Title: Strelok's Return (I'm not quite dead!)
Description: Oh you're not fooling anyone...
Strelok - March 2, 2008 09:29 PM (GMT)
I've been MIA for quite some time due to commission work, but I promise I have actually been doing work. I figure it's about time to post some work, but my camera is three hours away at home, I forgot it there when I headed to university and won't be getting it back for a week. Here's a shot of some of the stuff I've been working on, taken with the girlfriend's terrible camera. EDIT: These belong to Docthunder of Warseer fame, and I've been given the honor of painting them.
Asmodai Dark - March 2, 2008 09:33 PM (GMT)
I cant wait to see the whole army fella - Ive never been a big fan of female space marines but... hey, Im converted.
Rictus - March 2, 2008 11:46 PM (GMT)
Christ, he really isn't dead. The rumours turned out to be wrong after all. So many of them do in the end.
Now that you have de-bunked the 'Strolok is dead' rumour should we be expecting more updates soon?
thewizardofoz - March 3, 2008 12:16 AM (GMT)
yay! not dead! woot. now i expect an update when you get that camera back....
Strelok - March 3, 2008 12:36 AM (GMT)
I'll definitely be posting more updates as soon as I have access to a decent camera.
I have plenty more infantry that need their turn in the spotlight. Next up, after a finished army of the ones above, is a bit of deathwing!
titan136 - March 3, 2008 05:47 AM (GMT)
Glad to see you posting over here Strelok. The Widows look great and those drop pods are certainly well painted (despite your dislike of painting them)
looking forward to seeing an army shot once you're done.
jasevx - March 3, 2008 01:00 PM (GMT)
I thought the gators had got you on one of your survival jollys!
Can't wait to see close ups of these, love models that push the boundaries
Strelok - March 6, 2008 05:16 AM (GMT)
Some work, but still the shitty camera.
First, the beginning of a shot at Doghouse pattern legs quickly thrown together for a chaos marine. Definitely a lot of work remaining:

Second is my attempt to find a way to make mobile heavy weapons in a guard drop army (with much more work required):

Here's another shot of the Ogre-to-Ogryn conversion, with more focus on the arm built from GS.

Two days til I get my camera back!
Sheep - March 6, 2008 05:36 AM (GMT)
Looking really good mate, love the ogryn esp the padded armour, and that arm looks shop bought, well done :D
Taarnak - March 6, 2008 08:57 AM (GMT)
Just wanted to jump in and say good job all around.
Really like the drop pods and, fluff-be-damned, the female Termis look awesome too.
Never been a fan of using the Chaos Warrior legs on SMs. Having said that, the detail you sculpted looks good from what I can see.
Ogre is looking pretty good too. I like the padded armor alot.
Looking forward to more.
~Eric
titan136 - March 6, 2008 12:58 PM (GMT)
I've already shown my appreciation for that amazing ogryn idea, but just thought I'd chime in and give you another pat on the back. Love the cargo pockets!
Asmodai Dark - March 6, 2008 01:18 PM (GMT)
If your knocking around tonite let me know about that idea you had or shoot me a PM some time - sorry I was so long dude, thats nature for ya :D
Strelok - March 10, 2008 11:36 PM (GMT)
Ok, I'm doing some painting tonight, but I have a question for anyone reading: I'm converting an army of my own at some point (or very slowly while working on commissions). I want a moderately effective tournament army, and they're going to be marines with at least one squad of terminators. Anyone have any hints? I was going to do deathwing, but I have no idea how to make an effective deathwing list.
BDJV - March 11, 2008 05:51 AM (GMT)
Those are some nice looking drop pods!
Strelok - March 12, 2008 05:48 AM (GMT)
The only work for the day that I got a photo of, and what will become my dinner tomorrow night, I'm gutting it and then baking it. My shirt is only tucked in because I was wearing waders. Tucked-in shirts just look strange. That's my knife strapped to my arm, by the way, if anyone was wondering. It just makes it more accessible.

Exactly 24", the upper end of the legal limit. I hooked a bigger one later in the evening but it broke the line off at the leader. Boo.
Strelok - March 13, 2008 02:03 AM (GMT)
Here's some work that I've done that the commissioner, Dr. Thunder, wanted to see. The right arm needs to be repinned and now that I took these pictures, I've noticed that I missed some color on the lower lip.

titan136 - March 13, 2008 02:11 AM (GMT)
Jeez thats a big fish AJ!
As for the model, really sweet work on the gem and the hazard stripes. What kinda backpacks do they use? Standard marine ones?
Strelok - March 14, 2008 01:26 AM (GMT)
Here's some work on a sniper for The_Dark_Sarge, he's a member of a guerrilla-type kill-team.

and some edits to the original, after some constructive criticism (aka MOAR GHILLIE!)

and my friend shooting the .38 special today at the range and a perfectly timed photo:

finally, a very WIP ALICE pack:
Digits - March 14, 2008 07:57 AM (GMT)
The scout is an awsome conversion. I'm so going to steal that!
The picture capturing the pistol flash is awsome! Nicely captured.
jasevx - March 14, 2008 09:13 AM (GMT)
Its a pain in the backside, since leaving the reservists I've got to travel to France to fire fullbore, tho watching the French run does counter the traveling costs! (Joke Firestorm!) ;)
KayvaanShrike - March 14, 2008 11:39 AM (GMT)
Dude hes well going to have GSR all over his hands now, and get implemented for the crime! Sorry to much CSI.
Are they SoBs? Or just female Marines, either way they look well good!
Strelok - March 14, 2008 03:39 PM (GMT)
Digits, you're welcome to steal the scout conversion, it's a cadian torso, catachan arms, and scout legs, with a guard heavy backpack. I then sculpted on the sleeves and a collar to cover up how much I had to stretch the neck to get him to look like he's looking down the scope. After that I just sculpted on the ghillie material.
Jase, supposedly there's a place nearby to where I live where if you can tow it out, you can pretty much shoot it there (I'm sure self-propelled could be considered "towable'). Plus they've got a 700 yd range which is nice. The place I usually go only has a 100 yd range. At that range I can shoot with iron sights on my .22LR.
Gav, they're female marines that I've painted for Doctor Thunder. The next army on the commission list is sisters of battle, in almost an opposite color scheme. As for the GSR, hell yeah. By the end of the day, my fingers were covered in powder and brass from loading mags. And what I would do for an AR chambered in 6.5 :D
no-use4a-name - March 14, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
The sculpting on the sniper is really well done. I also like the use of bitz.
Strelok - March 23, 2008 11:40 PM (GMT)
Hmmm, pic update! Some of the work I've been doing between painting drop pods so that the painting doesn't completely kill me (aka I now hate painting vehicles forever). This is for a guard kill-team operating in the jungle, equipped for night infiltration and generally wreaking havoc (the sniper is already shown and all besides the pilot/driver require ghillying):
Squad leader WIP:

Bolt pistol mod (an older bit I did that I figured would work well here, but I think it might need a larger barrel since it's supposed to be equipped with a silencer):

Pilot:

Pilot's suppressed machine-pistol and a shot of the NVG attachment:

Missile Launcher Trooper (torso, as I haven't decided if he will be kneeling or standing):

Trimmed down launcher (scout arms as I figure the trooper needs a bit more armor protection from the added heat and such):

Finally, the WIP pack, still due to add buckles as well as MOAR POUCHES:
schoolcormorant - March 23, 2008 11:44 PM (GMT)
Looking good AJ. I like the backpack so far, I would so buy some...!
SC
The_dark_sarge - March 24, 2008 06:38 AM (GMT)
wow dude nice work
that gun the squad leader has is sweet
Dominus Ex Machina - March 24, 2008 10:09 AM (GMT)
Awesome stuff Strelok, I'm liking the guard kill-team muchly! The sniper is wicked!
Asmodai Dark - March 24, 2008 01:22 PM (GMT)
To be honest AJ, Im more then happy with that back pack as it is! But add the extra bits and we'll see, just remember to make them flush with the back as its only going to be a one sided cast now...
titan136 - March 24, 2008 01:29 PM (GMT)
Great work on the backpack. a lot of very characterful conversions as always.
Strelok - May 25, 2008 12:06 AM (GMT)
OK, I've been embroiled in a great battle against my latest commission (aka me painting loads of red and black armor and trying not to despise it and give up). My local gaming store had a "help paint the store army" event today so I grabbed an Ork nob and paint it the opposite of what I've been painting lately. This is my first attempt at NMM so don't be too harsh. I didn't use any metallic paints on the model, and I'm pretty happy with the result. Yet to base it since I'm not sure how the store is basing them and I figure they at least want some continuity with the bases.

my apologies on the quality of the photos, they rather hastily taken.
the_great_gonzo - May 25, 2008 08:43 AM (GMT)
I never read the post above, just looked at the pics, I would never have know you had painted NMM, especially the silver. So I guess that is a compliment?!?
Skin on the nob is very well done too and the rusty chain looks rusty, not brown!
KayvaanShrike - May 25, 2008 03:02 PM (GMT)
Not that I am any expert on NMM, but from what I can see, its a really good start, but with some practise and things it will look even better. I think the main issue is that the transition from each colour could so with being smoother, to give it a final smooth look. But its sure as hell a great start!
Asmodai Dark - May 25, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
AJ whenever I see your stuff it always makes me feel down - you've been painting a fraction of the time I have and your already kicking my arse.
But for the love of god man thin your bloody paints! Do that and you'll have NMM licked.
freebooter - May 26, 2008 01:43 AM (GMT)
I have to echo the comments on thinning your paints too... It's kinda really important towards getting a smooth finish.
But I love that orc and the NMM looks good.
The Killteam are looking great with my only criticism being the sleeve on the leader. It looks way too bulky... Even for being rolled up. Kinda looks like he's wrapped his arm in a hessian sack...
Strelok - May 27, 2008 02:58 AM (GMT)
I promise I thin my paints!! The spray came out of the can terribly and beaded up on the mini! I didn't want to wait on the mini so I just worked with the bad undercoat.
Tepok - May 28, 2008 10:06 PM (GMT)
Looks incredible, I'd just add a bit of red to the whole model, or blue, or yellow, just some sort of extra bright colour.
