
The Lost and the Damned list is no longer legal, which poses a problem if you intend to ever play in stores, or in tournaments. I love the list but that puts me off sadly!

Well I would run them as Codex IG and just change the names of some stuff... Codex EoT is just for color and fluff and maybe some Doctrine and modeling ideas....
