Description: (more to come)

great first attept Mrs D. far better than mine ¬_¬ (think i'll stick to the GW kits from now on :P)
edit: i do have a suggestion though; i think if you glue sand to the side of the cliff, i think it'll give you a far more 'cliff like' texture
Merceus - April 6, 2008 11:11 AM (GMT)
bod, when was the last time you looked at the side of a cliff? its not sandy or rocky or what have you! :P They're usually sheer, like in these pics... well done to ya  makes me wanna do some...
Gundrek - April 6, 2008 12:23 PM (GMT)
Really well done terrain. Though, you can maybe texture a little more the hill as it seems too much plain.
In your next terrain job, just try this tips : brush your foam panels with an ironbrush (sot of brush used to strip off paint on metal surfaces) lightly, it will texture your hill panel along with some gravels, it comes out very nicely.
Digits - April 6, 2008 12:31 PM (GMT)
Fantastic work for a first attempt Mrs Dean! :D I remember my first being awful compared to this. :( Your water and pool are brilliant! A very nice use of pebbles / rocks in the water and the running stream is very effective.
As Gundrek says, try texturing the rock a little. Try to avoid the inevitable lines that appear at the base of each sheet of foam. a little polyfiller / tetrion works wonders there, as does a little collected scree (sand and stones) at the base of slopes.
Your trees are very nice indeed.
Keep this up and you'll be taking commissions!
Dean, you are one jammy fellow! ;)

go take a look at he cliffsby the marina, they are very chalky/pourous/craggy, which, in model terrian terms i would translate to sand. ;)
Merceus - April 6, 2008 03:50 PM (GMT)
no it wouldnt, lol... think about the scale, wou wouldn't even be able to see it at 52 :P

the sand you be 'fine' rocks, whilst the gravel chunks whould represent larger stones/rocks
Merceus - April 6, 2008 05:47 PM (GMT)
cliff is not made of 'fine' rocks, its a solid lump that likes threatening people to give way

Guys!!!! Fact is, this is some great terrain. Let's see some more please Mrs Dean!
Tony88 - April 7, 2008 11:58 AM (GMT)
The water effect is pretty sweet. Mind sharing how you did it Mrs Dean?

like the use of the water effects, the waterfall is far better than just a static river. You could emphasise the white water with paint, but it's fine as it is
stone painting on the cliff faces is good, though possibly there should be some kind of soil around the edges for the grass to be growing on

That sounds like a good idea. I think Dean has one of those brushes. If I get around to trying that soon I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks!

Sure I will share! I bought some stuff at Micheals (Craft Store) that you mix and put in a vase with fake flowers. It hardens and holds the flowers up while looking like water in the vase. The only problem I have is while sitting on a shelf at home it got dust on it and I cant get that off. That is why some is clear and some is foggy (dust). It used to be all clear. So I would suggest if you use that stuff to cover your terrain and not just sit it on a shelf like I did. It took me forever to find the "right" fish to put in the water and now you can barely see it in the pond!

Now THAT's modelling! Fish! Fantastic!

I went around and finally found some fish small enough in the fishing lure section of Wal-Mart. That was a fishing lure and all I did was take the hook out!

Hehe, the fishy idea is quite clever. Might put some fish in the river section i'm currently working on for Legends of the Old West.

I've seen fake fish before in scenery, using playmobile fish. A little paint and you get a range of types and shapes!
Time to raid my kids toybox!

It was a 2 part resin mix and the stuff on the top of the water is some sort of fogging effect it did when it dried. (and dust too.. ) but I washed off the water before I took pix. The resin we used ate the paint off of the head of the fishing lure so if you are trying this yourself read the directions carefully, no foam can be showing anywhere you are going to put water (must be painted) (resin will eat it) and test any bits you are putting in the resin.
I myself am impressed with her reeds and the lily pads made from old brushes and artificial leaves respectfully.

Hey Mr. Dean! Did they ask you????? Noooooooooo! You got me on here, now stay off my blog! Unless of course it is compliments! haha
And I think you are incorrect, it didnt dry with that foggy apperance, that came later.
But I love you anyway!
Remind me to work on my Shephard Stone thingy tonight. Well until American Idol starts at least! :D

Wll MRS Dean, what do you have planned for us next? Will you be posting WIP pictures?
Mrs. Dean - April 13, 2008 09:58 PM (GMT)

This is the start of my next project.

I worked a little bit on it yesterday.

I am going off of these two pics. Kinda doing my own version. We shall see how it turns out!

However, I'm glad I cqarried on scrolling ! :D
Nice work so far. A nice idea to recreate something you've seen drawn. The weathering effect on the two pillars looks very good. Care to tell us how you achieved it?

Hurray! Another female besides me and SC on the website! And although people will say im a hypocrite for not saying you've gone over to 'the dark side' by joining in thie madness that is this hobby, I have to say i think your terrain pieces are looking fantastic. Shhhh though, dont tell the others, but although i hate warhammer, i actually love to check out the terrain pieces, especially those that are scratch built. :ph43r: Oh and nice work in keping Mr Dean under control, nothing makes me happier than seeing a grown man cower in fear of his wife! :D

Ok, I feel dumb now! I had to ask Dean what "Mod time" meant. haha You thought I was being dirty!!!!!!
Not sure if I am happy with the pillars. All I have done so far is:
Spray painted them black THEN remembered I wanted to try the iron brush technique that Gundrek suggested so I did that.
Then I painted them with a mix of dark and light gray.
Then I painted over that with a dark flesh color I tried to make myself because Dean only had a little bottle of it.
This is where I am at now.

Weeellll Dean has corrupted me. I, too dont play (or necessarily like) the game but making terrain is fun!
As for keeping Mr. Dean under control, I wish! I would keep him OFF ebay! When he buys more stuff I always ask him if he has completed the million other "little men" he has. haha

OK, that explains part of the texture. You sprayed the foam first..... this can work very well if done in moderation, but many sprays will eat the foam. Looks good and certainly one to use again.
As for the towering pink appendages, yup, for a few seconds anyway!! ;)

Those rock formations look very nice Mrs Dean. I usually avoid using foam for anything because of the breakage and mess it creates, but i got a hot wire cutter now :D , so i might make a few of these for a desert board im working on. :D you should build a whole gaming board's worth!

keep up the good work. i hope to see more soon.

Oh I LOVE the foam hot wire cutter! I am working on enough terrain to cover a gameboard but I just work in spurts, when I come up with something I might want to try.
Any suggestions of something fun to try to build??
