Title: GOLDEN DEMON CHALLENGE
Description: Ammobunker Goes Forth to 'Victory'
Rictus - February 15, 2008 07:42 PM (GMT)
The 'ABGDGCT' - The Ammo Bunker Golden Demon Group Challenge Thing, Formerly Known As 'Dad's Army', aka A Right Shower of Bastards (Official name yet to be decided).
Some may remember last year a group of 'avid' modellers decided to enter Golden Demon for the first time. This was for a number of reasons, including getting into the venue earlier than the rest of the unwashed masses. But most of all it was to be part of a group of like minded panic stricken individuals desperately trying to get a model finished in time that wouldn't result in total humiliation on the day as it was handed into the competition.
It was FUN! Well, more fun than getting a tooth pulled anyway. But it proved to be just the thing to get a bunch of us motivated (honestly, ask those that did it....jasevx, Digits, Deadley, Brush Your Teeth or Rictus) enough to do the best we have done, mainly so that the others couldn't gloat at our expense.
You may have guessed that we are going to do it again for Golden Demon '08.
This is the start of that journey, a journey that will involve effort, dedication, planning, luck and possibly chemical stimulants. Many hurdles will be overcome and many minds will be broken, remade and broken again, but eventually something will be produced.
Now the question is do you have what it takes to join us on this journey? Well, do you?
Now last time the rule was you could do anything as long as it was a tank. This time we are having it much more open, as long as the entry fits the theme we have decided upon it counts and this year the theme (after much infighting, bitching, bribery and sexual favours promised ot performed amongst the Mods) is 'AIR', other than that the category and even scale of the entry (or entries) is up to you.
How you interpret the theme is entirely up to you, limited only by your imagination. Some possibilities include:
Single Model - Gobbo Doom Diver, winged mutant/chaos leader, Baharroth, Shrike, Ork Stormboy, Wizard using air spells. FW pilots. Air Caste crewman,
Squad/Unit - Swooping Hawks, Harpies, Terminators (who appear 'out of thin air...'), Raptors, Tzeentch Flying Discs, Wood Elf Eagles, jet bikes, Tau Drones
Vehicle/Monster - Warhammer monsters e.g. Dragon, Eagle, with or without a mounted character, 40k Aircraft or Skimmers, Drop Pod, AA tank or emplacement (e.g. Hydra), Dwarf blimp or gyrocopter.
Duel/Diorama/Open - Anything as long as it includes something winged/floating/jumping/falling - or perhaps an Elysian squad rappelling down from a Valk and securing the landing zone or retrieving supplies that have been dropped, Swooping Hawks making a bombing run, Ork Stormboyz getting it wrong and slamming into the ground, a Techpriest Enginseer worryingly trying to work out where the nut he has left over goes in the Thunderbolt engine he has in front of him (I quite like that idea, shame I'm not doing it)....
If you have already started something and think it will fit feel free to use it, as long as it is still pretty early in the build it can be included (in fact this is what I am doing...some may be able to guess what this will be).
So the harsh and restrictive 'rules' to take part...
1. The entry must fit the theme.
2. The entry must be eligible to be entered into Golden Demon.
3. The deadline is the entry time itself of whichever Dolgen Demon you are entering.
4. While you are free to show the entries off anywhere you choose (including your own Project Log on AB) it would be nice if this thread has the first look or exclusive updates...
So that is four rules, two of which are set by GW and the last one isn't actually a rule at all. Feel free to whip/beat or inflict other punishments upon your body if you feel you need to work in a more repressive environment to get good results. If it helps ask a friend to carry this out or ask Jase for the number of a 'professional'.
We have launched this earlier than last time as previously it was too short and a number of people had to drop out for that very reason. It also allows us to cover ALL the Golden Demons so wherever you are you can take part. People should now have enough time to do the following...
1. have idea and plan,
2. start building,
3. change their minds & scrap what they have done,
4. spend a week panicking that they haven't got a good idea or be able to finish in time and thinking about how much of a tit they will look on the day with nothing but a cardboard mock up painted blue with an Ultramarines transfer stuck on top,
5. have a new idea,
6. plan it,
7. build it,
8. paint it,
9. varnish it,
10. amuse themselves in the week before GD watching those who left it too late try and finish theirs,
11. remember the night before they were going to do a display base.
12. think 'sod it', find ticket, pack figure(s)/tank/monster etc and go to bed.
What have you got to lose but the little sanity and dignity you have left?
So far the entrants are shaping up like this..

Digits - February 15, 2008 08:05 PM (GMT)
Well this thread is just the motivation I need to dust off the Black Squig!
You already saw this on my earlier thread, "Ork Flyer" which is now closed.
From this...

To this.....

This....

And finally this...

So here's the deal,
I'M STUCK!!!!!!!!Seriously, I am! I can't figure out how to start covering the frame so I can start putting all my orky plates on it!!!
I've even oredered a few bits for it, 2 Zzap guns, 2 grot bombs and Marcus has kindly donated the FW Ork Pilot. But I'm stuck....... :(
brambleten - February 15, 2008 08:12 PM (GMT)
i probably wont get to the Golden Demon but i will try to do a model anyway, possibly converting a tau battlesuit (just another excuse to mess around with fish in cricket pads made out of card board)
sort of like this

but with the drones stuck to his feet like a surf board or something. either that or him hanging onto one firing a fusion blaster. something like that
digits - what are you stuck with? all the massive gaps or covering it all. i would suggest plaster for filling it, or polyfilla which i think is plaster anyway. then roughcoat or something which can then be painted as rust with then all the bolts and plates sticking on in random places.
hope that helps.
MutantMaggot - February 15, 2008 08:13 PM (GMT)
I'm in, with my 'almighty' Nurgle daemon prince of pure insanity ...
And possibly some other entry, but probably not. <_<
Death Korp - February 15, 2008 08:27 PM (GMT)
I'll put my name down for it, but i don't know what to do for it yet... a dragon perhaps? Or a calvary charge of some type?
DK
Pickle - February 15, 2008 08:30 PM (GMT)
Mmm, what to do, I probably can't enter GD so maybe I could just do a diorama for fun!
Thinking maybe an Elysian squad landing and securing some supplies or maybe some Elysian Snipers setting up. Any ideas guys?
Brush Your Teeth - February 15, 2008 08:46 PM (GMT)
Righto!
Not sure if i'll be able to make this years GD, Depends what happens with starting University and where it leaves me in life..
Regardless, ill try and get something done for GD, worst that happens is i end up with a nice ornament to show off with one of my armies.
No idea's yet what to do, but something intelinking with my Cadian drop troops (painted to look like U.S. Rangers from Black Hawk Down conviniently enough  ) - the first idea i've had is having a unit fast roping out of a valkyre, however this would be hard to do whilst retaining a useable squad, and hard to do from a modelling perspective (as i fail with greenstuff..). HOWEVER! if someone has a squad (10 guys) of classic metal cadians they are able to part with i may be convinced and take on such an unacheivable and expensive project... i have an idea that may work in game.. however it is too awsome and complex to describe in words (mostly too complex)..
to sum all that up, i will participate, although whether i enter it to GD or not at the end is still undecided..
BYT - off to sketch up idea's
Mordian Marauder - February 15, 2008 08:50 PM (GMT)
Excellent...no-one has suggested my idea...yet. mwhahaha.
My question is...if I can't go to GD, can I like...post my miniature to someone on here and have them enter it on my behalf? Or is that not allowed?
Secondly, does the model actually have to fit the characteristics of a regular GW model- let's say we have an Imperial Guardsman with a piece of equipment that he really shouldn't have. Can I get away with this?
I will enter this anyway and let you all in on my big plan as it continues. I'm not motivated enough to complete a whole army so maybe a diorama is just what I need at the moment.
As for what I'm doing, well, all you need to know is that it's going to be based on my favourite unit from Command and Conquer 3...the GDI commando ;) I bet no-one knows what the heck I'm on about!! =D
Arhalien - February 15, 2008 08:57 PM (GMT)
Well I was thinking of doing some Mentor legion terminators (possibly with a chaplain), so count me in (ish ;)) ;)
dave38x - February 15, 2008 09:29 PM (GMT)
Well, im up for it, as i have always entered golden demon. question is, what do i do? count me in anyway!!
Brush Your Teeth - February 15, 2008 09:34 PM (GMT)
Right ignoring the fact i cant draw, here are the plans i've scetched up:

Hopefully the Pic explains what im aiming for, working ingame wise it just to represent the turn a squad unloads from the valkyre, the next turn when the valkyre moves on i can leave the squad in its place where they've just 'secured the area'
Now all i need is a squad of classic cadians and a valkyre

It would look super cool if you could somehow use the ropes as your stand, instead of using a clumsy looking "stick". Maybe the old Indian rope trick.

what, twirl wool around some thinnish brass rods and hope they support it. now that would look brilliant if you can pull it off
Digits - February 15, 2008 10:19 PM (GMT)
Enough thin ropes, thin wire and glue to stiffen. I suspect though with the weight of the resin Valkirie, you'd need at least half a dozen.
Brush Your Teeth - February 15, 2008 10:29 PM (GMT)
not really sure how the valkyre model works, but there seems to be a door on either side of it and one at the rear, with a brass rod comming from each hidden witin rope somehow (some kind of ropey rextured stuff wrapped round it?) i recon it might be possible...
another option is to have a fairly tall peice of scenery on the base that will hide the majority of any brass rods supporting the flyer.
Pickle - February 15, 2008 10:30 PM (GMT)
Just had an idea would DKoK be ok as they are wearing gas masks to filter out the bad "air"
Pfreck - February 15, 2008 10:32 PM (GMT)
I am going to enter the Golden Demons this year. With what, I'm not sure yet.. Will get back with an idea soon! (I hope..)
Cheers :D
Sheep - February 15, 2008 10:36 PM (GMT)
Count me in, Tau devilfish.
Work so far.
Pickle - February 15, 2008 10:40 PM (GMT)
Wow, Sheep isn't that balanced a bit precariously? Looks like you could blow it over? Looks good though
Arhalien - February 15, 2008 10:43 PM (GMT)
Looking interesting there Sheep; I presume the base will be enlarged or stuck into a scenic base?

that would be [oopps a daisy] awesome if you had a rope each side, and 2 guys it just might be strong enough!
Sheep - February 16, 2008 01:42 AM (GMT)
Nope, its got to stay like that, Oz has some pretty restrictive basing rules, no scenic bases on vehicles, no display bases.
Pretty shite if you ask me.
*edit* Oh and its going to be a rappelling one too, started it a while ago, this might be the impetus i need to finish it.
Death Korp - February 16, 2008 10:11 AM (GMT)
I know its a little silly, but you could really enter anything, because they breathe 'air' :P
Ok, i'll shut up now :D
DK
Asmodai Dark - February 16, 2008 10:18 AM (GMT)
I shall be doing a AI thunderbolt and a storm trooper diorama. I'm also chewing a few other ideas around as I wouldnt mind finally giving that moving ambulance idea an airing but... we'll see
Arhalien - February 16, 2008 10:22 AM (GMT)
Oh what the hell; count me in with the terminators :) I should have time over the summer to concentrate on painting them.

You can get twisted wire which will support it and looks like rope, you just need to get some similar looking string to curl up at the bottom of it so it looks like its the actual rope!
My entry is:
Single minature 40k: Flying Kroot Shaper
Diorama: Cyclone in a (one sided) dogfight with a Hell Talon
Arhalien - February 16, 2008 10:58 AM (GMT)
Hmm, having ideas here..... tzeentch lord (for fantasy) converted with wings.... somehow.
(I have no idea how I'd convert it at al, or what model I'd base it on, but I'm just brainstorming ;))
Or, tzeentch lord on disc..... hmmm.
Pfreck - February 16, 2008 11:30 AM (GMT)
Hmm, I might have an idea.
A Chaos Dwarf Lord on Great Taurus. The Taurus will be entirely scratchbuilt, and he'll have skin that looks something like the skin of the Balrog (explains the 'Imune to fire-based attacks' :))
Will post some sketches as soon as I have a Tablet or when I feel like drawing something on paper.. :P
Cheers.
Death Korp - February 16, 2008 11:37 AM (GMT)
I'll probably have some Space Marines having a last stand against Orks, based a little on the front cover of the Rouge Trader book (Crimson Fists and Orks FTW!)The air part will come in from some Orks taking hits from a Heavy bolter. Hahahaha....
And a Krieg Commisar.
DK
Dave - February 16, 2008 12:33 PM (GMT)
count me in, i will try do a model for each catergorie(sp)
I was thinking of a landing valkrie or drop pod, some assualt marines.
Dave
Rictus - February 16, 2008 03:24 PM (GMT)
First post updated with those who have signed up
(note whose who haven't decided on what they are doing yet will be put up when they now their project(s))Mordian Marauder: I'm afraid someone can't enter the model for you, it is a big no-no for GD and is instant disqualification. If you think there is a chance you can enter a GD join in anyway and as long as you use the GW rules for entry and use the deadline for a GD you can take part in the Challenge.
Pickle: I think the air filters are such an intrinsic part of the Death Korps they can be entered into the Challenge.
Though can I put out saying something is breathing and therfore fulfilling the theme of AIR is not good enough....give it a bit more effort than that! :D
Death Korp: The Commie is fine (as above) but the diorama? Give one or two of the Orks jump packs and it would be perfect though.
And I suppose it is time to show what I will be working on. One or two of you might remember this...

Size comparison, Chimers, Deathstrike Launcher, Decimator:

It will be a bit different to what it was originally going to look like as it is going to be looted and use the rules for...

So quite a lot to do yet...
Arhalien - February 16, 2008 03:50 PM (GMT)
Right, I've been thinking about the tzeentch lord....
Possible legs could come from the warrior priest with two handed hammer:
http://uk.games-workshop.com/empire/miniature-gallery/7/(not sure how easy it'd be to cut though)
Wings from pegasus knights, sword from chaos possessed marines
http://uk.games-workshop.com/chaosspacemar...ure-gallery/46/body and left arm..... possibly chaos warrior boxed set (if there's anyway I can order a sprue it woudl give me some test models as well)
Shield (and posibly head) from Archaon.
Pose would be standing up, arms spread out to the side, looking forward (or possibly upwards) with wings spread behind him.
Expense: ridiculous
Conversion work: Lots
Painting: As I;, thinking of doing green source lighting from the armour plate cracks, impossible
Chances of me actually doing it; roughly nil ;)
sir.spamalot - February 16, 2008 04:10 PM (GMT)
Count me in, I'll try to think of something Elysian themed. Not sure yet but I have my eyes on the sniper team. I'll think on it over the weekend. Though it will take me all year to get a semi good (in GD terms) model that will potentially catch the judges eyes I'm thinking maybe a duel or diorama sort of thing.
cheers
MutantMaggot - February 16, 2008 04:11 PM (GMT)
That would be very good if you did it, Arhalien, but it would require a tremendous amount of money ... ;)
I already have my model, but I need help: what would anyone suggest for a Nurgle daemon to hold in its left hand?

Torso from the FW Militia Icon pack? I am presuming this guy is winged?
Arhalien: Is this guy as well as the Termie squad or instead of?
Angel Robertson - February 16, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
I really want to do this but have a feeling i may not even be in the country around GD time . . .
AR
Arhalien - February 16, 2008 04:27 PM (GMT)
I realise that....
Ok, lets do a quick tot up:
Warrior priest=£5
Chaos warrior sprue (if they put them back on mail order again :()=£6 (I think)
Pegasus wings from BWBitz (if they're still going. Bitzbox seem to be useless and don;thavepegasus knight wings...):
Chaos posessed sword arm=80p
three chaos warrior bodies (front and back):£6
3 chao warrior right arms=£1.20
3 chaos warrior shields=£1.50
2 chaos warrior heads.... damn, they don;t have any :(
head from terminator lord;80p
postage and packaging=£3.50
Total (plus however much the wings and maybe the heads cost)=£17.50
:o
edit: @Rictus; put me down for this one only when you see the model; it would be as well as the termie squad, but don;t count on it ever happening ;)
Digits - February 16, 2008 04:35 PM (GMT)
OK,I'm slightly bemused by the half hearted postings herebouts! If you are entering, do so with gusto!! If you have no doubt whatsoever that you won't do it, then DON'T!!!!! <_<
Starks333 - February 16, 2008 04:45 PM (GMT)

He's a winged daemon prince, so yep, he's winged. ;)
That seems a good idea, but I'd rather use something that isn't FW, and could be used as FW or fantasy ... :)
Also, and suggestions of corpses to go on his 40 base? (I'll have two -- one fantasy, one 40k, both magnetized) I want a mound of bodies -- has anyopne got any convenient mounds of bones or ideas for corpses other than zombies?
I think I'll make him hold some sort of skull or a similar item in his left hand.
Thanks, :)
