Title: Use of Global Mailing by Mods

Slipstream - April 6, 2008 06:22 PM (GMT)
I recently received an email proposal for submissions for a book of painting techniques, via Ammobunker.

This is, in my opinion, an abuse of the mod's mailing power. We have forums for a reason.

Please don't do this again. The mass-mailing feature should be used for Administrative mailings, only.

Thank you.

On what level is this an abuse of power I am trying to create a recipe book of painting techniques to benefit the members and the forum.

If you don't want such benefits unsubscribe from bulk e-mails.

And the book is only an idea again for the forum only

Slipstream is saddening when people say this - your the second person to not be happy about the mass email system and to be honest, I dont know why - most inboxes are fairly huge these days.

As Wolfie states, the recipe book will benefit all members and I see no way in which this is an abuse of power.

Could you elaborate further?

Slipstream, I understand if you don't want bulk email, I get about 150 a day! but its a simple click in the box to avoid it.

We only use it sparingly when a message needs to get to the full membership, ie: Open Bash or the Newsletter.

Okay, I'll address these points:

1) 'Everyone's email is full of spam'. Not mine. My email box is very, very clean, and I work hard to keep it that way.

2) It is a forum-only item. It is not a message of downtime, server moves, or other item which truly affects the ENTIRE community. It should have been posted on the forum, in the appropriate section, just like everything else.

3) If I check the email box to not receive emails, then I will miss actual, important announcements, such as downtime, server moves, etc.

If you've got one or two people stepping up to voice there concerns, that means that a substantial group feels the same way, but are staying quiet.

It's board admin ettiquette 101. Do not spam your members with bulk email.

But we have only ever sent out 5 bulk e-mails over the 8 months we have been running and none of them spam. All were for the benefit for our members.

We rarely send out bulk e-mails and when we do they are for a purpose, to infrm a memebrs of an important event or a problem.

From memory bulk e-mails so far:

1) Change of domain name,
2) The recipe book,
3) Open bash
4) Rules reminder
5) A one off newletter (which will become regular hopefully)

there have been maybe a few more of which I can't recall, all bulk e-mails have a title describing the context if the context is not important to you then you can simply delete.

We as a forum have NEVER spammed the members as the number of bulk e-mails sent have been very limited.

So your complaining about something tahts only so far a problem for you and one of my friends who to be honest is a bit of a whinger and I tell him so to his face and if he is reading Gungir your a whinger. :)

No problem. If I'm a whinger, then I'll leave.

Never called you a whinger.

I am calling my friend a whinger because he is.

At what point did I say "slipstream your a whinger" NEVER!

All I said was we have never spammed the membership and your the first person to complaint about something which is for your benefit. Where my friend who I know in person whings to me all the time.

Asmodai Dark - April 7, 2008 10:22 PM (GMT)
The only other person to complain, actually complained about getting the newsletter which he said 'he never signed up for'

Im sorry you feel that way fella but.. in all honesty, its an email now and then to get people involved. If theres more people that agree with this then we'll reassess our position as we do with everything - we encourage people to question the mods! All the damn time as it happens. In fact every moderation email says if you disagree, tell another mod...

Seriosuly fella, your the only person with concerns...

Oh, come on!!! I expect that kind of response from a ten year old!

Brian, no one called you a whinger. Simple fact is this. We tried to do something to the benefit of all. We certainly did not abuse our position as mods (who run and fund this site) and I'm sorry, but 5 e-mails in 8 months....let's just get over it.

Can we now close this and get on with the hobby?

schoolcormorant - April 7, 2008 10:58 PM (GMT)
Brian, please don't leave, I'd miss you!

I can understand you feel this somewhat trifling to assert a mass email, but part of the thinking is, that we hadn't sent one for so long we didn't want you to think we'd stopped doing them.

AmmoBunker's original brief was to be a little more comprehensive than 'other' forums, and so newsletters and interaction was part of that. =)

I think Brian left a couple of months ago due to other issues, which was a real shame as I admired his painting and work ethic, it was a good example to us all. I still see Brian as a friend, but if he no longer wants to be involved in this forum and get the rare bulk emails that are sent out, he needs to PM Wolverine to have his account terminated.

As SC said, it will be a big loss, tho in retrospect Brian hasn't posted on the forum for a couple of months so the balls in his court. I personally love to see him return with his terrain stuff, it was a big inspiration to us all.

Issue moved over to PM status. Log Closed
