Title: Low Orbit / Atmospheric Ork Gunship
Description: "The Black Squig"!

Digits - September 28, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
OK, I realised this project was too big to hijack the "Paradise" thread so I've decided to start one off all for myself!

When we were at Games Day, I was very impressed with the Ork Minepig which sat like a big fat whale over the Apocalypse game.

Despite having bought myself enough plastic to keep me modelling for the next six months, I was more keen to get home and start off my own attempt at a similar behemoth!

Without boring you with the photos of my collected scrap, here is a WIP shot showing the overall size of the project.

As you can see, a little larger that a landraider!

My intention is to use this in Apocalypse games counting as a Stompa.

It's going to take me an age to build as it's going to be plastered in riveted and bolted panels and I have to dream up some stonking great weapons for it. Suggestions most welcome in this regard.

I am currently working up the skull into an ork (feels like I'm working on the set of "Silent Witness"! lol). I've had to send the misus out for a couple of packs of GS. So I expect to finish the main shape of the skull tonight!

I'm wide open to suggestions (and offers of scrap to go it!) so don't be shy! Wish me luck!!!

Rictus - September 28, 2007 04:14 PM (GMT)
Woohoo!

If you are in need of GS visit Antenocitis Workshop (link in the Links section), they sell a tub containing a 36" strip. Came in handy for the Nurgle LR and Pred.

Digits - September 28, 2007 04:19 PM (GMT)
Cheers mate! Unfortunately they're out of both GS & rivets at the moment, hence I've got her indoors visiting GW for me as I type this! (She REALLY detests going in there! :D )

Right, this is as far as I have got with the face before I ran out. Taking advice on the other thread, I intend to widen the temples. I also have to build the bottom jaw.

My first weapon is this rather simple "chin" turret. It will have rivets and bolts a plenty once I get hold of some. Little ork there for scale.

I am going to build a cockpit above the skull, but at the moment, I can't decide what it should look like. I'm sure it will come to me.

I also cut off those things from the ends of the arms to form "shoulders" upon which I will eventually be mounting the main guns.

Needs more Rivets! ;)

A good start there, make sure it's good and blocky and complicated looking. At the moment it's looking abit round to be orky.

That's the idea! Give us a chance mate, I've only just started it!!!!!

Pity, I liked those things on the sides. Looked like great big orky engines. :)

Don't worry, they'll be put to use yet.

Thanks to Mrs Digits, was able to put a bit more gs on so the lower jaw is done. I;ll do the temples later.

thewizardofoz - September 29, 2007 01:46 AM (GMT)
that is great! but why a count-as? isn't there VDR in Apoc.?

jasevx - September 29, 2007 07:11 AM (GMT)
Dave told you it was easy just to model it on Geordies! :)

Coming on great guns, did you track down those data sheets they had at GD?

Digits - September 29, 2007 10:23 AM (GMT)
No I can't find them. Official release of Apocalypse is not until the 13th so may come to light then.

As for VDR, hav'nt spotted it yet.

Edit. OK finished GS on the face and I've mounted the seating for what will be the cockpit.

Let me say that ork skull is too darn cool.
Carry On

Digits - September 30, 2007 10:14 AM (GMT)
Cheers Lackoff.

Well. a lack of material, rivets and bolts means I'm scuppered for a few weeks. So in the meantime, I've started on the first major weapon - Supa-Gatler (with Psycho-Dakka-Blasta!) which I love the concept of (read it in the Apocalypse book).

Here are the barrels

Looking forward to seeing the finished product, its going to damn impressive.

Ross - October 10, 2007 12:56 PM (GMT)
Bugger me!! How much GS did you use on that head!!

Looking cool. It will certainly be an intimidating prospect on the battle field!!

The Buzz - October 11, 2007 12:41 PM (GMT)
Sweet child of mine !!!

That thing is huge

Nice work though, I can't wait to see it finished.

Just a note: If you are sculpting large items (like the skull) you may be better of with Miliput, its much cheaper.

Cheers,

Doghouse - October 15, 2007 07:46 AM (GMT)
Looking great so far mate! I love the GS work.
So what is it going to be eventually then, a sort of airship?

Digits - October 15, 2007 12:04 PM (GMT)
Cheers mate - yup, it's going to be a flying (slowly) stompa!

Just waiting for some model supplies and I'll be posting an update.

jasevx - October 15, 2007 02:08 PM (GMT)
Still think you cheated modelling it on the mirror! :P

Digits - October 15, 2007 03:48 PM (GMT)
Aye, I ain't no pretty sight in the morning!

Cheeky sod!

hiveminion - October 15, 2007 06:55 PM (GMT)
Didn't know you were working on this Dave! It looks so damn cool, I saw that mine-drop-thingey on GD and I loved it, great to see you doing something similar. The sculpting on the skull is amazing, it looks really Orky.

Fantastic job so far, can't wait to see this one finished. B)

Digits - October 17, 2007 09:38 AM (GMT)
OK, a little update. Still waiting on some materials, but I've fixed the head to the body and given the skull a quick dust of rough spray (the green was offending my eyes!)

user posted image

I've also attached a platform base to it's back. In true ork architectural style, there are no plans for this, I'm just making it up as I go along!!! I've blu-tacked a bit of plant to it, to explain my thinking.

I intend to build over it, but have one side open (big doors) with a little vignette of some gretchin mechanics trying to do a quick fix. They will be watched over my an ork in dungarees!

user posted image

The whole thing will have durbar plate walkways around it giving me scope to add a little humour. I need to think of ways to finish the joint between the head and the body without sculpting huge amounts of milliput to it!

user posted image

I also need a little help. Anyone got suggestions on the best way to bend plastistruct H-beams around the hull without snapping them?

When Black Roses Bloom - October 17, 2007 09:50 AM (GMT)
Hot air perhaps? There are some soldering irons for SMD transistors that blows hot air, at 300 or 400 or 600 deegres C, that helps soft metals around the SMD transistors to be melted for soledring. Perhaps this will help. Yeah I know it's a bit tricky to find suck equipment, but that's the only thing I know...

Also, there are some hair drying-like thingies (we used those when I was at the university to dry up clay vases and ston tablets from restoration) that throw away 1200 deegres C. Might this help? :P

jasevx - October 17, 2007 09:50 AM (GMT)
thats looking brill dave, amazing how the gs disappears!

Digits - October 17, 2007 05:10 PM (GMT)
Thanks for that Roses, but do you know if hot water works on them too?

When Black Roses Bloom - October 17, 2007 05:34 PM (GMT)
Boiled water perhaps. But hot, tap water, I don't think it would do a thing on it <_<

Galikoe3 - October 17, 2007 06:50 PM (GMT)
You could try using a lighter, Ive used the method a couple of times and as long it is the right distance away should work.

That is looking better each time I come here.

Doghouse - October 18, 2007 02:56 PM (GMT)
Great! Now I've seen this monster want to do Ork Air Pirates...grumble...mutter...
Looking fantastic mate, great GS work on the skull and it's really coming along nicely! :)

Don't bother, in real life its easier to cut the beams at angles and weld/bolt like that. I'm sure the Orks would see it that way too

Thoth - October 18, 2007 04:29 PM (GMT)
That way it looks a little more orky then too... :D

A flying Stompa!?? How does it go all stompy then?

Digits - October 18, 2007 05:17 PM (GMT)
I neva said it woz gud at da flyin'!

Digits - November 2, 2007 05:14 PM (GMT)
I just received a box full of useful plastruct and I finally have a few packets of rivets / bolts etc on the way, so it's time for a quick update as I start to add a bit to the Squig!

I put on a couple of plates on which to build up the back shape. In true orky fashion, it's going to look fat and ungainly!

user posted image

I also put down the flooring and stuck in the first bit of technology. This room is going to be open sided and I'm going to stick in a shed load of wiring and pipework along with a few grot mechanics.

user posted image

Forgive my rather bad sketch up, but hopefully you get a bit of a picture forming of the aim of this including surrounding gantries, firing positions for zzap guns and the build up of the combined canon / supa gattler. The other arm is going to sport some form of mega chainsword or wrecker, but I'm a little unsure of this yet.

jasevx - November 2, 2007 05:27 PM (GMT)
coming on great, gona be heavy with the wood tho won't it?

Digits - November 2, 2007 05:32 PM (GMT)
Errrr, what wood? If you mean that little bit between the bulkheads, it's only a one off! Mostly going to be covered in card / plasticard.

All the walkways will be in plastic. I don't envisage it being much heavier than it is now. One other thing I forgot to sketch on, is that I'm thinking of having a open "bomb bay" type door with rapelling orks hanging from it to represent the troop capacity!

hiveminion - November 2, 2007 05:32 PM (GMT)
That's looking awesome DD!

I think some kind of giant wrecker ball would be fantastic for the other arm. I can just see those Orks using it as some kind of 'recyclable' bomb, dropping it on top of something and then pulling it back up again to have another go! Would also be very fitting as you wanted to use it as a counts-as Stompa.

One thing though, in your artist's impression ( :P ) you drew a face on the front plate above the skull. Personaly I wouldn't do that, I think the skull itself should draw the eye towards it and be the 'head' of the ship, rather than it having two faces. Maybe you could do some kind of balcony there though, giving the whole thing an open bridge? With a suitably evil looking Kaptin at the helm?

Digits - November 2, 2007 05:39 PM (GMT)
Hive, your idea about the retractable wrecking ball is inspired! ;) That's what I'm going to do. As for the cockpit, I see what youy are getting at but the face may well appear but wont be painted to detract from the skull, which will ultimately be painted skull / blue quartered. I'll have a little think about it though.

Looking good BUT....do you really need another face ontop of this one? I think it'd look better without a face there. Or use the bi assed skull as a cockpit!

Digits - November 3, 2007 03:10 PM (GMT)
you're probably right. I will model the cockpit a little more sedately, but I'll probably model steel faces on the side of the flyer.

The skull isn't the cockpit but is a pair of missile launch tubes.
