Title: Helicopters?
McBain - April 10, 2008 12:36 AM (GMT)
Ok so here is my first question folks, i am looking at creating a new guard army and i like the idea of having an airborne element.
But i dont really want to splash out on FW kit so i was looking at Vietnam era hueys but i have hit a snag. Whats the scale i should be looking at buying?
Also i do plan to convert the hueys so dont worry about that part.

1/35 or 1/48 is what you should look for. I'm not sure which would work better though.
Welcome to the forum!

I remember someone making Chimeras into Hueys and they worked perfectly, anyone got a link?

There was an Airborne Catachan army in a WD years ago, he made his flyers from converted Landspeeders. He lengethed them and added wasit heavy bolters and things, and also made a Basilisk one.

Thanks Penguin i had forgotten all about that guys log.
Using chimera hulls and plasticard could work really well im might have a go an doing some designs today if i get anything good i will post it and let you all see.

Personally I'd start with a Land Speeder, enclose the canopy, lengthen the tail, add rotors etc. It give you the turbines, pilots and other useful stuff - though on the other hand it is small. Maybe a combination of the 2?
Otherwise give up on Helicopters and find an alternative like the Old Crow VTOLS

I had thought of this i need to take a trip into the local model shop and have a rake around...

You could combine Rhinos and Landspeeders, my mate did that, (he was making a Valkyrie style thing, but same idea) stuck the more "plane" looking front of a landspeeder into the gap in the front of a rhino, cut off the track wheel, and plasticarded over them to give a smooth bottom. Then you can add rotors etc to the top.

If you don't mind waiting, I'll be doing Chimera Hovercraft!

Penguin thats basically what i was thinking, i loved the guys chimera conversions bt the tail booms were a bit to thin.
I like the idea of an enclosed tail rotar.
Actually looking at that drawing makin a set of high mounted wings would be fairly simple. i had a link yesterday to some turbine blades that would have fit perfectly, but i have lost them now.

If it's a count-as Chimera then each door gunner could have 3 lasguns on an articulated arm of some kind, the turret gun could be underneath (maybe raise the skis a bit to allow this)and the hull gun cound be in front of the copilot (as on the speeder).
The way I've drawn it you could scratch most of the fuselage, only the top is recognisably from a Chimera.
Speeder winglets etc could go on the tail maybe, engines on the roof, beef up the rotor mounting more than I've shown

gimme a couple of weeks to get back to modeling again and i will knock up something to show.
In the mean time back to WoW... must make it to 70

have you checked out the lengthened land speeders on the french GW site.
alternatively hueys or blakhawks in 1.48- 1.35 - no rotors!!! ornithopters!! look it up ;) take of the curves add some armour.
those rotored Chimeras made me want to cry thoughthe jury is still out as to wheter that's from laughter or sorrow.
